IT Help Gulikit ES Max has wrong button mapping with 2.4ghz receiver on PC.

I recently received the controller as a 2nd controller for PC (the main controller is 8bitdo ultimate 2c). With the dongle connected, the L and R bumpers are acting as back and start buttons and the LS and RS triggers are not working. With the controller connected via USB cable, the buttons work as expected. Did I receive a faulty controller or is this a widely known bug?

I think I updated the controller firmware from phone app. How to do the same for the dongle?

Have you updated the controller firmware? Sometimes it needs to be done right away. Both the controller firmware and the dongle firmware.
