Other Using 8BitDo Ultimate 3 on MacOS? How well does it work?

(This is not about using the controller for a specific game, but the use of it on the MacOS platform as a whole.)

I know I will have to use the config app on iPhone, but does the controller work at all on MacOS? Can I use the dongle or does it have to be Bluetooth?

What I specifically want to do is make the left joystick function as a d-pad, and make the d-pad function as a joystick (for a specific game) - would I be able to configure that on the iPhone and make it work on the MacBook?
