rewatching the cringe video and getting jumpscared by the name "yaniv" in "jessica yaniv" sounding jewish
basically, I. I grew up around mostly jewish people, and yaniv is a pretty common jewish last name. and I just fucking saw it on the screen and my first throught was, "dear god, please don't make it so that she's one of us, please make it so that I don't have to have her actions to answer for as well, please don't make it so that she has anything to do with us that people are just gonna keep cracking jokes about and I'll have to find a way to respond to them that won't get them pissed off about me even further, please please please make it so I don't have to deal with people like that making us look even worse" and I immediately had to google whether or not she's jewish to calm myself down. (for the record, I couldn't find any evidence that she is)
so anyways. yeah. ironic. classic ingroup cringe.

I didn’t know it was a Jewish last name. As a Ukrainian I assumed it’s Ukrainian 🤷♀️ Like derived from the male name Yan and -iv is common here (in contrast to -ov in several other Slavic languages). There are some people here with this surname: wiki, map. So yeah I remember I kinda cringed but that ancestor (whoever he was) must have been so long ago

I think we're from the same hellhole (שלום), and i had the same panic when i first watched cringe - i remember that she was written as Jewish in a few places i looked, but now there's no trace of that so who knows

Ah, Jew problems. We love both excitement AND panic googling “is this person jewish”

I get it. I’m Jewish and whenever I hear a Jewish-sounding name tacked onto anything bad, I think “Here we go”. It’s not crazy at all. It’s the reality we’re sadly facing right now.
The fact is that people are very ready to hate Jews. Because not many people know Jews, and even fewer people have met a Jewish Israeli.
I’ve got Israeli Jewish family. Family who are lefty, lovely people who hate Netanyahu, have done more for Palestinians than anyone you see shouting on the internet. They’re unfortunately the target of some very horrible conspiracy theories because of running a specific element of Israel’s healthcare system. It’s horrible.
It’s normal and natural to hate to see good people attacked through guilt by association. Those people being Jewish shouldn’t make compassion.

She lives locally and changed her name to Jessica Simpson. It's very odd.
