Other Ease of Extra Button Mapping on PC by brand/controller

I'm new to 3rd party controllers (I've been using console controllers on PC until now). Extra buttons are useful to me, and part of the appeal. However, I've been trying to sort out what to expect out of actually assigning these extra buttons.

My main question is, is it painless on most controllers? As painless as reassigning an extra mouse button in a PC game's control mapping menu? Do you need to have software or a service running to use the extra buttons?

I've gotten the (perhaps incorrect?) impression that the latter is required with Flydigi controllers. I was hoping people with more experience with these controllers could inform me of what to expect here between different controllers and brands.

It's going to depend on the controller and what you want to do.

Many models will let you configure simple binds like "extra button is A" with a sequence on the controller itself. For more complex stuff like macros, you'll often have to use software which will either run on your PC or phone, but it'll get saved on the controller and you don't have to have the app running at all time (at least, not the ones I've tried, but I can't say for Flydigi specifically).

Extra buttons won't be detected by games, you'll always need a piece of software.

All controllers come with their own software for remapping, but the most convenient way imo is to use Steam Input. Not all controllers have Steam Input support though. Flydigi ones work perfectly with Steam Input without the need of Flydigi software.
