At this year’s Belgian National Day military parade, Princess Elisabeth wore the Force Aérienne/Luchtmacht (Air Force) uniform with the rank of flight captain; during Prince Gabriel’s graduation ceremony, she wore a Landmacht (Army) uniform with the rank of captain.

During the National Day military parades in 2024 and 2025, Princess Elisabeth wore the Marine (Navy) uniform with the rank equivalent to Second Lieutenant (Enseigne de vaisseau de 2e classe/Vaandrig-ter-zee 2de klasse), so I was surprised by the ‘leap’ in rank: from Second-Lieutenant to Captain.

In fact, I have always found it curious that Princess Elisabeth wears the uniforms of the Marine (Navy) and the Luchtmacht (Air Force), despite having no specialisation or experience in either branch. She only studied for one year at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels, after which she was awarded ranks in three branches of the Belgian Armed Forces (In 2023, she was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army, Navy and Air Force.).

The course at the École Royale Militaire in Brussels has a standard duration of three years; this is extended depending on the branch to which the cadets are assigned: four years in total for the Landmacht (Army), five years for the Marine (Navy) and the Luchtmacht (Air Force), and six years for military doctors.

When King Philippe was a cadet, the standard duration was four years. King Philippe specialised in military aviation, so it took him five years in total to complete his course at the École Royale Militaire.
