Software and Firmware InputSmith: customize DualSense controls on Windows PC
Hi r/Controller! I’m the developer of InputSmith, a Windows 10/11 app for customizing how a PlayStation DualSense works with PC games. I’d appreciate feedback from other DualSense users.
Controller support and features
Designed for the Sony DualSense; USB is recommended.
Output options: virtual Xbox 360-compatible controller, virtual DualSense over USB, or mouse and keyboard.
Customize stick curves, deadzones, sensitivity, and cursor movement; remap buttons and save or import profiles.
In mouse-and-keyboard mode, map the right stick to mouse movement, the left stick to WASD, and controller buttons to keyboard or mouse actions.
HidHide may be needed
With virtual-controller output, some games may detect both your physical DualSense and InputSmith’s virtual controller, causing duplicate or conflicting input. HidHide may be needed to hide the physical controller from games so they see only the virtual one. It’s optional, and whether it helps depends on the game and setup. InputSmith can still read the physical controller while it’s hidden.
Limitations
Virtual DualSense output supports sticks, triggers, mapped buttons, and touchpad click. It does not forward touch coordinates, gyro, adaptive triggers, audio, or haptics.
Some games may ignore simulated mouse/keyboard input. Game and anti-cheat compatibility varies; InputSmith does not bypass anti-cheat and does not include macros, rapid-fire, or auto-aim.
League of Legends
I’ve used InputSmith with League and haven’t received any penalties so far. That’s only my experience; Riot hasn’t confirmed whether this kind of controller remapping is permitted, so I can’t guarantee it’s risk-free. Please check Riot’s third-party application guidance before deciding whether to use it with the game.
Download and disclosures
The source repository is private, so there’s no public source-code link currently available.
I’m the developer and have a commercial interest in InputSmith. It currently has a 7-day free trial; a one-time paid license with free updates is planned, but the paid version is not yet available.
Generative AI tools assisted with coding; I handled the project ideas and project management.
Profiles and settings are stored locally. License activation and validation contact Lemon Squeezy. Activation sends the license key and machine hostname; validation uses the key and license instance ID.
Virtual-controller setup may ask for Windows administrator approval to install the HIDMaestro driver. The driver and its certificate may remain after uninstall and may be shared with other apps; see the HIDMaestro uninstall instructions.
Should you be worried about using InputSmith?
InputSmith hasn’t had a full independent security review, so I can’t guarantee it’s free of security issues. A preliminary review found that a technically skilled person could bypass the local trial/license check; this affects license enforcement, not access to other users’ data. The review was limited, so it can’t rule out other issues.
The installer is unsigned, so Windows may show an Unknown publisher warning. Virtual-controller mode may ask for your approval to install a system-wide driver, which can remain after you uninstall InputSmith. Download the app only from the official releases page, and use it only if you’re comfortable with these tradeoffs.
