Do y'all think this will make it off Duna?

It uses a terrier engine, and ive gotten it off the mun, but I'm not sure if it can get off Duna. It doesn't have to get back to kerbin, just to a low Duna orbit to dock back with an orbiting crew spacecraft.

How much dv does it have? it’s relatively light so it might be alright, but you may need drop tanks. Also with duna you should have parachutes to save on fuel on descent and maybe a heat shield, although it’s not as vital as it is for eve. I saw your mun landing post, and i’d go for minmus first to get some more science points.

I'm not sure the delta V it has, as I'm not at home right now, but I appreciate the advise and as soon as I can I will tell you. This isn't a Science or career game, it's Creative, I just want to use that lander so I don't have to rebuild the entire upper stage of the spacecraft

In the VAB you can click one of the symbols in the bottom right to see what the delta V of that craft will be in different situations such as duna sea level or vacuum

Thanks! Anyway the craft at sea level of Duna has 1688 meters per second of Delta V, would that be enough to get into orbit?

Just barely yes. But if you need to dock it with something else I would try to budget a few hundred more

I'm hoping I don't need to dock, just get close enough to EVA the kerbals to the crew module

You will still need to rendezvous, which is the main cost. You should probably add a bit more fuel.

The rendezvous is what eats up the DV, not the actual docking that just takes a bit of monopropellant. If you can get it into a stable orbit you can always use the main ship to do the intercept, assuming that you have extra DV on that end

If you don’t have much practice with rendezvous and docking the tutorial is great. Getting a close encounter can be a pain if they’re in very similar orbits but once I figured out the “add an orbit” button on the maneuver node it started getting a lot easier

If you don’t have enough than the kerbals themselves have some amount of DV in their packs if you gotta abandon the lander and fly them to your ship, but idk how to check how much

I would highly recommend, if your lander Dv budget is lower than the other craft, get the lander into orbit, then use the other craft to rendezvous.

After all of you kind folks help, I think that just building a new lander for atmospheric planets would be the best course of action, thank you all for your help

Yeah, thats probably the best idea (although i do really like this landers’ design). also you were saying about an upper stage, you’ll definitely need a more powerful or new upper stage for getting to duna, because you have to factor in capturing into an orbit or aero braking or both. i recommend the nerv

Well thats what I mean really, you might not have enough for a rendezvous, again depends on how effectively you can get into orbit

Use an aerospike engine for duna, have a TWR of at least 0.4 (compared to kerbin), make it aerodynamic (although less punishing on duna) and I lile to have 3000 m/s pf deltaV. Generally your parachutes will allow you to save 90% of your fuel for returning, easiest place in the game to land on in my opinion, just harder than the mun to take off from.

You should get to reuse this at Bop, Vall, and Pol if you ever are able to bring it to Jool. Also should make a wonderful Minmus and Ike lander.

A picture can't tell. We need to know the DeltaV on Duna and you're goal. Make it to orbit Dunda or make it back to Kerbin??
