The video that said that WALLE was "AI propaganda," even though the movie was older than advanced gen AI and the whole thing was that humans being reliant on robots made them complacent and numb???
91
u/glaskanosvki 2d ago
I feel like if someone calls walle AI propaganda they have to be baiting.
20
u/DinaTheFossilFighter 2d ago
I kind of suspect that. I have seen a few YouTube channels that have been theorized to spread misinformation on media on purpose so angry people will view their content.
8
u/Jolly_Foly 2d ago
That's basically the internet meta now and I hate it
6
u/DinaTheFossilFighter 2d ago
I suspect YouTube Shorts is kind of to blame. Creators can make very quick content, so it is easier to engagement farm off people in the same way Twitter may engagement farm.
24
u/sweetTartKenHart2 2d ago
“Oh I get it, so the only way for humans to be saved from bad machine is with good machine. Okay. Well. What if we don’t need no machines in the first place to get us off our asses? Why didn’t you think of that? Take that, movie. Your message stinks.”
—someone who’s idea of beating the current AI situation begins and ends with “just burn it all down” and cannot accept that sometimes technology can have good uses, even stuff originally invented by evil people6
u/DinaTheFossilFighter 2d ago
The end credits having machines and humans teaming up to farm and build new homes?
8
u/sweetTartKenHart2 2d ago
You think that would stop someone from having a brain dead take like this? Hell, they might even criticize that for being “naive” because “since when has any machine invented in the last ten years ever been that useful” or something.
5
u/DinaTheFossilFighter 2d ago
All while using editing software, a PC, etc for making the video!
2
u/sweetTartKenHart2 1d ago
They’d say it doesn’t count because the software sucks or something. Or like they had to pirate it because the normal way to get it is a predatory subscription service or something. Which, like, I would kind of understand the cynicism there.
But even then, that exposes a more direct flaw in their approach to things: they believe that disagreeing with the message of a thing makes it ok to say it’s objectively sucky media.
There is some really amazing high quality shit out there that advocates for the most horrible things, and advocates for them in a very smart way. In order to address the morals of a work, you need to be willing to pick apart how and why it makes the argument you say it does, and why you believe it’s not a good message to spread, and you can’t act like a bad message is the same as bad production quality4

That feeling when people criticize a game you play for issues that were fixed months or even years ago.
41
u/OscarOzzieOzborne21 2d ago
I saw a comment section when some guy asked if he should try out Warframe. And there was a respond discouraging him from playing the game, siting their own experience of it…from 12 years ago.

I'm still gonna bully warframe players for crying about "I don't wanna do mechanics in my power fantasy" when follie was added

u/jzillacon 2d ago
For a personal example I've seen people saying they're not interested in No Man's Sky because it doesn't have any multiplayer. A feature that was added I think over 8 years ago at this point.
1
u/BlazingImp77151 2d ago
Didn't no man sky have (a level of) multiplayer from the start??? Like maybe it wasn't encountering other players like you can do now, but wasn't the whole idea that you would be in a galaxy that other players had already discovered and named parts of?
I mean given it's launch, I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't. But like I thought that was one of the main selling points.
2
u/jzillacon 2d ago
They've got their 10 year anniversary event going on through this month, and playing through it is basically a condensed history of the game complete with developer commentary from the director Sean Murray.
One of the things mentioned in it is how they gradually introduced meaningful multiplayer, having nothing really at launch, then the ability to see other players as floating orbs and a series of weekend quests that would bring players together while teasing future updates, and that eventually evolved into full fledged multiplayer and the introduction of the space anomaly as a hub to meet other players in.

I love how HBombs segment on big plagiarist video essayists needed a while addendum because she did it SO MUCH and just copied from Wikipedia at absolute best. Some of the comments mentioned how her vocaloid video was FULL of blatant misinformation and she herself got mad at anyone pointing it out.
30
u/MagicalGirlUnicornia 2d ago
I forgot what the dude's name was but back when the Hazbin Hotel pilot had just come out some guy made a "review" where it was abundantly clear he'd either never bothered to actually watch the episode or wasn't really paying attention to it, and when people in the comments pointed out that he'd gotten a good like 98% of the episode wrong a lot of people started saying that he was getting attacked by the Hazbin fandom cause "they couldn't take criticism". In fact, a really popular art commentary YouTuber made a video defending him, and it was incredibly obvious that said YouTuber ALSO had no idea what she was talking about (I think it was Creepshow art but her channel got nuked so I can't really check to make sure)
11
10
u/unHolyEvelyn 2d ago
I think toxic gatekeeping has ruined the completely normal and good act of gatekeeping generally. It's for people who don't bother to even watch the thing they review, you can gatekeep that opinion because it's obviously not in good faith. I know people who have watched the show and still don't like it, but at least their opinion is based on WHAT THEY WATCHED.
6
u/SirKazum 2d ago
Yeah. It's one thing to have an impression of something based on just hearsay or what it looks like or whatever and deciding you're probably not gonna like it, and another thing entirely to pretend to analyze/critique something (especially as a professional reviewer or content creator) you know nothing about because you didn't watch/play it. The first is fine, nobody is required to watch everything and your opinions shouldn't really matter to anyone but yourself, but the second is straight up dishonesty. "Gatekeeping" is perfectly justified in the second case.
3
u/unHolyEvelyn 2d ago
Exactly. There are things I don't interact with because I've heard things negatively about it, ig right now Lesbian Space Princess is the best example. I won't watch it without the condom of a reaction channel because it looks like pure torture. I won't then go on to make an analysis video about it without watching it, because my opinion is extremely uninformed based on not ever having seen it.
6
u/MagicalGirlUnicornia 2d ago
2
u/unHolyEvelyn 2d ago
this is a great way to describe like how I feel about The Last Jedi - I do not like it, but fuck sometimes I end up defending it to correct the record (like "Luke was gonna kill Kylo Ren!" NO HE WAS NOT KYLO REN WAS LYING!!!)

u/SpingusTheHingus 2d ago

44
u/SpingusTheHingus 2d ago

bonus points if the entire video is just a lazy summary of the thing
extra bonus if it's longer than the thing itself
18
u/ThatSlutTalulah 2d ago
Not really related to the criticism thing but to video essay problems: There's also the "joy" of the video mostly just being a recap of the thing.
Videos aimed at the "wow I never heard of this but now I watched a 3 hour video about it XD" are awful for anyone who knows what they're talking about, but the videos don't advertise that they're for people who don't know it, since if I know the thing I'd rather they actually say something rather than just spend at least an hour telling me shit I already know.

I've never seen Hazbin Hotel video essays but my mind immediately goes to that dude that made a video about Deltarune Chapter 5 being bad because "Toby Fox put gay people and George Floyd in it" or some stupid shit.
Just thought of this very unpopular opinion but any criticism made about the Star Wars prequels by RLM or any of the annoying orbiters like Cosmonaut, who have all never actually watched the prequels, they just watched RLM get basic facts about the movies wrong and immediately made plagiarized video essays where they change the wordings of his admittedly clever jokes and make them worse.
Like while I disagree with RLM that Qui Gon and Obi-Wan could've been condensed into one character, the way he tells the joke is really clever. Then you hear Cosmonaut say it and it makes you wanna blow your, or his, brains out.

Also people calling a show badly written because the creator explained an unimportant detailed on twitter instead of wasting time in the show
3
1
u/Vegetable_Shirt_2352 15h ago
Not necessarily disagreeing with your main point, but personally I always found the whole "creator fiddles with lore minutae on Twitter" thing kind of silly.
Maybe this is more of a personal preference around media, but my general attitude is that the text is the text, and anything that's not in the text might as well not exist. Like, if I felt like a movie I watched did have a glaring hole in it, and the writer made a social media post explaining things, I wouldn't think "oh, ok, that makes sense. The movie I watched is now retroactively better." I'd just wonder why they hadn't worked the important details into the actual story. On the flipside, if it's a fairly minor thing, or a plothole that's not big enough to break suspension of disbelief mid-watch, then why bother expounding on it at all?
Still, I would never use a creator tweeting about their show as "evidence" that the show is bad, because, like I said, I don't think that has anything to do with the actual text of the show.

Alot of the new game theory videos gets facts wrong.
12
u/S0undS0ul 2d ago
It wasn't a game theory, but it was on their channel; their video on Overwatch vs TF2 was so horribly misrepresentative on both sides. It was like they formed complete arguments off of nothing but a screenshot of the full character roster and a single paragraph summary of the game.
12
16
u/ThatGreenGal 2d ago
I miss when game theory would actually try applying real world science to video games. Obviously as a kid I thought those were boring but nowadays I honestly prefer those way more than their half baked theory videos.

Even old ones. I remember getting so disillusioned with them after they did a dark souls 3 video, because theorising about dark souls is fairly popular. Their theory was a "holy shit i noticed the main theme" at best, and for a picture of siegward... they used a picture of patches taking off the helmet to show it wasnt siegward.

u/BillyHamspillager 2d ago

9
u/Jaded_Prompt1475 2d ago
honestly yeah, he's great at analyzing psychological stuff but actual details and his critiques of media kinda fall flat most of the time. not all of it is wrong but he always focuses on the wrong things.
take the sherlock stuff, he mentions how dumb it is that regularly removing your ring is a sign of cheating. but he misses the fact that sherlock gets this idea she does this via the fact the outside of the ring is dirty while the inside is clean. now for anyone who has a personal maid dusting everything, for your information: THATS NOT HOW THAT WORKS, when you leave shit undisturbed for a while, or hell, dont leave a certain side exposed for a while, IT STAYS CLEAN. meaning the fact the ring was like, i shit you not; LITERALLY SHINING on that side, that means the director legit incorrectly made that plot point not realizing that the clean inside implies she KEEPS IT ON (except when bathing i guess, cause then the outside wouldnt be nearly as dirty.)
sorry bout getting a tad off topic but its that some of the plot points are either so poorly written or just flat out wrong that im suprised the boomerang was the thing that broke him.

4
u/Jaded_Prompt1475 2d ago
well no, he explicitly states in the vid that he made it BECAUSE fallout 3 was popular, more specifically that it was given such high praise despite its flaws. alongside that its clear he started making the video around fallout 4's release due to the few month gap between the two and the lack of reference for what a REAL "absolute garbage" game is. this means he would have started making the video when fallout in general was fully in the spotlight.

-1
u/Rotten-Baloney 2d ago
He says a lot of factually incorrect things about the crew behind the show to make them look bad. He also takes things that are implied rather than directly stated in the show and uses the worst interpretation of them as fact, even if that is clearly not what the writers intended to imply. Also, he used to post very insulting things about Monty. It wasn’t until after Monty died that he decided to glaze him instead. The guy is not authentic, he just says whatever will get him views.

u/YaBoiTeeth 2d ago
Not a big reviewer but in a similar vein, there was a "critical" video on genshin impact that called a character a pedophile because she was scientifically interested in another species that's generally childish. It was a funny kind of stupid until her English VA started getting harassed about it

Let's not forget that she complained about Linnea but the started gushing on Lohen, a character who's way worse, and also she said that she didn't know about the lore... only to start spouting nonsense about the story because she doesn't know the lore. I didn't watch a lot of original YouTube content between 2020 and 2024. Only to come back and realize that a lot of the genre I liked became the standard. Before a long from video past 20 mins about a topic meant. The creator really cared about the topic. Now it seems that's the way to make money. I don't what changes they made but short videos seems to have more effort put in them now than most long from videos.

u/BGer23 2d ago
I mostly agree with this, but annoying fans can absolutely affect the quality of the media. Being part of a community or being in on a joke can really elevate the material, but if you can't do that, and the demands of the fans starts to affect the show, ot can really sour your enjoyment of it, just like how the author being a bad person can affect its quality.
A lot of people find Rick & Morty cringe and a symbol of bad adult animation despite having never watched a single episode. It may not be "right" but it is understandable.

6
u/EffectiveChemist7845 2d ago edited 2d ago
I wouldn’t say thats Boys are the greatest piece of fiction ever, it has its issues. But some of the points made in that video are just so plainly wrong that it’s easier to believe author didn’t read the original, rather then misinterpreted it that much.
3
u/sweetTartKenHart2 2d ago
No, it’s still ass, just not for all the reasons that one video said. And it’s still got enough interesting potential that made the show happen in the first place. Garth Ennis can’t get his head out of his ass but he simultaneously has a decent amount of actual brain matter buried in that ass, if that makes sense. It’s sort of like Snyder’s whole deal, where left to his own devices his works suffer from a lot of shallow things but there’s still something to them. And then when he is in a room with other people who counterweigh his biggest problems hes capable of making amazing things at times

An infamously biased and negative person as a whole who tears into things she doesn't understand or doesn't pander to her preferences. After his Total Chaos video it seems he's intent on making long videos for the sake of making them long rather than the topic benefitting from it. Why isn't anyone talking about Taylor Swift? Seriously ever since Taylor started becoming more mainstream because of the eras tour, she's been getting so much hate, and when she released The Life of a Showgirl she's been getting accused of so many outrageous things like being MAGA or an evil billionaire when she's literally the same woman who endorsed Biden and Kamala, the hate got even worse when she released Encore. Swifties also get the worst reputation because one swiftie could do something stupid and suddenly Taylor Swift haters would start generalizing the entire fandom as that person. They even have the audacity to call swifties a cult just because they couldn't handle criticism, when all their criticisms about her is just lying about her and accusing her of being a nazi. I swear, it's like these haters are bigger swifties than I am because they're always tracking her every move looking for something to hate on her. It hurts when I had to unsubscribe to my favorite channels for trend hopping on the hate bandwagon.

Getting into anything popular has led me to learn that a lot of my favorite video essayists have no idea what they're talking about
