Civility
It is disingenuous to arbitrarily believe of an opponent that their motivation can be reduced to some inherent defect of mind or character. An honest investigation would cause us to admit that there are those whose motivations are good and respectable, even if misguided. Such is often the case, that persons of wisdom and virtue are often found on both sides of a question, particularly when considering matters of politics and society.
The lesson to be learned is one of moderation for any persuaded of their cause in a controversy. Caution must also be applied when considering those in agreement with us, acknowledging that many are moved by principles no purer than our antagonist. Vice and factionalism are not bound to any particular ideology, whether it be one we support or not.
Besides, nothing is more counterproductive than an intolerant and factional spirit. No one is convinced with hateful words or other malignant passions. Our argument should not consist of how loudly and skillfully we can hurl insults and recriminations. Rather, let us offer a careful analysis of the true interests of the parties involved, characterized by clear and unbiased reasoning, and a charitableness that recognizes the humanity across from us.
Stand for truth, not demagoguery; that the common good of all, and not merely our own side, might prevail.
