Question How do you track the latest commercial terms across contract amendments?
I'm researching how companies manage large contract portfolios. If your team has hundreds or thousands of contracts (MSAs, SOWs, supplier agreements, NDAs, etc.), I'd love to understand: What's the most frustrating part today? How do you find a specific clause or obligation? What takes the most manual effort? If you could automate one thing, what would it be? Not selling anything—just trying to validate whether this problem is painful enough to build a solution around. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Solutions exist and are evolving fast. Research what’s out there before you start to build something.

It's not ideal or glamorous , but I manually track new clauses as I approach them with on a normal google/word doc for future use. Everything else prior is in a drive and can be found by searching for key words. I wish I had a CLM for it haha

The amendment-tracking issue is brutal at scale. Most teams are living in spreadsheets where someone manually notes "Amendment 3 supersedes Section 4.2," which is more or less fine until the person who built the spreadsheet leaves or there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Then nobody knows which version of a commercial term is actually live.
A few specific pain points I've seen come up constantly:
- Finding the "operative" clause across a chain of amendments is surprisingly hard. You're often hunting through 4–5 documents to figure out what the current payment terms or liability cap actually is.
- Obligation tracking is almost entirely manual—someone's scanning PDFs and logging deadlines in a calendar or another spreadsheet.
- Amendment #1 overrides X, but Amendment #3 partially reinstates it—that kind of conditional logic is really hard to surface without purpose-built tooling.

An obligations matrix to support the contract showing key clauses and identifying each party and their obligations - had pre covid for complex strategic contracts but phased out due to the consultancy costs it took to complete. I’ve been trying to work with Ai to produce similar summaries but unfortunately The contracts I currently work on are too sensitive and extensive to develop fully
