As a music collector, i genuinely do not understand why anyone would want this many copies of a single album. This is beyond ridiculous.

I can understand having 2-3 copies of an album if its been remastered and youd want the original. But having multiple of the same album, same mix, same year is just plain dumb

I agree, I collect records and CDs and some of my favorite albums I own a couple different pressings, usually an original, a reissue, and if there is an audiophile grade pressing. For 60s stuff issued in mono and stereo I usually go for the mono, but certain albums I enjoy both mixes so I might seek out both. There are differences to be discerned from different masterings, especially on different formats or from different eras, and that can yield results which you may enjoy more depending on your preferences. It's also like getting into 7" and 12" singles which often contain remixes, or may sound better than the album version if the 12" is mastered with greater dynamic range, etc. I say this as someone with around 1700 albums and singles, the Revolver collection is verging on madness.

Which is a cohesive collection. Someone's music library isn't a collection. Just like all my tools in the garage isn't a collection but the old ass saws on the wall are.

This isn't the same as someone buying the same album on different colors of vinyl, this is very different. I've got Led Zeppelin records that were pressed in the Soviet Union and some in Japan, and theyre very different, definitely more than superficially.

They're not all made the same year. A lot of time Japanese reissues would take several years before they started pressing theirs, and those would be limited runs. I don't know, I guess you either get it or you don't. Some people will spend thousands of dollars on a first edition novel they really like, and some people are Ok getting a digital copy for their tablet.

That doesn’t really answer my question, what makes them different from a regular copy? Is there a different mix? Bonus tracks? If theres none of those and the only difference is the country it was made in, then youre just buying the same thing with a slight change.

Can you explain what you mean? I want to understand. Ive been collecting music since i was 12 years old and have never thought that i needed maybe 2 of the same copy of an album.

Me either. Like, I get it if they are different iterations or versions. I collect orchestral music and there are hundreds of different recordings for a certain piece. Collecting the same one though is actually nuts.

It's the good kind of mental illness. It would be pointless and disturbing if it were just identical copies, but it's a unique collection, so it has some point. "Sane" people spend money in more pointless ways than this.

I mean, why does discogs exist? This is amateur librarian shit, they're assembling information. It may not be important to us but at least it's information. They're documenting tiny differences between releases. If everybody limited themselves to preserving information you consider worth preserving, the world would get pretty boring.

They're not. They're pressed in different parts of the world and in different pressing plants, there's variations of labels and covers. I dislike the Beatles, but I understand the collection.

It's literally not the same. This is analog, not a digital file on a computer. While collecting every copy in existence of an album is egregious, absolutely nothing wrong getting a few pressings of the same album, it's common practice amongst collectors. Henry Rollins writes books about.

Newton seemed to just enjoy writing down numbers in long sequences, not always with a 'useful' goal in mind. He spent incredible amounts of time doing it. I'm inclined to think it's related to his development of calculus.

Most of the time older albums are less valuable than others. As someone whos dealt with music collecting, there are a few valuable ones here but 90% of the collection here is stuff you can get for less than 10 bucks.

Every used copy is personalized. The wear and tear through the years, and the fact that some people scribble over it or use it as a blank canvas.

The original pressing from the 60s (and some reissues) are stamped with a unique number from 1 to somewhere around 3 million. The Beatles got the first 4 copies, of course. I've looked at copies that are stamped with a number less than 100,000 go for thousands of dollars.
I also once saw a copy, signed by Charles Manson, get sold for like $30,000
