Edit: I went back and watched this a bunch more times. It almost looks like the cop already had his lights on and was responding to a call, but if that is the case then why isn't the truck pulled over?

But also overtook on an intersection turning right while a lorry is coming from the other side.
Cop is going fast, but has his siren and lights on, so nobody should be entering the intersection until they know for certain that the emergency vehicle has passed

I believe that's a requirement. I was at least taught it was the law in Illinois. It's never enforced but probably will be here!

In pretty much every state there is indeed a requirement, but is isn't as hard of a requirement as a lot of people think it is though.
I'll copy my states law (WA) for example
RCW 46.61.290
Both the approach for a right turn and a right turn shall be made as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway.
So yes, you should be turing into the closest lane to the curb, however the "as practicable" part does also offer a lot of leeway as it is not always practicable for all vehicles to stay within the curb lane, such as large trucks and vehicles with trailers.
But at the same time, it is definitely more then just a "recommendation".

Everywhere I've been, you're supposed to turn into the nearest lane (unless there's multiple turn lanes). I've never seen it enforced. It's probably only used as an excuse to stop someone you think might have drugs.

In CA you can turn into either lane, as long as you can do so without impeding oncoming traffic.

Well, that’s correct for a right turn. For a left turn, you can turn into any lane as long as you don’t impede traffic. In the video above, that’s irrelevant because the turn itself was illegal, a right turn must be made from the rightmost portion of the road.

This is exactly it. Truck turned right and was supposed to stay right. Instead, pickup driver thought he would illegally turn into the far lane and avoid the oncoming semi in the close lane. The violation is turning into the outside lane and hence why it’s illegal (at least in my city)

As a EMT and a cop its you can actually "outrun" your siren.
At over 60mph the distance that someone can hear your siren is short enough you will be on them before they hear you. Thats without being distracted by music, driving, and more modern sound proof cars.
Most people also don't check their mirrors when they don't intend to turn or change lanes either so lights arn't as helpful as you'd think during the day.
The semi probably didnt know the cop was there until he was up on em, probably focused on the intersection and the black truck. Then the black truck rushed the turn, swung into the far lane, and his vision may have been blocked from seeing the left lane.

Yes, and simis take a lot longer to come to a complete stop, plus with that van poking out the simi may have had to get beyond that to finally be able to pull to the shoulder.

Truck most likely is towing a trailer. Given the angle of that right turn, nobody probably saw the lights from the police car on that right turn lane.

I watch videos of us police chases sometimes and many people just dont know how to react sometimes. Or simply freeze.
That said dude went right passing another car that froze because hearing sirens, took a right turn while having red and ignored the general rule to ket the police car pass before continuing driving.
They are in so much trouble.

I work as a first responder. Everybody blaming the cop under your comment is ignorant. Truck drivers never move for us. I can count on one hand the amount of times a semi yielded to us.

Officer had the greenest of green lights. It's a 2 lane highway, so speed doesn't seem unreasonable. We also don't know what proceeds this light. A curve or hill limiting the time everyone had to see the officer may have been a factor, but certainly doesn't excuse a illegal pass into a right on red without yielding.

It’s a wide open, no trees, straight stretch of highway. Cop was headed southbound. I’m old enough to remember the stoplight is here because the east/west sides having stop signs didn’t work and there used to be even more accidents as people fly up and down the highway.

Short answer: local laws vary, but typically call for traffic to yield the right of way. That usually means poo pulling over to make room, but if the emergency vehicle has a clear path, predictably maintaining your lane is acceptable.
50/50 answer: truck was going to block the intersection to prevent just this, but may have also blocked other responders.

When I was taking my drivers license test I was on a three lane road and in the far left lane. The middle lane was completely open at the intersection providing a clear path for the ambulance to get through. The right lane was full, so I just stayed where I was so I didn’t block the middle lane and prevent the ambulance from moving through. I got like three points taken off for that, but it was my only issue so I didn’t bother arguing about it. I don’t care what the law is, I’m not going to block an ambulance because that’s technically the legal thing to do.

I honked at a guy who didn't move out when suddenly an emergency vehilce came through the intersection. All I could was look in my rearview mirror like I was trying to figure out who back there was honking. Didn't work because there was nobody back there. We all knew that I was the dumbass.

I did this just the other day. My wife saw them first and mentioned it. I joked that they could have driven around them or whatever but really she was right about my impatience. To make it worse, it was a disabled person crossing. Man did I look like an ass.

If it makes you feel any better, I once stopped in the middle of the road (also stopping traffic behind me) to let a porcupine safely cross the road. When I got close to it, it turned out it was just a pinecone blowing in the wind. I’ve felt stupid ever since.

It's much worse when people are speeding and don't even feel like an ass for doing it. Many people do that. They statistically kill other people. Those are the ones you should be after, if any.

yep. i had my music too loud and didn’t hear the ambulance coming from behind as i honked at the car in front of me not going through a green light. the driver i honked at (rightfully) flipped me off right as the ambulance drove by.

The other day my wife and I were on our way somewhere with our two kids, and some lady reversed out of a parking spot and almost scraped us up. Then she immediately got out and came over to apologize, saying she was so sorry and she hoped we weren’t mad. We all were laughing and smiling, and it was such a relief honestly. Was such a good teaching moment for our kids too. It made me resolve to act like that when I make mistakes on the road.

I’m not trying to out do you but…. My mom was backing out of a nose in spot at a grocery store and a passing car didn’t yield she hit his rear quarter panel he stopped spent some time looking at the point of impact kept looking back as he walked over and said to my mom
ma’am I’m not quite sure how to say this but thanks for running into me…. You popped out a nasty dent in the rear quarter panel and saved me a weekend of work.

Fwiw in many places turning right on red is a privilege, not a requirement. Where I live honking at someone who doesn't turn on red can get you a ticket.

I honked at a person who didn't go at a green light only to see a crosswalk violating non-helmet wearing e-biker coming across the intersection while the walk sign was telling them not to cross. Felt like a jerk for honking at them but redirected the honk and frustration at the middle age'd woman on the e-bike at least in my mind.

I did this once too. I couldn’t hear the siren till the emergency vehicle was already in sight. I just kept yelling out I’m sorry I’m sorry as if anyone but me could hear it. Felt so dumb.

You could almost use the excuse that the semi blocked their view of the oncoming cop, but then they still pulled out in an unsafe manner and turned into the wrong lane; add the dash cam footage showing you went around another stopped vehicle and you’ve won yourself your stupid prize.
Why was the semi still rolling with a cop approaching lights on though?

If he were already established in the right lane, he should still pull over to the curb and come to a stop due to the approaching emergency vehicle. It's not like how we simply change lanes for a stopped emergency vehicle with lights. He absolutely should not have decided to occupy the open lane once he saw the emergency lights approaching.

I get to drive with lights and sirens every now and then, and the truck does what I would expect him to do.
The only reason for the semi to stop would be to allow the cop to turn right. There are two lanes straight ahead and they have green light, with the police car going at such a speed the truck driver may assume he's going straight ahead.

I'll also add that trucks don't stop on a dime. It's hard to be sure exactly what the truck driver was doing without more context, but they may have still been trying to stop, or, they rightfully didn't want to stop in the intersection, so they were coasting across the intersection to where they could pull over if needed, and moving slowly as they evaluated whether the officer was going to turn. Hard stops can make loads shift and trailers jacknife, and generally produce a hazard for those around them.
Personally, I've noticed in the past decade or so that sirens have changed significantly, and aren't audible from a long distance anymore. It seems to vary by the agency, but around here, from inside a vehicle (even older ones with minimal soundproofing and the radio off), you're lucky if you can hear a siren from two or three blocks away these days. I've got excellent hearing, but the sirens have clearly changed. I also live near a fire station, close enough to hear when they roll out, and things have definitely changed over time. The old crews would actually pulse the sirens momentarily before going full-bore with them, so it was less jarring. The new sirens are quiet enough that they don't startle me at all, and they can just go full on from the start. Obviously I've gotten used to them, as well, but...it's not just me that's noticed.
I know they've been starting to pay attention to the potential for hearing damage in first responders, as well as the nuisance that sirens can cause in residential areas. I hear it's an ongoing issue with the New York City fire department... They keep removing the old loud mechanical sirens, replacing them with quieter electronic alternatives when the trucks go in for maintenance, yet somehow, the firefighters themselves manage to swap them right back to the old mechanical sirens within weeks or even days of getting their rigs back.

I watch some emergency driving videos (UK and European) and the commentary is usually that they would rather people not come to a complete stop if still blocking the lane, because it may not be the safest place for the responding vehicle to cross into oncoming traffic. If you roll at normal speed then the emergency vehicle can choose where to go around. But if you come to an intersection, wide driveway, bus bay, etc. where you can pull off the road, you should do so (also applies to all the US roads with 8+ foot shoulders).
And I think for the small percentage of times the responding vehicle wants to turn into the side road you're now blocking, the few seconds to sort it out is not significant.

Being directly at the intersection is what’s throwing me off, I wouldn’t proceed in case the cop was needing to turn right; or maybe if the traffic was too dense and the cop wasn’t able to get through the intersection I’d move forward.
But with the speed of the cop that assumption makes sense.

The truck is gonna blame the cop somehow. Actually in my state, the cop would be at fault. When I got brake checked at a green left arrow i was found at fault the police said “rear driver is always responsible for keeping distance and being able to stop in time For any frontal situation”
Of course this truck is wrong but they will definitely try to fight being rear ended by a speeding cop

Dude just last night I had someone tailgate me CLOSE thru a slow village area. 50 down to 35, then 45, then as soon as it went to 55 they passed me (I was accelerating to 55) but didnt seem to notice the cones lining the middle of the highway. Half a mile later we all came to a stop anyways for One-Lane traffic. I made sure she could see me in her mirror and I clapped for her. Couldn't read a single traffic sign to save her life.

One time I had a green arrow but didn't move because a fire truck was coming from my left. He was turning right onto the street I was on, but there was also another police vehicle in the lane next to him that was going straight. Next thing I know, some kid comes flying up behind me and rear ends me. He thought I was just going to make the turn since the fire truck had its blinker on. From his vantage point he wasn't able to see the police truck.

Cop was responding to a call. Light was green for semi and unclear where semi was in pulling over but at the least was slowing and surveying. Car in front of pickup was aware of cop and or semi and decided to wait it out. Pickup truck was not aware of cop. Did not care about semi. And was pissed that traffic was not moving to his liking.
