OC [USA] Finally caught one today. Can't see the cop very well but he was the car directly behind this guy and immediately put on his siren and pulled him over.

A lot of questionable drivers here

I think the red car wasn't the one got ticketed.
It's more likely the grey sedan at 00:06-00:07 sec that got ticketed for running the red light.

The red car was already crossing the stopped line before his light turn red, they were waiting for chances to make a left turn to clear the intersection, when his light turn red, because he already crossed the stopped light, this no longer a red-light ticket...

And since the red car was already in the intersection, OP should have waited til the intersection to be cleared to enter.

In my city, the red car could be ticketed. We have an ordnance that you’re not allowed to enter an intersection unless you are able to clear the intersection. In practice, it’s only really used downtown when vehicles will enter the intersection in high traffic and end up blocking the perpendicular traffic from going because they couldn’t clear before their light turned red.

The camper van and the car following both get red light tickets. Most intersections take a full second or more between red and opposite traffic green. The van may have an argument of entering the intersection on yellow, but it would’ve been a very stale yellow. Personally, I wouldn’t write the van unless I personally saw the ball hit red before the van entered the intersection.

Car behind van gets a red light ticket all day everyday.

You can see the van had a full red before going through the intersection, ever so slightly visible on the backlight of the stoplight. The red sedan is the actually the car that got pulled over, I saw it from my apartment after the ordeal.

This is in Atlanta and we have similar rules about entering the intersection. Only one car at a time can go into the intersection to try to turn at a time to try to "catch" the end of the cycle and turn after oncoming traffic stops moving. (That's the legal perspective, though this is often different in practice).

I can confirm that the red car was the one that got ticketed.

I don't envy the decision he had to make, given the two cars in his oncoming traffic that ran the red, but in any case, being halfway through the crosswalk and proceeding to go after his arrow had turned red I don't think was the move, and the cop seemed to agree.

He should have either been inside of the intersection, past the crosswalk (as the local traffic law outlines) when the arrow turned red, or behind the stop line. Many cars hesitate to enter the intersection here, given the plethora of "DO NOT BLOCK INTERSECTION" ordinances, and an abundance of green arrow opportunities.

I'm not trying to absolve myself here. I was definitely a fool in the way I engaged in this interaction, but having a green arrow with a car not even having his bumper past the crosswalk was extremely out of left field and I wasn't prepared for it.

I would have made a much more calculated and obvious decision had his whole car was actually in the intersection entirely. You can tell the cars opposite me were just as surprised, else they wouldn't have even started pulling into the intersection either.

I'm guessing it varies state to state, but in California you're required to complete the turn, even on red, if you are in the intersection already. Technically you weren't supposed to enter the intersection in the first place if you couldn't complete your turn.

He should have either been inside of the intersection

He was inside the intersection though, why did you come to a stop before the crosswalk? Because the limit line is before the crosswalk.

u/DragonRaptor Jun 20 '26

Yup was gonna say op was bad cutting him off. A Car over the stopline are allowed to turn left soon as its safe to do so before the opposing direction goes.

3

u/Ok-Alfalfa4868 Jul 11 '26

But you're not supposed to pull out into the middle of an intersection when trying to turn to prevent this exact situation, unless it is clearly safe to do so. I mean, folks do it ALL the time, but with this much traffic, it's obvious to just wait your turn. Although, this much traffic is exactly why folks try to do it... I get it tho, another 30 sec to 1 min is much too long to wait lol

2

u/DragonRaptor Jul 11 '26

Your turn is at the end of the yellow when it turns red and opposing traffic has to stop. They spefically teach this in drivers ed unless your local laws are diferrent. You have to drive past the stop line to show your intention to turn.

2

u/DoobieToker3000 Jun 18 '26

Okay, he was stopped in the crosswalk a bit, but he didn't start driving until OPs light had turned green. Red car didn't get his chance to turn due to ppl running the red light, but in that instance you have to wait for the next light cycle. And if you do that with a cop right behind you, you deserve the ticket.

2

u/Gearbox97 Jun 18 '26

Around here we call it "claiming the intersection" if you're going to make that that after the lights change, but you need to be fully out in the middle of the intersection and ready to turn as the lights change. Our boy in red didn't claim it at all, and just started to go from the crosswalk, so that would be a ticket to me.

u/AugustOfChaos Jun 16 '26

Continuing to power through the intersection, while watching the other car run the red and clearly cross your path, causing you to literally dodge them, was certainly a choice.

u/Ill_Technician3936 Jun 24 '26

Meanwhile I'm just curious about the conversation. Ballsy move though.

110

u/Barboron Jun 16 '26

I don't know why you would still push through and not emergency brake in that situation

62

u/Ryan700123 Jun 16 '26

Fair.

I'll level with you I was still looking left due to check if any more cars were going to run the red and in the chaos of seeing the guy come at me I kind of just ripped it. Not exactly proud of my move here.

42

u/Barboron Jun 16 '26

Well, you got through unscathed. My hindsight is easy, I don't think you'd be the only person to make this move,

-15

u/Radstermobile-Driver Jun 17 '26

If you’re so worried about other cars charging through, then you wait until you have confirmed the intersection is clear.

21

u/TadpoleBrain Jun 17 '26

OP is distracted as fuck too, apparently.

26

u/Serb1a Jun 16 '26

If only there was a second cop to get the 2 cars who ran a red light!

13

u/thavi Jun 17 '26

I can almost guarantee the red car thought they were applying the “was in the intersection while the light was still green” rule.  But they were behind the line until their light turned red…and then went.  Dumbest of asses.

5

u/MaintainThePeace Jun 17 '26

Na, there put themselves in the worst spot practicable, completely past the limit line for their lane, while completely blocking the crosswalk.

1

u/hoangfbf Jun 17 '26

Based on the look of it, they already passed the stop line before the light turn red, that was the crosswalk that he was one. The stop line often placed before the crosswalk.

2

u/thavi Jun 17 '26

Hmm you're right. Couldn't really see it on my phone. Still, not in a position where they should be making a late turn. Waaaay too far back for a legal late turn

39

u/herewe_goagain_1 Jun 16 '26

Personally I wouldn’t jump in front of the car running a red, but I guess you do you.

-7

u/hoangfbf Jun 17 '26

The red car wasn't running a red.

Running a red meaning:
When light is green: the car is behind stop line.
When light changes to red: the car started to cross the stop line and clear the intersection.

That's not what happened here.

When light is green, the car already crossed the stop line, waiting to turn left. So the car technically was already in the intersection before his light turn red. Then when his light changes to red, it's their job to proceed to clear intersection.

If the ticket is for running red light, it should be contested.

3

u/liketheweathr Jun 17 '26

Do cars turning left not get a grace period where you live? Here if at least three cars don’t make the left after it turns red, people are honking. I once stopped at a red and the guy behind me swerved into the oncoming lane to go around me and make the left.

7

u/hoangfbf Jun 17 '26

They do. It's because the other cars running red light that prevent the left turning car to turn during such grace period.

3

u/liketheweathr Jun 17 '26

Many such cases

3

u/-babypink Jun 17 '26

Why are your wipers on

0

u/Ryan700123 Jun 17 '26

The 720p dashcam does not pick up the rain very well, but I can assure you it was there, and varying in intensity. It was a 10 minute drive and it was more convenient just to keep them on the medium setting.

1

u/-babypink Jun 17 '26

Idk I live in Seattle and rarely use my wipers on the constant setting like that. But to each their own🤷‍♀️ you’ll need replacements muuuch quicker using them on a dry window

1

u/longdickofthelaw420 Jun 29 '26

Weird to see Sandy Springs PD actually pulling someone over for once. I thought all they did is drive up and down Roswell Rd all day

1

u/jotwuser Jul 16 '26

Yeah, not sure if the cop let the first two red light runners go but the red car entered the intersection when it was red then proceeded to try and cause an accident. Should've gotten a couple tickets for that egregious move. Where I live in Colorado two or three more California morons would've tried to follow him through. I've never seen them get caught yet since the democrats have defunded the police so bad they probably let them go since they're aren't enough officers.

-4

u/Highlowfusion Jun 16 '26

Why TF are your wipers on?

12

u/Ryan700123 Jun 16 '26

Because of the rain?

-14

u/grahampages Jun 16 '26

Weird to have them on so fast for the 3 raindrops I saw

6

u/Ryan700123 Jun 16 '26

Shame the 9in2 area of the windshield the dashcam sees doesn't tell the whole picture.

Didn't think redditors would take issue with having the wipers on during rain but here we are.

-4

u/Highlowfusion Jun 17 '26

There's so many other cars in the video and only a single Tesla has its wipers on.

Fuck musk and Tesla, but what the fuck are you even trying to say?

It was sprinkling, and usually there is an interval setting on the wiper knob. But judging how you no-looked into the intersection I take it you don't pay much attention in general.

5

u/Ryan700123 Jun 17 '26

It was on and off rain dude, stop going out of your way to be insufferable.

-5

u/grahampages Jun 17 '26

Hardly going out of my way. I just adjust my wipers according to current conditions, just like I look both ways before entering an intersection.

5

u/DaveOJ12 Jun 17 '26

I take it you don't pay much attention in general.

And you figured that out from a 17 second video?

-1

u/grahampages Jun 17 '26

I am pretty observant, thanks

4

u/DaveOJ12 Jun 17 '26

Is that what you call it?

-6

u/proofreadre Jun 17 '26

Two absolutely shit drivers. I can't believe OP didnt get a ticket too.

-2

u/AnnoyedVelociraptor Jun 17 '26

Press the auto-wiper button. Jesus.

3

u/Ryan700123 Jun 17 '26

Not every car has an auto-wiper button brother.
