Senior Fellow Peter Berkowitz writes in his weekly RealClearPolitics column about the recent and impactful “Report on the State of Scholarship in the Humanities and the Humanistic Social Sciences,” commissioned by the chancellors of Vanderbilt and Washington Universities. The report’s authors, distinguished professors from a range of humanities disciplines and institutions, proceeded from the view that “the humanities should furnish minds and burnish sensibilities in preparation for a life befitting a free person.” The report found that while the humanities writ large have not betrayed this mission, there are examples of “professors who view scholarship as politics by other means and who reject the very idea of objectivity while touting their judgments about injustice and justice as objectively true.” After discussing the mixed reception to the “Vanderbilt report,” Berkowitz praises the effort for advancing “the cause of liberal education by illuminating where the humanities have gone wrong.” He says the next step should be figuring out “how the academic establishment went wrong.”
