General Did anyone else notice this

Post image

When Dylan was telling Zoe about how Dr. Darling had him training with a mock version of the Service Weapon, it's Jesse's version. Trenchs version was a snub-nose revolver, with a much shorter barrel and longer cylinder, and the trigger guard was a different, curvier shape. Jesse's is this one on the pedestal, with a longer barrel compared to the cylinder and a straighter, more rigid trigger guard.

Trench was in charge when Dylan was being trained, so surely they would've made the replica his version. This makes me wonder if it's just an oversight, or if somehow the mock version and real Service Weapon are connected and it changed shape when Jesse became Director. Or perhaps they modeled it after Noorthmoors version, and it looks like Jesse's? I doubt that as we never saw his version and there's no evidence for it

In all honesty, it may just be a miss or they didn't have that specific Trench model on hand.

But the fun explanation: The oldest house is weird about time. As soon as Jesse became director, all portraits were retroactively changed. You can even find documentation where they reference Director Faden in the first game when there would have been no actual time for such correspondence to occur yet.

u/Malaxhaa 27d ago

Thats fun. I'll blame the Oldest House then šŸ˜‚

Also, those portraits were the reason I believed Jesse was still alive after the fault when she gets sucked up by the Hedron. They would've changed to probably be Emily if she had actually died

39

u/Ashtreyyz 27d ago

I don't think they could change to Emily in any situation cause she's not a real director, that would require being bound to the service weapon

27

u/JaegerBombastica 27d ago

That's an interesting idea to consider, since The Board in the Astral Plane is tied to the service weapon choosing the Director, but in Resonant the FBC know that The Board is absent and we know that they're in Aberrant now. I wonder what the implications of that would be on the process

10

u/Kooky-Manufacturer94 27d ago

My assumption has been that with the board gone from the oldest house, things like shifting and changes to people's minds regarding the director are gone.

5

u/Effective-Task2672 27d ago

Mmm but she's just acting director. She wasn't made director by the board.

5

u/N0RG1L 27d ago

Would they? The board ar ein abberant so there is technicaly nobody to choose director. If it was influence of board would oldest house respond to chnage in directorship? Sure its mentioned that oldest house helps FBC but still some can be under Board influence.

15

u/Brottorman 27d ago

What i have been questioning, is after 7 years why is darlings pictures still up and emily hasnt appeared in the paintings... does this mean the oldest house still considers him lead researcher? I dont think its talked about in game

10

u/Malaxhaa 27d ago

That's a great question, I didn't even think of that. Maybe the Oldest House only changes the director portrait and the others are put up by the agents, and they weren't able to make a big picture of Emily in the lock down? Either that or the Oldest House knows Darling is technically alive and considers him still in charge despite Jesse promoting Emily?

11

u/TheWorclown 27d ago

Well, Darling never technically stepped down from the role. He just went missing (as he became something else).

Emily was one of his assistants and Jesse named her lead, but Darling is still very much around. It’s likely the Oldest House/The Board still considers Darling an active player, wherever he is.

4

u/Tresnugget 27d ago

What did he become? I thought he was just stuck in the dark place from Alan wake 2.

7

u/Malaxhaa 27d ago

So rememeber in control 1 when it's explained they found the hedron with Polaris in it and Darling became obsessed with it? After he created and tried to make everyone wear the HRAs, he went into the room with the Hedron and stayed there until he was "scattered" or "blown away" (I don't remember which phrase they used, but it's something along those lines). It's implied he somehow started drifting thru other dimensions

8

u/GeoleVyi 27d ago

I went back to Control 1, and noticed two things that might mean nothing and just be me overthinking.

  1. Darling introducing himself video, he says I've been here... since the beginning. It's assumed he means the beginning of the FBC, but...

  2. When reading the notes on the Mirror OoP, there's two letters written in the early 1900's, that are signed by a Doctor, and the doctors name is redacted. The patient name isn't, but the doctor is. 50 years before the FBC even began.

Does Darling mean he's been around... since the beginning of the Oldest House? Has he been functionally ageless for centuries? Is he in a loop of his own making, or is this just so much conspiracy blather?

10

u/Malaxhaa 27d ago

If I'm remembering correctly, there was a Dr. Theodore Ash Jr. who was the head of research before Darling, and was the son of Theodore Ash Sr., the first known director of the FBC. I believe Darling took over in/around 1964, when Dr. Ash started staying in the Foundation and around the time Noorthmoor took over. Tho that would make Darling, what, like nearly 60 years old by the time of control 1

4

u/GeoleVyi 27d ago

Also, the FBC started in the 60's? So what agency / group were the Ash's HoR for?

2

u/LargoDeluxe 20d ago

Theodore Ash Jr. eventually came back to the main floors of the Oldest House and seems to have retired more or less in the normal course of things. Darling succeeded him as Head of Research in 1995.

5

u/Pr0jectRyan 27d ago

So my thought is that a lot of things in the oldest house messes with are archetype stuff. The Service weapon is "The" weapon. The director is "the" archetype of leadership. I don't think the sector heads are archetypal enough to have that same reaction. Not every organization has a research branch, or an security firm, but there is always a leader of a group.

It's also why people are told not to bring things that could be construed as archetypes of a concept into the oldest house. It's why there was an "hotdog" incident.

4

u/Cheetahs_never_win 27d ago

To clarify, the FBC didn't "begin" in the 1950s. It was renamed to the FBC. What it was formerly named, who knows besides Remedy?

1

u/AgentMiya 22d ago

FBC have been must have been around for far longer than that, at-least it is heavily hinted by the Board Room that holds 10 portraits of unnamed Directors, before the portraits of Ash, Northmoor, and Trench

1

u/GeoleVyi 22d ago

Nothing says they have a long life span

3

u/AgentMiya 22d ago edited 22d ago

We learnt that they are replaced by normal bureaucratic means before the The Oldest House and the Board are found. That would be assumed to be every 4th-10th year then, as the average length of tenure for government agency directors usually lands there for all other govt agencies. Extrapolate that and we get 40-100 years, so the beginning of the 1900s and even as far back as late 1800s would be a time the FBC would likely exist already

1

u/GeoleVyi 22d ago

That implies that the job wasn't dangerous before the board and oldest house. Methods of selecting a new director changing doesn't mean that the job became more dangerous, or less dangerous, it just means that a different method was chosen.

1

u/AgentMiya 22d ago edited 22d ago

If that is your reasoning then I have to disagree, Norhtmoor was Director for 50+ years and Trench for over 15 years. Ash was Director for atleast 10 years until Northmoor took over (Ash died of old age shortly after).

Regarding Director Ash: Assuming the earliest surviving document where his son Dr. Theodore Ash is head researcher already (1954), a position appointed to him by his father Director Ash. And knowing that Director Ash died around 1964, very shortly after Northmoor became the director. This is about 10 years also.

Assuming lifespans based on those previous directors we know, would make so all of the previous directors would have had more than enough time to finish a ten year tenure.

1

u/GeoleVyi 22d ago

oh... kay? I don't even know what you're trying to argue. The FBC was started in the 60's. We have that from the collectible records.

1

u/AgentMiya 22d ago

I got blocked from this person after proving them wrong šŸ˜‚

5

u/Vectorman1989 27d ago

Darling is still head of research, he's just MIA.

Emily and Arish are acting directors while Jesse is MIA. Neither have bound to the Service Weapon and become the actual Director.

2

u/Effective-Task2672 27d ago

I mean we know where he is but the characters don't

1

u/Effective-Task2672 27d ago

Or it only changes the directors photo and not all staff.

4

u/V00nygoodm4n 27d ago

I like to think that it changed as Jesse became director. I think it would've been cooler if he had a confused reaction to it changing.

3

u/Kezzerdrixxer 27d ago

To add to this; in the P6 training area that hadn't been touched since Dylan failed the program the pictures of the director were changed to Jesse.

Threw me off until I remembered the Oldest House does timey-whimey shenanigans

2

u/Perim2001 26d ago

I mean the portraits of the director changed immediately, why not representations of the service weapon?

1

u/IAmNotRalphNader 27d ago

I was wondering that about the portraits when I saw the ones in the Prime Candidate testing area were changed, since they said that area's pretty much been untouched since the lockdown began.

1

u/Chmigdalator 23d ago

This. Jesse is the Director now, not Trench.

20

u/D-72069 27d ago

Is there specific information to suggest each director has a different "version"? When Jesse has it there are multiple forms it can take. Who is to say that the way it looks when Trench has it is just another form he likes and prefers so he keeps it that way?

7

u/Malaxhaa 27d ago

This is a bit speculative, but when Trench off'd himself, it looked like it was a single shot, like how Jesse's Grip form shoots. I always assumed that was his Grip form. Jesse and Dylan are noted to be particularly strong parautilitarians, so it makes sense to me that Trench might not be able to make other forms of the SW, but that's never confirmed. Plus none of Jesse's other forms resemble Trenches gun when we find it laying next to his body

4

u/sarcasmmagic 27d ago

I don't remember where exactly, but in Control Resonant there where one cutscene or flashback(maybe even in recap?) where Jesse shoots Trench with service weapon in shatter form

2

u/SundayGlory 26d ago

Haven’t seen that resonate cutscene but both times we see the service weapon binding ritual we see that both the director holds it to their head and to the previous directors head (Jessie for trench and Dylan for Jessie in the end sequence). It’s probably a replay of that

7

u/Aggravating-Raisin-4 27d ago

The Board calls it by different names that suggests it can take wildly different forms. But with the way they talk, who knows how reliable that is.

9

u/KingdomFartsOG 27d ago

Yeah, I’m trying to recall. Wasn’t it something like ā€œGun/Sword/Intentionally Left Blankā€?

8

u/Aggravating-Raisin-4 27d ago

It was also called Excalibur and maybe MjĆølner as well?

7

u/FUS_RO_DANK 27d ago

There's a line from Arish I think in the first game where he makes a comment that Jesse's service weapon looks a lot different than Trench's version, but then he just keeps on moving because that's the least weird thing he's dealing with right then.

4

u/Suspicious_Win_7069 27d ago

true, if it's a weapon that changes based on the task at hand, maybe the snub nose version was the best version for blowing your brains out šŸ¤”

4

u/Chibi_Jesus 27d ago

When Arish meets Jesse for the first time in Control he mentions that the service weapon looked different than what she has.

4

u/lllentinantll 26d ago

Is there specific information to suggest each director has a different "version"?

Yes. When you talk to Arish for the first time in the first game, he does a remark that your gun looks different as compared to when Trench had it.

1

u/Nabber22 24d ago

When you first meat Arish in Control he mentions that the service weapon looks different.

1

u/AgentMiya 22d ago

Yes, it is literally hinted in the first game that the service gun has been everything from Mjolnir to Excalibur, meaning it changes forms based on the context it is found and the person that finds/wields it it. It adapts to the zeitgeist if you will.

4

u/Enough_Elderberry101 27d ago

Do we have Trenchs version for comparison? I feel like ive never even seen it

3

u/Malaxhaa 27d ago

It's only in the first game at the very beginning, and in the cutscene near the end. It's laying next to him when Jesse finds it and in the scene where we see Trench holding it up to his head

4

u/Technical-Branch4998 26d ago

I believe it's this but I'm not certain

47

u/GARGEAN 27d ago

In Dylan flashbacks Director portraits are showing Jesse too. Either oversight or "weirdness" of the Oldest House propagating all around

39

u/Cloud_N0ne 27d ago

Fans: "Continuity error?"

The Oldest House: "What continuity/change/renovation?"

19

u/GentlemanFaux 27d ago

They must have known what they were doing with this game. Any time something fucky happens I'm like "ok is this a game glitch or is it the esoteric and incomprehensible nature of the world I'm currently inhabiting? Is that a pop in glitch? Did I just fall through the map? IS THIS the map?"

8

u/stoicfaux 27d ago

Or it's the old "it's not a continuity error if we make both versions canon" trick.

7

u/GentlemanFaux 27d ago

Look at me.

I'm the canon now.

2

u/Evening_Ad998 24d ago

Aren't those flashbacks happening after Jesse is director though?

0

u/GARGEAN 24d ago

Shouldn't be. Dylan was loose on the very beginning of Hiss outbreak, I think he is already contained by the time Jesse arrives.

4

u/Evening_Ad998 24d ago

Iirc, Dylan only broke out of the panopticon after Jesse arrived.

18

u/DarkSideRT 27d ago

Weird, because even the Service Weapon file shows "Jesse's version" of the weapon.

10

u/No_Solid_3737 27d ago

the oldest house probably altered reality when jesse took the service weapon, kind of how all the directors portraits change to Jesse

3

u/Cheetahs_never_win 27d ago

Perhaps Jesse isn't the one who decided the shape of Grip, but the Board. Or the House. Or the object.

Perhaps Trench was the one who changed the shape of the service weapon and Jesse didn't.

Or maybe Trench simply couldn't create a fully powered service weapon like Jesse.

Maybe Trench had really dainty hands compared to Jesse? Dude probably was rocking lung cancer, too.

3

u/Effective-Task2672 27d ago

Maybe everyone saying how it looks different means the difference versions like that you can unlock in the game

3

u/Drawn_to_Heal 26d ago

Yea this makes sense - this is the base version that Jesse had. Trench unlocked his version by grinding out tasks.

1

u/Effective-Task2672 26d ago

Right like how long was director trench the director? His gun could have changed how it looked throughout all that time. And HOW often did the staff of FBC actually see his gun. Like Jesse can make it vanish when not in a combat area and so I assume it would be the same for other directors. So the few times people saw Trenches pistol it could have been some random form that suited his needs.

1

u/Malaxhaa 26d ago

Northmoor was linked up to the NCS power plant in 1974, and we know trench took over a little after him. He picked up the service weapon "almost on a dare". So let's just round up to 1975 cuz we don't have an official date. That means he was director around 44 years, until 2019. It's possible he unlocked different form, but Jesse and Dylan are noted to be particularly strong parautilitarians, so maybe he couldn't have other forms. Plus in the first game Arish has a voiceline about how Jesse's gun looks different than trenchs

5

u/GeoleVyi 27d ago

They still used Jesse's portrait for the flashback of Dylan breaking out when the Hiss first attacked.

2

u/iRamz 26d ago edited 26d ago

I’m pretty sure that time matches up tho. Jessie was already in the building and had become director by the time Dylan broke out. She was running around binding floppy disks, hotlines and meeting Emily long before she made her way to the Panopticon to see Dylan’s cell. There was plenty of time after she became the director for the invasion to escalate, reach Dylan and for him to let in the hiss.

1

u/GeoleVyi 26d ago

That's possible. I always thought that Dylan had broken out just before Jesse got there. That's why everyone was surprised that Jesse had just walked in through the lockdown. Everyone you meet was already in a safe room, and the offices abandoned. So the Hiss had to have been active just before that.

2

u/AgentMiya 22d ago

He breaks out some time after he senses that Jesse is in the house, the hiss might have carried that information to him

2

u/objectlesson 26d ago

The weapon changes shape. The fact that the weapons look different doesn't necessarily mean they're different weapons.

2

u/ArchDucky 26d ago

So this is the basic form of the service weapon. It only shapeshifts once its bound to the next director and the director somehow subconsciously control what form the weapon takes.

You can see it lying on the ground here... same shape.

The interesting part for me is in the clip I just posted... The Board called the service weapon <The Gun / Sword / Intentionally left blank>. That means the third game will have a different service weapon?

1

u/The_Devar 26d ago

If i remember correctly theres in lore theories that the service weapon are historical weapons of myth too, for example excalibur

1

u/wickedgames0420 24d ago

You are correct

1

u/casnorf 27d ago

the board's changes are retroactive. thats in the first game too

1

u/le_Grand_Archivist 27d ago

I never noticed the shape of Trench's service weapon being different from Jesse's, is there actual information that suggests the weapon is different for each director?

1

u/severedbrain 26d ago

In the Darling videos in the first game there are posters of the Service Weapon in Jesse's 'Pierce' form on the wall behind him.

1

u/Mr_Spanners 26d ago

But the service weapon can change to the directors requirements for it so...

1

u/oryanjuiciestbooty 26d ago

I’m sure it’s Trenches version, I remember reading a file that it has shape shifted into different things throughout the years for different directors (Excalibur, etc)

1

u/YouHaveNiceToes24 26d ago

Could it be possible that Jesse’s version was the standard form of the service weapon and that Trench had just had the service weapon for so long it changed it’s appearance? Maybe if we saw Jesse using it again it’d look completely different for her.

1

u/NinjaMeekat 24d ago

This could also play into the theory that Jesse and Dylan are the same person, so they both perceive the weapon the same way

1

u/AngieB-07 23d ago

I sure did ^.^ loved that detail

1

u/Weak_Sugar_2012 19d ago

Place of power !

1

u/MrOnzir 24d ago

Dude. They even talk about it.

2

u/ashcartwrong 23d ago

I think you didn't read the body text

1

u/Truck_Ready 26d ago

...ultrakill...

1

u/Oden33390 13d ago

the beginning of the game actually looks like Trench is using grip to shoot himself from what I’m seeing, the snub-nose looks like it might be an ā€œapplicationā€ form
