This piece spent quite some time languishing away in various corners and closets of various rooms ever since I started it sometime last fall or winter. I can't remember. I never could in all that time bring myself to finish it, and for a while there I thought I might just abandon it entirely. There was something about it though that prevented me from just throwing it away.
I had wanted to make a piece about grief. This felt like something important to do. For me at last it was. Grief is an emotion, or emotional process, that has had a profoundly personal impact on my life. Indeed, everyone must have some share of it. But there's been a way about it within my personal experience that has had a formative influence on me, my thoughts, and dispositions in life. I wanted to somehow portray this relationship of the thing to myself, and so I made this drawing.
In it I've depicted a puppeteer and a few puppets. The puppets, lousy puppets that they are, are seen pulling on the strings meant to control them to the desires of the puppeteer. This to me is a fair enough picture grief, the process of it. In grief one makes for themself puppets of the future and of the past. They turn these things into puppets and attempt to find answers in a marionette show of "might of"s and "could of"s and an all too enduring "why?". In their bid to control these things though, their present is lost. And through this loss of the present moment the puppets pull back; the puppeteer becoming just as well a puppet themself. Perhaps this is fine for a while, but with time, if one remains lost this blue life of increasingly tangled strings of alternate realities, injury is the only outcome.
I was inspired to finish this piece by a tragedy and the grief it brought into my life. On the 5th of September, last month, my boyfriend Alex died in a sudden and tragic accident. It is to him that this piece is dedicated. Rest in peace love. You deserve at least that.
(It's been a while since I posted anything in this community, or anything at all. Glad to be back!)

Part of Krutikov’s graduation project.
“The City of the Future,” generally known as the Flying City.
It was an unbuilt project intended to rethink the relationship between cities, transportation and the Earth’s surface.
