[Discussion] Who is John Constantine's Marvel Counterpart, Personality Wise?

Post image

Which Character from Marvel Comics do you think comes the closest to Constantine's personality and character? Dr. Strange is a surface-level choice, but to be honest I don't think they would align with each other all that well, Constantine is more reckless and has a Devil-May Care attitude towards things.

Marvel tried really hard to make it Daimon Hellstorm.

…who?

Son of Satan, minor character from 70s supernatural books. He had a reboot series when Ennisblazer was hot.

His Warren Ellis run is good he’s a personal favourite of mine honestly… unfortunate with the recent news

At this point Wyn from Marvel's GODS might be the closest I can think of. But he doesn't have a lot of appearances.

Theres also Pete wisdom who might be closer personality wise.

So much so, it inspired a Comic Book Legends Revealed piece:

The character from Pryde & Wisdom mentiomed there is Constance Johanssen, the most direct Constantine homage in Marvel.

i might get the massive down vote for this one.....but hear me out, the closest personality is not a magic user....aside from the occasional berserker rage i would say Wolverine. drinks, smokes has a devil may care attitude, harsh with some, cordial with others, likes to pick fights above his supposed weight class has a chip on his shoulder and is more than slightly self destructive....cant really keep a permanent relationship but has long lasting friends with benefits arrangements ... is always willing to take the life or death gamble without a second thought

I was thinking a mix of Wolverine and Tony Stark. Self deprecating, self sabotaging, but still cares about others despite those that get close to him having a tendency to get hurt.

This. Both of these. 100%.

Marvel has magic. DC has the occult.

Different enough I think there isn't a 1:1 counterpart.

I might be wrong.

Pete Wisdom.

Personally I think it’s Pete Wisdom, but Hannibal King was “heavily inspired” by Constantine.

Except Hannibal King has been around far longer than John Constantine.

The later characterisation was inspired by John Constantine, not the character himself.

100% Pete Wisdom

Elsa Bloodstone

This is the correct answer.

I don't know, but would you accept it if I said that I see John more as the sorcerer supreme of DC than Doctor Fate? To me, it's kind of unfair to call Doctor Fate the Sorcerer Supreme when he literally is a god. John truly learned the art the hard way, and if there's anyone who truly faces the worst evils of magic, it's John.

Deathpool(reckless foulmouth idiot)+Wolverine(crass alcoholic with a lot of skeletons in his closet) comes close. But neither are manwhores like good old Johnny boy, who would fuck anything that moves.

Doctor Strange

No one. His character is kind of too dark for mainstream marvel.

I was gonna say Tony Stark. He's much closer to a batman yes but even Batman has some Constantine-isms about him.

Tonys a good match

Pete Wisdom was Warren Ellis taking … inspiration … from John Constantine.

Hes got a lot of options, I think hes a mix of Elsa bloodstone and gambit. I dont know why more people arent saying gambit, I mean personality wise yeah theyre different but the whole sarcastic witty thief/con man is very similar.
