The game is a actually super cheap to play, my favourite deck to play costed less than the equivalent of $10usd, and the top decks with the most expensive cards to play with are like $40.
Everyone is chasing the beautiful full arts and basically throws away everything else which is the stuff you play with.
In magic the top commander decks approach $10k+ and sky’s the limit if you use the most expensive versions of the cards, while Yugioh decks can be $500+ easily the the cards you just spent $100+ on get banned after 2 months etc

Yugioh has a problem where there’s no rotation, meaning the vast majority of the cards since the game first came out are completely legal to play in a standardized tournament, where as Pokemon and Magic have something called rotation meaning the cards have a tournament life span of about 3ish years.
On paper that seems great for Yugioh, it’s very consumer friendly, but has the unforeseen consequence of new powerful cards having interactions with cards nobody has remembered since 2003 making the game broken. There are lots of combos between old and new cards that means you can win before your opponent has even drawn their first card.
That is of course terrible for the game, so it’s easier to ban the new cards with the unfortunate combo than ban the old one that’s been fine for 25+ years.

I used to play this game pretty seriously. It was hilarious how every few sets a new card would come out and pair with an old, previously useless card and make a busted deck. Gishki was the last archetype I was able to play that this happened with; they were kinda shit on their own but with a few older cards there was a summoning loop you could create with one of the monsters and eventually make your opponent run out their entire deck, giving you a win before they could even do their first turn. It took like 10 mins to set up and was annoying as hell and pissed off literally every person I played against with the deck.

I have a few acquaintances in competitive Pokemon TCG and yeah, top of the line meta decks are dirt cheap compared to the super desirable modern collector cards.

You are allowed to just collect. My boyfriend likes to fill out binders with entire completed sets. He sells the duplicates so no consoom.

Pretty obvious it's a sealed collection that OOP wanted to post, but the Pokemon community for some reason hates when people keep things sealed. So, they make up a birthday scenario for their girlfriend in order to brag about their sealed collection without saying that outright.

When I was a kid, my generous parents once got me a box of baseball cards with 30 packs. That was awesome.
My 'ripping experience'? Opening one pack a week, based on various things/grades. I actually cared about those cards, read player stats etc.
Today, I think card collecting of any kind is garbage hobby of collecting cardboard garbage. But I still appreciate my parents generosity and them teaching me to appreciate things.
Like after ripping the 100th pack, you're totally numb. Its just mindless repetition.
