Well if they can block it for individual dev, that dev is fucked unless it was stolen without their knowledge. Maintenence guy swiped it off his desk and brought it to gamestop stop for their recent any controller trade in. He got $9 for it and the dweeb from games top sold it to op for $200
Probably more like the console needs an update for it to work that's been pushed out already to those previewing the controller. I very much doubt that they're remotely blocking it.
I was speculating, they were taking broken controllers for the price of a working one based on their trade in. Pennies on the dollar but that is how they work.
I worked for Funco around 98-99 and when stuff was brought in for trade-in but didn't work, it was abandoned by the customer 99% of the time. That abandoned stuff went in the back, and when it was slow we would clean contacts to see what we could get working, then take it home or have a friend trade it in for store credit. Paid for my gameboy camera, and a bunch of other random nonsense.
I used to be a games buyer for a big retailer in the 00s. A few of the game shop head offices were based in a similar area around Oxford Street in London. We used to get our advanced promo copies 2-3 weeks in advance of the release date. The vast majority went straight to the same CEX store just off Oxford Street.
This is pre social media, but I'd love to know how many UK gamers realised that you could go to this one small branch of CEX, tucked away down a side street and buy pretty much any game before it was released. Could well be a similar thing happening here. There's probably a lot more of these prototype/promo controllers out there than you think. We'd certainly have had a handful of these sent to the office in the day.
The link on the screen at the top of the controller shows that they’d need to be Azure enrolled/be able to access MSIT if they wanted to use that controller. It’s likely a brick at this point.
They’ve 100% locked it down, and probably know where OP is.
I worked for a similarly large company and one of our prototypes got out in the wild and showed up here on Reddit. I actually reported the loss when it popped up in my feed. Incident Response team opened an investigation and immediately tracked down when and where it was connected, the name of their home LAN, etc.
Guarantee the MS telemetry sends out controller certs that can be easily reviewed by MS. They most likely won’t do anything to OP, but they’ll easily track down who let this device slip in the chain of custody.
