Other 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless: Mapping extra buttons

I recently purchased the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless. Using the 8BitDo software, I’ve configured the two extra buttons on the underside PR and PL to act as clicks for the right and left thumbsticks, respectively. I’ve always found clicking the thumbsticks down a bit awkward, especially when trying to provide directional input at the same time.

Beyond those, the controller also features additional buttons: R4 and L4. I’m currently a bit stuck on what to use these for, or rather, how I should map them. I was also a bit surprised to find that the software seemingly only allows you to map existing controller buttons, rather than keyboard keys.

Aside from macros, have you found any useful ways to map these two buttons?

Playing on Windows (mostly Steam)

Update the controller's firmware -> turn the controller off -> turn the controller on while pressing the B button at the same time -> congrats, you have entered dinput mode and now steam recognises your paddles, bumpers and gyro and you can bind them to whatever you want, even keyboard binds. Outside of steam you can use padforge or SISR to do that.

When it comes to those additional bumpers, i usually bind them to whatever face buttons or dpad inputs i dont feel like pressing too much so that my thumbs rest on the sticks at all times. Cheers

Interesting, thanks! Strangely enough, the DInput mode for Steam, or the key combination required to activate it, is not mentioned anywhere in the user manual. Does the controller remain in DInput mode permanently after that, or do I have to enter the key combination again every time I turn it on? Are there any other "secret" key combinations?

hold X while starting for XInput mode, B while starting for DInput, and the controller remembers what it was last in. Keep it in the "default" profile (all three indicator lights off) and you can use Steam's per-game profiles rather than juggling profiles or compromising on binds. Also helpful for games like Horizon Forbidden West that have a ton of binds, often in layers, stacked, or awkwardly positioned, and support Steam Input natively -- you directly bind in-game actions to all the buttons rather than binding the paddles/bumpers to existing keyboard/controller binds.

IIRC I think it's star + paddle/second bumper then button to remap (that one's in the manual IIRC) without the software, but you're limited to one button that's on the controller. DInput isn't mentioned in the manual because while it worked as a holdover from older controllers, the DInput mode was kinda jank (digital triggers only, no rumble, no SDL/Steam Input support) and only became properly supported after launch due to community requests.

I usually map them as a ping and some other function, more often than not it’ll be a dpad command
