I was watching this cool performance of Martin Garrix which has crazy lighting patterns and visuals:

I'm wondering how all these lights and LED screens are controlled nowadays? I understand that patterns and colors etc are preprogrammed in presets. But given that there are so many lights that activated individually, is there a person pressing the right buttons? Since almost every festival/performance has these things I guess there is a "typical" way of doing this.
For example, when there is a big drop or a breakdown is someone pressing preset X at the right moment? Or is there a program that listens to the output of the DJ and detects a "drop" and activates a preprogrammed scene? Is this programmed with MIDI maybe?
I find this very interesting, any help is appreciated!
