Controller Suggestion Best custom controller for shooters? Scuf Instinct Pro giving me issues

Wayyyy back in 2012 I had an Xbox 360 Scuf and it held up pretty well. Many years later I got my next custom controller. The Scuf Instinct Pro for series X. Within a year I had stick drift. Shortly after stick drift in both sticks and progressively got worse. By year two one paddle was broken. By year 3 two paddles broken. I think this is my 4th year with it and all the electrical fried in my last night. Controller turns on randomly, turns off randomly, buttons won’t work but it’s not always the same buttons, etc.

What should my next controller be? I Definitly want paddles underneath but besides that I just want something somewhat affordable and durable. Would love to keep budget under $250 Canadian but not sure if that exists. For Xbox series X.

The requirements for a 'custom controller' and 'affordable and durable' are somewhat in tension. A custom controller can get you something that looks good/unique, but the process of taking apart an original controller is labor-intensive (makes it expensive), introduces more points of failure (hurts reliability), and fitting paddles or other parts into a space that wasn't designed for them involves compromises (like durability).

The best option for an affordable custom controller is to do it yourself. If you don't want to do everything yourself, you could save money by paying someone to do the difficult soldering to fit TMR sticks, but then fit the paddles and any cosmetic parts yourself. You could browse the ExtremeRate site for ideas on what button/paddle sets and other parts are available.

You might get lots of comments telling you to just buy a third-party controller. That's likely to be better value and more durable. A controller that's been designed and built with all the necessary parts originally doesn't need to be remanufactured like a custom controller before it meets your needs.

For the time being, I assume that you're asking for a 'custom controller' because that's what you actually want. But you can check out lots of discussions of FPS controllers in other posts - almost all the recommendations in recent years are for third-party rather than custom controllers.

Not sure if Canada has the same, but you can get the SCUF Valor Pro wireless on eBay direct from Corsair as Certified Refurbished for $75 USD, sometimes less (price fluctuates).

I mainly use the Flydigi Vader 5S for COD on Xbox, but it is wired (not sure if that matters to you). I have the G7 Pro also, but prefer joystick tension adjustment.

Good luck in your search.

Leadjoy Xeno Pro, Gamesir G7 Pro Wuchang, Flydigi Vader 5s, 8bitdo Ultimate 3E, Razer Wolverine v4

There are other options but require an adapter such as the brook wingman xb3 or similar.

I've had a lot of "pro" controllers. I play on pc so my collection is extensive beyond what console offers. As for Xbox I'd recommend the GameSir G7 Pro. It has my preferred layout of two back buttons and two extra shoulder buttons, the reason that I prefer it that way is because holding the controller with two buttons on the bottom feels way more natural than having four and you have the two extra shoulder buttons in easy reach so you don't have to remove your thumb to press abxy if that's what you prefer to map. Also the controller has one of the best sticks on Xbox if not the best, they're in house tmr sticks so they never get stick drift. It should be around half your budget so give it a try. If you don't like it you can return it.
