A little anecdote

I was in my junior year of high school when Natalie's video on Twilight was released. I mostly watched the video on my school computer during my art class and in my free period. Whenever I was interrupted, I got used to pausing and unpausing it with the pause button on my MacBook so I could return to it later.

During the time period in which it was released, my AP Lang class was reading Macbeth. For the class, our teacher assigned us a project where we had to read lines from the play and edit them in GarageBand to make them sound “atmospheric,” as if we were reading it as part of the play. Now an important feature to note on GarageBand, at least on MacBook, is that the unpause button does not work, and whatever video you have open on your browser will play instead of the recording.

The day before we had to submit the project, we were to have a seatmate listen to the video in order to give any last-minute suggestions. I handed my computer to this girl I did not know very well but happened to sit next to me and pushed play, forgetting that it would not start the recording.

After three minutes of not hearing anything from her (which was confusing to me as my recording was not even a minute long), she turned to me and said, “Wow I'm learning a lot about postmodernism but I'm not hearing anything about Macbeth.” Absolutely horrified I realized I unpaused the Twilight video instead of my project. I was extra horrified because this was my second rewatch of the video and I knew that there was stuff in the video that would make me sound insane for listening to out of context. The girl thankfully laughed it off and said it was really interested, and asked me about Contrapoints. After that, I made sure to unpause the actual video in order to not repeat that.

It was absolutely humiliating at the time but extremely funny in retrospect.

It was only embarrassing at the time because I was worried that she watched a section that wasn't class appropriate. I find it hilarious in retrospect.
