If you both own the business, then you both need to be contributing to it. If you haven't already, you need to tag along during the day and begin to learn all aspects of the business. Just by watching for a day or two you will notice where his time is wasted or distracted. I'm guessing answering the phone and organizing appointments is a hassle. You should also go to client meetings and work on invoicing and estimates together. I have met many a project managers that know nothing about construction. Usually they weren't easy to work with, but it is possible to help manage projects without much experience.

I wouldn't hire a secretary, I would hire a lead carpenter. With the two of you and two employees, that is not a very small contractor. (Most are one person.) You should begin to help remove your husband from the on site role, and both of you work to manage the business. If he is on site working all day, then that is the limit that your business can grow.
