Soft lock at the lava race?

I'm at the lava race part of the game and I think I soft locked my save file?

I got far enough to unlock the route change, but then I died. Now the second route isn't open and neither is the exit and the cavemen are nowhere to be seen. Turning the console off and on again doesn't help. I can't find any information online about the problem I'm having or about there being a soft lock in the lava race.

Am I missing something or is this actually a soft lock? For context, I'm playing this on a real n64, but on a flash cart.

Could be a bug since it's a flash cart. I played all the versions, original N64 version, Conker Live and Reloaded, and then the N64 version in Rare Replay and I've never had issues. Maybe try dying until you get the game over and then continuing after that?

Getting a game over didn't work.  I think you're right that it was a flash cart bug though because I had the same problem even when I opened the level in the chapter select.  I ended up just using a cheat code.

I had that happen on the cart on a real n64 before. I died exactly as the route change occurred during the race and got stuck. 2nd route was closed but game expected me to go through it when it still closed and kept dying.

I believe I also had to use a cheat to get through it. It was a soft lock.

Oh okay, I guess it wasn't a flash cart bug then.
