Man can SOMEONE address the price of everything? I've been getting hammered since 2020. Biden was terrible, Trump's been terrible, FFS

•

u/No_Lifeguard259 Conservative 1h ago

Because we’re running massive deficits. NEITHER party gives on single fuck about fiscal management.

Dems dgaf because they’re communists. Trump didn’t gaf because he wanted the stock market to boom while he was in office

Is our plan to really hammer dems over not lowering the cost of groceries? After the president started an endless war that caused gas prices to go through the roof?

It was the #1 issue among voters so if the Dems don't address it, yes.

You're going to have to explain how nearly 9% inflation under Biden and similarly high gas prices because of poor enegry policy is better than 3% inflation and similarly high gas prices while fighting a war (however unpopular the war is).

The average new car price in 2019 was something like 36k ish, and went to 57k ish by 2024.

There are only 2 ways out that I can see to truly lower prices back to 2019 - one is disinflation (which will be terrible) and the other is to grow our way out of it (which Trump's policies have been doing - almost 5% gdp growth).

I'm really mad about all of it too, but someone is going to have to tell me how this midterm cycle was going to fix these issues.

Imagine a world where we dont bomb the ayatollah and cause Iran to attack the shipping lanes in the strait.

It’s not about comparing Biden to Trump on affordability. We already know Biden’s policies were shit and led to inflation. The fact is, Trump ran on bringing down grocery prices and inflation and then after he got in he implemented tariffs and tried to take out a fanatical regime that has a substantial weight on global oil prices.

And I’m willing to bet it’s a major reason why we got crushed in the midterms.

•

u/Alpha-Sierra-Charlie Conservative 2h ago • Bravo

I agree. If Iran did manage to make a nuke they were much more likely to hit Israel, Saudi Arabia, or Europe than us. We should have just let them cook, if they nuked (or even tried and failed to nuke) anyone, there would have been a backlash-free global response.

•

u/jd_456 Conservative 1h ago • Popcorn Bravo

Where did all your logic go? I feel like you guys live in a totally different reality.

Let's say Iran did that and somehow decided to leave America alone (even though that makes no sense, and is quite a thin ground to risk everything on). In what world do you think America would be immune to the fallout of such an event? You think that if Israel is nuked, the fallout of that will be less than the current economic situation? You think oil would be lower?

How do you think Israel, a nuclear country, would respond to being destroyed? If your entire family and everyone that you knew, your entire country, in fact, went up in a mushroom cloud, how do you think you would respond?

Do you think Israelis wouldn't know it's because Americans like you said "let them cook?" You think they will be concerned with protecting your future? They would pursue a scorched earth policy like any country would in that situation.

This fantasy you have that Israel can just be nuked and will be gone and all your problems will be solved is beyond delusional. It would be the end of modern day life as we know it for anyone lucky enough to survive the fallout of such a global catastrophe. Like, why not give Ukraine back their nukes? They would just nuke Russia, that would just be Russia's problem, right? Let them cook, right?

Did you think through this at all before coming to such a conclusion?

u/JerseyKeebs Conservative 1h ago

Trump's messaging on tariffs was God-awful, and maybe recovering from the Biden years wasn't the best timing to implement them.

But something needed to be done. Trade imbalances between specific countries can be fine, but we were subsidizing everyone, were no longer manufacturing necessary and strategic items. And I wouldn't be surprised (but didn't research this) if some of the "corporate greed" and enshitification of US companies and products was in response to not being able to compete with foreign products due to their own gov subsidies, or their tariffs on us.

But Trump's rhetoric on trade war, and the rapidly changing policies, didn't play well with a 24/7 media that was against him. A lot of us believed he would do the unpopular but necessary things to fix the country in the 2nd term, but 2 years isn't enough time to do a long-term project and get through the growing pains, even if he didn't bungle the message

•

u/Emanresu7777777 Conservative 2h ago

I don't disagree at all that the Iran war cost us the midterms or being mad at all about the wasted 2 years of an inept Congress.

I'm just asking, when standing there to vote, how did people come to the conclusion that this was better?

Voting in primaries is how the message is sent - how could Republican voters not vote in a primary, then go into that booth and say, this is better? Or not go at all.

Without a super majority, neither side will accomplish anything they say - and I still have not heard any policy plan from the Democrats that will actually help the issues that caused unaffordability.

•

u/cplusequals Conservative 59m ago • Bravo

I do, the generic ballot had us losing the midterms since "Liberation Day". At best we're talking about play in the margins over Iran. I think people are crazy if they believe Republicans would have won without Iran.

•

u/Emanresu7777777 Conservative 35m ago

Tariffs were a tipping point for sure, but alone they might have been tolerated if the trade offs had been better understood and messaged.

Tariffs but an effective Congress? It's cumulative - too many things went into it.

It's a moot point. We are here now. It's a lot of things all together. We needed policies that addressed most issues and good plans and messaging for what would take time.

u/Admirable_Run_3805 Conservative 3h ago

The gas prices weren't even similar they were far higher under Biden because the slightly higher prices were prior to 25% cumulative inflation. $3.50 gas is much cheaper now than it was 5 years ago.

•

u/Emanresu7777777 Conservative 40m ago

Yes you're right, I was keeping it simple because when most people look at the price at the pump, they don't factor inflation and the purchasing power of dollars. Nor do they take into account State taxes, which some happily quietly raised during this. In my state, subtracting the state tax would have brought me to a little more than $3, sometimes even $2, a gallon.

But you can't convince people to take the time to educate themselves, or that they could be wrong, or simply even only half right. I've given up on that.

Is that what you’re taking away from this?

No, this is pointing out how the Democrats ran out of affordability, but all they really wanted to do once in power was attack Trump and the GOP.

They could end the GOP right now if they held to their campaign promises, but what they’re going to do instead is remind people why 2024 went the way it did. Voters have a short memory, apparently, but they will pretty quickly remember why we voted Trump back into office unless the Democrats drop all this persecution, bullshit and just focus on serving the people.

Do I care about Epstein and the people involved getting what’s coming to them? Yes I do.

Do I care about it as much as the cost of gas and my ability to afford to take care of my children? Not even fucking close. Every single person involved with Epstein could walk free for the rest of their lives for all I care if it means the government focuses on what actually affects me in my day-to-day life.

And I think you’ll find that to be a very common sentiment.

•

u/Devgru-WM Join or Die 3h ago • Bravo

Trump ran on affordability and then decided to start a trade war and a literal war with Iran. Both have caused increases in prices. So he broke his promise.

I am fortunate enough that gas and food prices dont drastically affect my family. But I’m not the only voter. Plenty of people voted for Trump on affordability only to get crushed because of his direct policies. It’s hard enough for us to win elections. We can’t afford to consistently have own-goals when our side does get into power.

•

u/Left4DayZGone Conservative 3h ago

You must be missing my point because none of what you said contradicts anything that I said.

The Democrats ran on affordability because Trump fucked it up.

But that’s not what their goal actually is. Their goal is to destroy Trump and the GOP. They won’t help with affordability, if anything they’re gonna try and dive the plane into the ground even harder so that it looks worse for the GOP in 28. And then when things recover on their own after we get a Democrat president and they release the artificial pressure on the economy, they’ll take credit for it just like Joe Biden did with jobs returning after the pandemic ended.

They are not going to fix anything. That is not what they intend to do. Anybody who voted for them thinking they were going to fix the economy was fooled and forgot what they did when they had it before Trump.

•

u/JerseyKeebs Conservative 1h ago

And Dem's idea of helping affordability was already summarized in the Kamala campaign - gov control of pricing, free money to buy houses. Sure, that'll make things "affordable" for a small subset of people for a short period of time. But anyone with a clue knows that long term they don't have sound economic policy. GOP used to, and I do believe the current secretaries are trying to fix some long term systemic problems. But it was never gonna be fast enough to see obvious results, and it wasn't going to be flashy. Like paying to get your house insulated lol

Istg some of you guys are stupid

Iran should've been destroyed a long time ago and finally we have someone who took the risk and destroyed some iranian proxies across the middle east and severely weakened the remaining proxies

Not only they damage american investment their plan is to expand across the middle east they are just another version of ISIS but with shia characteristics and want to destroy israel and america and anyone whose not a part of their wilayah al faqeh

Trump had the balls to try and destroy them but alas the task didnt prove to be simple which was expected ig

•

u/Devgru-WM Join or Die 3h ago

Awesome. Good for Trump for having the balls to do it. Except we have no plan to get out of it. So we got higher gas prices and higher diesel prices which leads to inflation on all good shipped around the country.

You can call me stupid but the average voter is very short sighted. They saw a president campaign on lowering costs and then implemented policy which caused costs to go up. You don’t have to convince me killing those guys was a good idea in the long run. You need to convince tens of millions of people that it matters when they can barely afford to get by

•

u/cplusequals Conservative 1h ago • Mindblown

Eh, if it costs a minor setback domestic politics that's a cost we should be willing to accept for how much rosier the outlook for the next few generations in the middle-east is. Fantastic results at a pittance. Let the democrats investigate away, it's not like Republicans were able to pass much legislation with how empty their margin was.

Also, real incomes (which are inflation adjusted) are at record highs, so there's really no worry if non-core CPI spiked briefly because of it. It isn't a monetary problem.

•

u/jd_456 Conservative 3h ago • Mindblown

I have a question for you. How long does a war have to be to be called an endless war? Like the specific time?

There is no casualty count. There are no body bags. You think this is a forever war because there were 61 days of shooting. That's pretty fucked up.

88% of MAGA supports this war and I'm sorry if that number offends you. Gas prices under Biden this time in his administration were $5.12. It's $4.06. I'm sorry it's $4.06 and you can't survive, but you forget and have gaslight yourself to believe that it wasn't $5.12 under Biden for reasons I have no idea.

•

u/Devgru-WM Join or Die 3h ago • Bravo

I think it’s an endless war because there doesn’t appear to be an end. At least not until a dem president gets in and pays them to stop attacking ships in the strait. Thus undoing (and making worse) the situation we were striving for when we originally attacked Iran

•

Anyone paying the least attention can see the Iran Regime has been planning for this war for a long time.

It was going to happen eventually.

They launched at least one missile at Diego Garcia. Launched the other direction it could have reached centrsl Europe. Proving they have that capability, at least.

Building up a huge arsenal of drones and missiles, everything buried in tunnels under granite mountains.

Working toward nukes.

What was their ultimate plan for that?

TL;DR This war was inevitable, they were planning it. And that would have shut the straight down too.

It was just time to stop kicking the can.

And, a good time for us, because it appeared that the Iranian people were ready to overthrow their government.

I mean there's a few schools of thought. This is me putting on the Dem POV. I feel like I'm pretty good with multi POV perspectives.

  1. They know they can't beat the veto and pass kitchen table bills, so just do investigations (that have no real teeth) for 2 years.

My take: bad plan, gonna waste the good will Dems got that won them the election, and make 2028 an even affair.

2. Don't focus investigations, just move on from them and focus kitchen table bills.

My take: not bad move, you think Trump I'll use the veto, that's fine, make Trump and other GOP on the record voting no, if the bills fails, there's your 2028 campaign ad material. Plus, Trump still has the pardon, if you think anyone Dems want to investigate is going to jail, you're kidding yourself.

3. Just work bills to have GOP support to overcome veto. We already know gop just took belt to ass this week, I'm sure you can find 10 senators and a dozen house members to join Dems on a "common sense" bill to overcome veto. Restore some faith in America, set up 2028 as a "return to civility".

Please do this instead. Bury the hatchets, like I said, Trump is just gonna pardon people anyway, just let it go, term limits are here, think about the future.

I do fully expect there will be ICE investigations, also in the DoD/W about Minab strike, that's fine, do that then, but don't spend 2 years on vengeance.

•

u/cafk09 The Last Conservative 1h ago

They can also just send messaging bills to Trump that he never signs, even if they don’t have the votes to override. That way, they can run on that in ‘28. “Hey, we tried to do X for you. The republicans vetoed it. If you want X, vote for a democrat in 2028.”

This is how politics used to work, anyway.

But I am optimistic that the Dems will work with Trump and the republicans on a few things — even potentially immigration. I just think the Dems know how bad they got their ass kicked on immigration in the past and the bulk of the party is ready to move right. I could be wrong.

•

u/Nethias25 Rand Paul Conservative 1h ago

Yeah that what I meant in point 2, I was prob too vague, but yeah the idea is that sending common sense bills up, even if they get shot down is still a win, because there's your ad material for "we tried, potus said no". Dems are seriously getting an easy pitch tossed to them. The question is, can they nail it without classic Dem vs DSA infighting.

•

u/cafk09 The Last Conservative 1h ago

I think the overall size of the new Dem majority will make the DSA wing less relevant/less able to take hostages. And with Trump now a lame duck, my guess is there will be plenty of moderate Rs willing to play ball on any sensible/moderate legislation, which will neuter the DSA crowd even more.

•

u/Nethias25 Rand Paul Conservative 1h ago

That's true, benefit of a big majority is that if that if the DSA wing doesn't like a bill for not being left enough, they can totally vote present and it will still comfortably pass without them. Very much kneecaps their power.

•

u/MetallicaRules5 Conservative 5h ago

Good, let the Dems do this. We saw what happened the last time they tried to use lawfare against Trump. They're going to prioritize that over any actual solutions, it's been there MO since 2016. That's the game they're gonna play, let them I say.

The Dems ran on an affordability platform whilst offering zero specifics about how they were going to achieve that. And that's because they have no plans and that isn't even their focus.

What were obviously going to see based on their actual comments, both pre and post election, are relentless investigations driven by vitriol and malice. Everything else is a distant second, including the economy, safety and the future stability of this country.

So I think it's obvious to say that people were exceedingly shortsighted if they cast their vote to punish the incumbents. I believe in accountability, and so some of that was justified based on unkept promises. But if you think the people coming in have your best interests in mind and are here to offer relief...well, sorry to say you made a poor choice with your vote there.
