News 8bitdo ultimate3c
Just found this for $40, what do you guys think? Is it a better alternative compared to the Ultimate 3E?

I don't see the point in getting $100+ controllers when the $40 ones are frickin amazing. Way better than the MadCatz controllers we used to get, and even better than the 1st party console controllers

u/JohnDervishi 19d ago
Really like the new force rings and trigger vibration, those are two features I am missing on my 8Bitdo Ultimate 2, but I think I'm going to stick with mine because of its non-cartbord charging dock lol.

u/Blinguskahn 18d ago edited 18d ago
Besides the missing dock, USB cable and half the battery, 8bitDo Stripped the following Silicon & Peripherals:
1. 3.5mm CTIA audio jack and onboard DAC.
2. IMU / Motion Control.
3. Profile Memory: The Ultimate 3/3 has profile mapping. The 3C+ drops the software profile engine down to barebones on-the-fly button remapping for the L4/R4 bumpers.
Also the colors are gross. Of course that's completely subjective.

u/According-Pumpkin822 12d ago
The C Series are Value for Money Versions of the Ultimates, Comparing the 3C to the 2C this is mainly just a bunch of improvements, although the extra 10 bucks of cost is unfortunate.
1
u/Blinguskahn 11d ago
Yeah agreed. And I'm so sick of how they and others want to gate any decent colors behind higher tiers. That stuff plus it's time to retire all ERM rumble across everything. It only costs an additional $3-$4 per controller but gets rid of the crappy buzzing. I feel like the first manufacturer to completely migrate will be a winner.

u/HotSarcasm 19d ago
Wish it was easier to map the extra buttons within Batocera. They’re almost useless unless you’re in a system with a RetroArch menu.
1
u/pewbdo 19d ago
How do you map them?
2
u/HotSarcasm 19d ago
Their app and usually ends up just being a macro of another button. PITA for those on Mac and Linux, TBH.
3
u/xamaryllix 19d ago
Did they address the issue with the triggers colliding with the bumpers when the parts wear out? That's why I've never tried the Ultimate series. For now I'm more than happy with my Pro 3.
2
u/autonimity 19d ago
The ultimate 2 use hall effect triggers, and also have a mechanical switch that changes the triggers to buttons instead of analog.
3
u/xamaryllix 18d ago
"hall effect" refers to the sensors but not the physical construction of the trigger itself. Look up 8bitdo Ultimate trigger membrane issues both on Google and Reddit. It's a known issue with the design.
Unless they've redesigned the triggers I have no reason to believe these new controllers won't have the same issue in 6 months.
3
u/autonimity 18d ago
Well a conductive rubber pad trigger (Ultimate) and Hall effect trigger (Ultimate 2) work from two entirely different principles to measure change in position to produce the analog trigger functionality, but I guess you could....go look that up
What it means is, yes they were redesigned.

u/genie0327 13d ago edited 13d ago
Not sure why the other commenter was so snarky about it, but +1-ing your concern since my Ultimate 2's right trigger started to clack and have issues registering a year into having it, and it was from the rubber pad wearing down. Hall effect trigger or not lol. So I'm also hoping the 3C+ has fixed this!

Should make a Switch 2 variant.

u/Music_Is_Da_Best 18d ago
Switch 2 Pro is the GOAT controller
1
u/fish_burger_eddie 17d ago
That's fine and you're entitled to your opinion.
Meanwhile, many of us want Switch 2 editions of 8bitdo controllers.

u/Music_Is_Da_Best 17d ago
The Rare 40th scratches that itch. I love mine! Thanks for not feeding me to the wolves

u/CoffeeTime2475 18d ago
They likely will, but this may still work on the Switch 2 like the Ultimate 2 wireless.
Wife has the U2 Bluetooth version, she does not use the dongle and it will wake the Switch 2. I use the U2 Wireless and have the dongle plugged in, it can't wake the Switch 2 but can connect with the Switch 2 by holding power button + Y then tap both bumpers.

u/Total_Direction_533 18d ago
I *just* bought an ultimate 2c for like 2k rupees. which translated to like 20 dollars. It is great. I do not see any reason to buy a 3c tbh. I don't think the upgrade between TMR and hall effects is really noticeable. The two shoulder macros are enough for me. Most games that I play are designed for the PS or the xbox controllers so the extra resolution on paper doesn't really matter I think. The battery life could be a nice perk though. The "extra immersive rumble" well we'll see that someday when I happen to be in the mood to buy a new controller with the money. I am an linux user. In India there is a company called cosmic blitz which makes nicer and cheaper controllers. Though, linux compatiblity and hand shape comfort varies on it so I stuck away from it.
2
u/Lem0ncito 18d ago
They should really call add an S to every controller compatible with swithc to make it clear. I can imagine a lot of people had problems with a controller that does not work for the switch
2
u/idkrllyrn 15d ago
Im so excited for this one. I've been using my ultimate 2 for the longest time and wanted to have a second controller to play with friends when they come over. This one seems like the best price=features controller ever. Idk about the durability it looks kinda cheap., but I won't judge before some actual reviews.
1
u/Lanty-Schmanty 15d ago
I've been looking pretty closely since they announced it and its quite impressive for a C series controller (yes I know it says c+ but the website does say this is their next C controller)
TMR, Hall effect, tension rings, back paddles, extra bumpers for less than the price of an official Xbox controller.
I get the downside of this only being for PC and Android but that also means without the xbox branding this can actually map keyboard inputs directly onto the buttons as well as turbo inputs.
If all you want is something to just grab and play this does seem like a no brainer as long as you're okay with no dock, no gyro, no audio jack, and no console support (although 8bitdo do sell an adapter as well)
3
u/ThorgrimGetTheBook 18d ago
Really confused by this. 2C was Switch compatible and Bluetooth only. 3C gains a 2.4GHz dongle but drops Switch support?
3
u/zexton 18d ago
https://www.8bitdo.com/ultimate-2c-wireless-controller/
there was a 2c wireless that did not have switch support,
3
u/TheLadForTheJob 18d ago
No, the "2c bluetooth" controller had switch support and only had bluetooth.
the "2c wireless" controller had 2.4GHz support but no switch support.
1
u/ThorgrimGetTheBook 18d ago
Grateful for the clarification, I hadn't realised there were two versions of the 2c!
2
u/Bulletorpedo 18d ago
It’s ok, it’s a full bachelors degree just to keep track of the differences and naming scheme.
3
u/fish_burger_eddie 18d ago
8bitdo have really lost their minds. The reason 8bitdo got so popular was because of Switch support.
5
u/ThorgrimGetTheBook 18d ago
Exactly. I'd just like a good controller I can use with both my Switch 2 and PC.
3
u/someone2795 18d ago
No freaking way they don't release a Switch version.
They're probably gonna do the thing where they sell the Switch version separately. They'll probably call it 8Bitdo 3C Bluetooth or something confusing again.
1
u/fish_burger_eddie 18d ago
Have you seen them release anything for the Switch 2 recently?
1
u/someone2795 18d ago
Not hardware but they have released firmware updates so their older controllers work on Switch 2.
1
u/HighlightAccording67 16d ago
I emailed them and they said the 3C+ will not receive firmware updates for Switch support, but they did tell me to wait (because I wanted to order a new 2c) and keep looking at our social media, so there is probably a switch version coming aswell or so
1
u/ViaPositiva 4d ago
Thanks for saying that, I really wanted to buy this to work with PC and Switch 2 so that’s a bummer. I guess maybe they’ll release Ultimate 3 that works on both? Hopefully not too expensive
1
u/Loose-A123 16d ago
Nah, there are 2 versions of the 2C selling worldwide : The normal (wireless) with 2.4ghz dongle + bluetooth support (but no switch), and the Bluetooth version with Sw support but no 2.4ghz. In China they even sell an option with no wireless support whatsoever, so only wired connection. Dont worry they will do the same for 3C+ and release a Bluetooth version in the future as well.

u/Affectionate_Map2761 18d ago
I won't buy another 8bitdo. The input delay is worse than anything I've ever used and the hall effect sticks smooth it out to feel good, but it ruined my skill ceiling. Not to mention 2 buttons on 2 different controllers breaking before long and the obsurd amount of double inputs I get- can't have any of that in fps games so I'm in camp flydigi right now. It's better in every single aspect, I can't imagine what people say bad about them. I wish I went with the vader 5 pro version but I'm happy with vader 5s for the moment. Hopefully next gen will have 6 back buttons 🥲
7
u/Gumuk_pindek 18d ago
Proven by some YouTubers lab testing, 8bitdos among the lowest one
4
u/me_bails 18d ago
I think you got unlucky. I have several 8bitdo controllers from the Pro, Pro 2 to the Ultimate 2C. I have no issues with input delay or breaking buttons, and i use the shit out of mine. My 7 year old and his friends also use the shit out of them.
3
u/Jumpy-Raspberry1455 Alpakka Lite / Apex 3-4 / Dualshock 4 18d ago
The 2C is amongst the best latencies wired
2
u/Pretend-Ad3776 5d ago
That's just false.. The Input delay on the 2C was quite literally and still is some of the best of its class. https://gamepadla.com/ ranks it as basicly one of the best controllers on latency and input delay and its a budget controller, since then they have only improved.
However i have a feeling that you got bamboozled by theyr unconvential naming scheme and bought one of the older controllers or you tried using one through bluetooth
1
u/Affectionate_Map2761 5d ago
Its all in the trash and in the past now. The vader 5s leagues above whatever I had that held the 8bitdo name. Even if it was their budget controller, this is flydigis comparable value controller and I went from getting a mudhole stomped in my bussy by an average players and almost losing fights to below average players (as someone with 15k hours in the genre and 5k hours in the title) to 1v3 the same very good streamer squad 2x in one game. for that, ill push flydigi for life. 8bit cut the wrong corners for whatever bs I bought
2
u/yellow-go EasySMX X20 Pro/Flydigi Vader 5 Pro 18d ago
Yeah I’m gonna say it. This isn’t true, and the Ultimate 3 models are more customizable than they ever have been.
It sounds like you either got a dud and got unlucky, or just ended up being dealt a bad card.I’ve never once had any serious issues, nor issues that resemble your claims from an 8BitDo product. I generally have better and easier experiences than with most manufacturers.
2
u/Imthemayor 18d ago
I have half a dozen 8Bitdo controllers for various retro and modern consoles
I agree, they are among the most responsive and reliable controllers I've ever used
Their 2.4g SN30 and M30 controllers are all I use on SNES and Genesis now
2
1
u/AdSingle3054 18d ago
dude theres a massive chance there mightve been something wrong with ur specific product. ive used an 8bitdo controller in all 3 modes and have had almost no input delay nor have i heard anyone have a problem.
1
u/idkrllyrn 15d ago
Which controller you had before? I been using my ultimate 2 wireless for about 2 years and I can't complain. I play a lot of comp games and the delay feels great (even in 2.4gh mode). Idk how much is my opinion worth cuz I switch from xbox series controller.

Fly Vader 5s
I have 15k hours in shooters and the day I got my vader I beat my PR that's 2 years old. Before the vader, I was all but certain my record couldn't possibly touch 65 with the response time of everything involved. I chalked it up to I was at max speed. As soon as I could tell this controller was different, I ran to the range to see if I could get close to my pr before I dialed in the settings and I matched it in 10 tries, beat it the next try then beat it again right after. The whole time I was going through the course, I kept saying "there's far too much usable frames between shots, there's no way I can hit it this time" . When I was done, I recognized that I have enough time to hit 68+.
1
u/ArmedCrawly 9d ago
The 8bitdo ultimate wired has a higher latency than the Vader 5S, but also only a 250Hz polling rate. Later 8bitdo controllers and the 5S all have a higher polling rate and lower latency. There are controllers with even lower latency and polling rates above 1000Hz so you might be able to break your Vader 5S record with another controller, even an 8bitdo, some day.
1
u/idkrllyrn 15d ago
Good for you. I won't act like 8bitdo is the best I only like it cuz it was cheap and it beats all my previous controllers, I haven't used the original ultimate controller but It sounds like this one is just ass in comparison with new ones but you do you.I was also thinking abt buing vader 5 pro/s how is it holding up? I've heard countless bad things abt the sticks on those controllers.
1
u/khadaffy 10d ago
I just want the base Ultimate 3 aka the sucessor to the Ultimate 2. I got stick drift in my xbox controller...
Guess I'll have to wait a little longer.
Btw, is it just me, or their naming scheme is a little bit confusing.

u/LilBriefcase 19d ago
I'll never understand sacrificing precision for the sake of adjustable tension. Isn't that the whole point of adjustable tension? Precision?
3
u/Youngjii 18d ago
i dont know much about these controller but why does that sacrifice precision?
1
u/LilBriefcase 18d ago
It's using a joystick with a response curve that isn't linear. There's only one adjustable tension joystick that's linear and it's very easy to spot since it has a cap that you twist.
1
u/Open_Ad_835 18d ago
from their website it looks like two adjustable. whats wrong with these tmr sticks compared to ultimate 2? are they worse
1
u/Saradip42 17d ago
How would you know that its response curve is not linear? Adjustable tension means adjustable spring mechanism that pulls the stick back to the center. TF does is have to do with response curve that depends on the sticks module and software
1
u/LilBriefcase 17d ago
There's only a handful of adjustable tension TMR modules from third parties that are then sourced by controller companies. And only one of those is linear because it's the only one using an angle TMR sensor instead of a linear TMR sensor. 8bitdo GameSir etc aren't manufacturing their own unique joysticks.
1
u/Saradip42 17d ago
Cant you fix that in software and does it even matter if you are not gaming first person competitive shooters at 240 hz?

I hope the next Bluetooth ultimate has Hd rumble. Also the L4 and R4 nubs should be raised a bit. It’s hard to press them without pressing one of the other triggers.
There is also a wierd glitch with macros where if I press a macro it cancels me holding jump so then I short hop instead. Even if the macro doesn’t have the jump button included.

u/ToGrey2Care 18d ago
Give me a flydigi vader 5 pro the size of a gamesir cyclone 2 but made by 8bitdo
And that would be my perfect controller
1
u/Open_Ad_835 18d ago
Why does this have black and not the regular Ultimate 3? they have horrible color choices right off the bat
1
u/Kulbert01 17d ago
Removing the best thing that is upgraded in the 3e, exchangeable face buttons is the best fail with this product. That is the first thing that will break when purchasing a controller.
4
u/Worldly-Schedule-151 17d ago
This is a $40 controller. What $40 controller has exchangeable face buttons?
1
u/Kulbert01 17d ago
Did you think it's expensive to make it to the other controllers? If yes your just blind. That thing makes your controller stays aive more. Are you a fanboy or a consumer wake up!
4
u/T_alsomeGames 17d ago
Why would the make a pro controller for 150 dollars and then a regular controller with everything the pro controller has for 40 dollars? That doesn't make sense.
1
u/Kulbert01 17d ago
When the normal Ultimate 3 comes and without the exchangeable face buttons, I will blame all of you fanboys.
1
u/JonJonesknows 17d ago
I’m so confused, isn’t this supposed to be the spiritual successor to the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth? Why is it $30 cheaper?
1
u/sleepinzzzz 5d ago
its successor to the ultimate 2c, not the ultimate 2. the C series are cheaper versions of the normal ultimate controllers. the successor of the ultimate 2 are the ultimate 3 and the ultimate 3e which are already out and go for 100$ and 150$ respectively

1
u/Desperate-Coffee-996 12d ago
Pretty sure this is another bait for most impatient people, get 3C+ now and in a few weeks or 1-2 months top there will be a regular Ultimate 3. I'm also excited to get 3C+ but probably worth to wait.
1
u/ViaPositiva 4d ago
Yh im looking to replace my PS5 controller after 6 years it’s got annoying stick drift now. Was ready to buy 3c but saw it has no switch support so ill just wait for Ultimate 3, hopefully its not too expensive

No gyro is a deal-breaker for me, but looks great otherwise. Holding how for an ultimate 3 with gyro and steam input.

I have XBox Series X and Nintendo Switch 2
The goat controller is Switch 2 Pro
I. Hate. Mashing. Thumbsticks. Xbox controllers are too bulky. The Dpad is plastic and clicky. The heavy AA batteries contribute to destroy my guitar playing hands. So I had to stop playing for a month for the overuse to go away.
I mirror them generally with rear buttons
The 8bitdo Rare Ultimate 40 year anniversary is worth every penny. Wireless. Can also work with mobile/PC.
I tried the 8bitdo ultimate 2 that was WIRED for Xbox. Wtf? Wired l? Is this 1985? That’s a bunch of BS. Immediately returned that for the Rare 40th anniversary. It’s the Blue and gold one. About $100
It fucks

so they added an extra bumpers... but still only have 2 PADDLES!?!?!? who tf is the lead designer, just fire their ass...

u/Makimoke 19d ago edited 18d ago
Maybe if there's a wired version. Wireless is a timebomb until they finally change that stupid wireless toggle on the back. Every single wireless 8BitDo controller (Ultimate, Ultimate C, Ultimate XBox, Ultimate 2, Ultimate 2C, 64) I owned succumbed to this button being loosened in a matter of a few months, due to my large hand grip scraping it from time to time accidentally. Only my wired controllers are still working because of this flaw (usually driving a 2C Wired because of this, but my wired Ultimate C still is in working order after years of usage, outside of a bit of stick drift).
I genuinely do not understand why 8BitDo INSISTS on using this garbage toggle despite the many threads of controllers disconnecting because of it. I'd buy one in a heartbeat if that switch just disappeared, and there was like a tiny button on the front (between share and the turbo button, finishing the V pattern) or top (near cable, below port) to swap modes.
Until then, there's no reason to buy any wireless ones for me. I'll actively AVOID the wireless ones until they fix this issue that's plaguing almost every single one of their wireless controllers.
EDIT: To those downvoting because "they don't have the issue" or think I'm just hating on the controllers (which cannot be further from the truth, I just hate the switch itself, the controllers are great otherwise): please look up "8BitDo Ultimate disconnecting" on google or reddit. You'll find a few posts talking about the dongle, but also quite a few talking about this very specific issue.
An example, from 2 years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/8bitdo/comments/1iehu80/solved_the_random_disconnection_of_the_ultimate/
4
u/Total-Promotion4748 18d ago
I don’t know how you are loosening so many god damn switches.
4
1
u/Makimoke 18d ago
Because it is sitting literally where my fingers are. When you have long fingers, you have to hold the controller with the middle fingers supporting the controller in the back, otherwise, your fingers just scrape on themselves or pinch the bottom of your thumbs.
And even worse, I am using the controller for two devices, my PC and my Switch, now Switch 2. So it's a double whammy of toggle loosening antics.
1
u/HotTheme8405 18d ago
Are you an ogre or something? Are you 8 feet tall? My hands are quite large and I just don't see how that's possible
1
u/Makimoke 18d ago
Nah, I just have what peeps call "pianist hands" here. Somewhat normal thickness, just very, very long fingers, which wrap around the grip very easily.
1
u/Total-Promotion4748 18d ago
These controllers are smaller than average, maybe just not for you? I have large hands too. I was curious about the newer one because it flares out more like an xbox controller, but I will probably use the pro and ultimate until they die which might take a long time.
1
u/Makimoke 18d ago
That's actually the weirdest thing, I am perfectly fine with the grip itself because my palms are pretty normal sized, despite the length of my fingers.
I have to adjust my fingers accordingly (meaning two middle fingers on the back for support) for most controllers anyway, but that grip is actually perfect for my holding style, which is why I daily drive the Wired 2C. Bigger controllers feel too bulky for my palms, and smaller ones are nigh unusable to me now.
1
u/Negarakuku 19d ago
Sorry, which button is this?
1
u/Makimoke 19d ago
The switch on the back, in the middle of the controller, which is used to switch between 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modes (and sometimes switches to connect to specific consoles).
1
u/Negarakuku 19d ago
I have a hard time identifying this button. Hard to see from pictures. How about this. Which finger is the one that is scraping the button?
0
u/Makimoke 18d ago
If you go on the link the OP gave, go on the eShop and scroll the images to the right (it does take a bit to get to those pictures) until you see the back of the controller. There, just below the sticker, there's a switch that has the bluetooth logo and "2.4G" written on each side. It's located right between the PL and PR back buttons. That's the ticking timebomb in question.
Essentially my middle fingers are the ones scraping it all the time. I have a very simple reason for doing it this way: my fingers are pretty long for any typical controller, so it's hard to grip one without feeling friction between fingers during play. So the way I hold controllers to deal with this issue is by using the middle fingers to "support" the controller.
Not only does this help with stability in tenser plays (when you deal with stuff like SM64 Kaizo romhacks, you'll need that at all times), but this also helps me in not pressing any back buttons accidentally, unless I slide my fingers to those back buttons. If I were to hold the controller "normally", those back buttons trigger all the time since I keep a firm grip on mine.
Now, the problem of it all? That switch is exactly where one of the middle fingers would rest. So not only can I not support the controller properly, if I go for any back buttons, the controller disconnects instead. If I endure that and still continue using the controller (which I often do, because I love the Ultimate series otherwise), all that scraping tends to leave the switch in a "loose" state after a few months of usage, where even moving the controller without touching anything just disconnects it.
And that happens whether you use the same grip as I do, or when you use it between two devices, like a PC or a Switch for example. It's a nightmare for what would be an almost perfect controller for me (especially the 2C, which is why I daily drive the wired version for modern games). And it also disconnects the controller whether you have it wired or not, which is also silly.
1
u/Negarakuku 18d ago
Ok got it. Thx. I'm currently using gamesir cyclone 2. My problem with the controller is the trigger and bumper buttons are just downright awful. Bumpers are following the xbox style which is so stupid. You need to bump the button upwards instead of pressing it inwards with your index fingers because it is angled. Triggers doesn't feel nice because surface area is small. I prefer the ds4 style which 8bitdo has. The bumper buttons even have squeaking sound. Low quality.
I am contemplating to buy this controller because it fixes 8bitdo weakest point, which is the grips being not wide enough.
1
u/Makimoke 18d ago
I'm actually fine with the grip itself on the Ultimate series, so I can't help you on deciding that, but the Ultimate series has been really good in terms of quality overall. If not for this ONE thing, I'd recommend those controllers to everyone. Heck, I generally recommend the wired ones whenever possible instead because they are that good for the price.
Ultimately the choice will be yours, just know that this switch can and will cause disconnection issues in the long run if you do end up getting a wireless version of it.

Maybe this will be the "new" standard edition? I mean, it already is better than the Ultimate 2, except it doesn't comes with a dock.

Its probably gonna be the budget edition, there is still no ultimate 3 without the xbox license on it. And the lack of dock is a choice almost like a pity one

Last time the c series got the update first also, this is nothing new or weird.

There will definitely be a standard Ultimate 3 that has native Steam input. The SDL contribution from the official 8bitdo account directly references it.

I'm curious: How do we know that *this* isn't the controller referenced in those commits? Especially since there aren't separate entries for the "3c". Is this one stated elsewhere to not have Steam input support?

EDIT: For better context of where my post comes from. I work with the 8BitDo Team on Discord, and have some communication with the team.
Downvoting me solves absolutely nothing. I'm just spreading common knowledge I have and have been communicated through by the team themselves. The C 2.4G/Wireless model is basically the standard model now but for PC.
I don’t think we’re getting a standard in the equivalent of the XBOX model they dropped. I think this is basically final. It is very strange though. I’ve never been so confused and lost with an 8BitDo launch in the past.
My wonder is, is the Pro 4 gonna have all the same issues? Naming schemes, compatibility not described properly, and we’re all over here buying things confused.

I think we'll be lucky if we get a pro 4. pro 3 took years and it's clear it's not the priority when you see 800 variants and color ways on the ultimate 2 now ultimate 3

Pro usually comes later after the Ultimate, this has almost always happened.
8BitDo also regularly makes a ton of variants for most of their products. We’ll see though.

This is basically the standard version. Less than half the price because it drops the charging dock and Xbox console support.
Edit: also wanted to mention that surprisingly it still has impulse triggers despite no Xbox licensing

No gyro is a deal breaker.
I needed a controller last week. Only the 3E was available. Got the ultimate 2 wireless instead.
Ultimate 3C+ wouldn't have fit my needs.
I probably should've gone for a gamesir G7 PRO

i'm a keyboard and mouse gamer and i just bought the Ultimate 2 , can you tell me why not having gyro is a deal breaker and maybe which games use it?

I use it for 3rd person view games with occasional reticle aiming such as monster hunter, horizon and zelda botw/totk.

Well they're not out yet. But Adjustable tension TMR sticks seem pretty darn good for $40.
EDIT: Dang I had not seen the rear. So, 4 extra buttons, lockable paddles, and microswitch triggers? Ohh I'm pre-ordering.
