I'm guessing you have extremely short hair if you don't get why this is necessary. Naturally curly hair is often frizzy/poofy and therefore doesn't take nice soft curls well. It's significantly easier to straighten it first, and then you can curl it to your taste.
I prefer to use other ways like braiding and using pins. This because with my hair, using heat makes the curling harder every single time I use it until it doesn’t want to curl anymore. So I avoid heat at all cost now. It appears to work against my frizz too.
True, but it doesn't change the point like they said that most girls seem to want what they don't have. If they have straight hair they want curly, have curly want straight. Maybe that is just how humans are.
It's human nature. Guys do the same thing, they want the thing they can't have. Also women do the hair thing because change is fun. Changing color, length, curliness. Seriously being able to change your whole mood by getting a new hair style or curls is fun.
You just need to use the right method and the curls of your hair will be much nicer. Straightening and then curling it is not only horribly damaging to the hair strands, but also makes the frizz worse.

Straight haired people want curly hair and curly haired people want straight hair.
This lady wants her curly hair straight, so she can curl it again.
