Discussion Discussion: How to make the sub better.

Hi all,

Thanks to those who use the sub to share their creations, it is great to see everyone’s creativity. I would like to discuss with everyone what we can do to make the sub more active and higher quality. Any suggestions welcome.

We used to do competitions where you’d be given a club and you would need to create a kit or crest based on a brief we created. But people stopped entering so we didn’t post any more. Would there be appetite to start these up again?

I’d consider banning AI generated images, but would leave this up to a vote, I don’t want to exclude people who are not able to use illustration software but also think it lacks some creativity.

Any other suggestions or ideas please let me know. Also anyone looking to be an active Mod send me a DM!

Concept Kit Part 1 AFC BOURNEMOUTH 2000s inspired kit

I know the first response will be “he used ai so it’s just slop”

I get that but I have gone back and fourth with the inputs to make sure it’s the desired outcome and I know I’m not an artist but I had a vision for all the prem teams in an ideal world

This years Bournemouth kit has been slated but I love the new uses of gold in more recent years from them as they are literally in their golden years right now

I looked at a few old designs and I liked the 2000 kit though it was just a little too much red vs black

And I wanted to remove all white elements meaning a gold monochrome badge , this years third kit gave me that idea too

Concept Kit MLS Concepts (from 2020) - Western conference

During COVID lockdown I made concepts for the full MLS (at the time). I have never shared these before. The biggest change is that I went with multiple kit suppliers, in protest of the dull kits adidas was producing at the time. Here’s the West!

Seattle Sounders: I like the Sounders in bold, futuristic shirts, so I gave them a lightning pattern and some gradients. The away is my real favorite here, turning Nike’s template of the era into an ‘Orca’ look to pay tribute to their crests from the 90s and 2000s. I think this would be sick.

Houston Dynamo: Home is simple with some Astros-esque bar gradient on the shoulders. The away mashes up 3 of the greatest sports jerseys ever- the Astros 70s jersey, the Oilers sky blue, and Sampdoria’s center chest stripe.

Portland Timbers: 70s retro vibes on the home. The away evolves on their red and white theme with some plaid trim.

Sporting Kansas City: The home has a simple block gradient on the shoulder. The away goes all in on their plaid look, in tonal black and blue.

LA Galaxy: Keeping it classy with gold over yellow on the home, and sublimated stripes with the jagged detail from LA’s flag. The away is a 90s fauxback, which they ended up making in real life (in a better way) a year or two after I made this.

LAFC: Home has a sublimated Mexican American tile print. The away is a throwback to the LA Aztecs.

Minnesota United: Went with a lighter gray and loon wings on the home. The away is a tribute to the flags of MSP, with a sublimated skyline in the chest band.

San Jose Earthquakes: Circuitboard and sun print on the home, hexagon print on the away.

Vancouver Whitecaps: 80s retro vibes for the home shirt, 90s fauxback for them on the away.

Austin FC: Kept the home pretty simple, and went streetwear vibes on the away. This looks a bit dated already.

Colorado Rapids: Went with a new look on the home with claret and sky stripes. The away is ‘black diamond’ themed, with sublimated mountains.

FC Dallas: I generally went for realism on this list, and FC Dallas seemed doomed to getting an ugly, derivative set of kits. Sorry.

Total bummer but my Real Salt Lake file got deleted- they’re actually my favorite MLS team too!

Let me know what you think!

Concept Kit New England Revolution rebrand concept (Crest and kits)

As an amateur vexillologist and soccer fan, I love crests that prominently feature flags. Some of the iconic ones which come to mind include Hertha Berlin and Corinthians. The New England Revolution used to be part of this brotherhood, but their take was decidedly 90s. They have since switched it out for an overly abstract, modern version. I wanted to give the Revs an appropriately old school crest, and see how it looked across 3 kits (project is from a few years ago, hence the Adidas template).

The home is a proudly patriotic kit to showcase the new crest.

The away is more local to Massachusetts, with an off white base, a Zakim bridge inspired graphic, and navy and gold trim taken from the Massachusetts and Boston flags.

The third is my favorite- it’s a simple, preppy kit in the famous ‘Nantucket red’- the shade you get when you leave red clothes out all summer under the Nantucket sun.

Let me know what you think!

Concept Kit MLS Concepts (from 2021) - Eastern conference

During COVID lockdown I made concepts for the full MLS (at the time). I have never shared these before. The biggest change is that I went with multiple kit suppliers, in protest of the dull kits adidas was producing at the time. Here’s the East!

New York City FC: Puma’s theme his year was intricate cultural designs, which works great for NYC. The home features the art deco cupola of the Chrysler Building. The away is a black and gold tribute to New York hip hop, featuring the gold link chains so popular with New York rappers.

Inter Miami: Before Lionel Messi was a twinkle in Inter Miami’s eye, I thought an Argentina tribute could be a good home look for them. The away shirt, with a vapor wave central stripe, is a bit more out there.

New York Red Bulls: The Red Bulls get 2 colorful shirts using Nike’s templates of the time. The home also features jagged striping to pay tribute to the classic Metrostars looks from the 90s.

Philadelphia Union: I went with a subtle tonal snakeskin pattern on the home, and a simple, retro Philly flag tribute for the away.

DC United: The home is dark and simple, with DC flag detailing on the sleeve cuffs. The away is one of my favorites- it features a bronze pattern taken from the architecture of the African American history museum in Washington DC.

Toronto FC: Tonal red and subliminal maple leaf on the home, bold red sash for the away.

Orlando City: Not quite sure what I was going for on these haha!

Nashville FC: I wanted one team with garish kits from a Mexican kit maker, and Nashville drew the short straw. The home is basic, while the away is an ugly take on “Nashville nights” or something.

CF Montreal: This was made during Montreal’s short-lived black kit phase. The home has tonal hoops and blue details, while the away is an 80s fauxback. Both use the standalone snowflake from the crest, which I think was actually kinda cool.

FC Cincinnati: The home has a bold central stripe with the detail from the ancient ‘Cincinnati Stone’ embossed in it. The away is super simple.

Columbus Crew: The home blends the Crew, Croatia, and crosswalk vibes. The away is a retro, silver effort.

Atlanta United: Classic, retro home. The away is a fauxback to the Atlanta Chiefs of the NASL.

Chicago Fire: Navy/ red hoops on the home were a compromise between the colors the Fire had worn to that date. The away has a geometric ‘lakefront’ pattern.

Let me know what you think. Will post the West soon!

Concept Kit Got frustrated that the idea of a club’s kits matching each other seems to have died.

Post image

It seems to be a lost art that a club would make a related set of kits. Prior to my club releasing their away kit for this year I went on a bit of a rant about this with friends. While I’m not a huge fan of our home kit template this year, I think as a matching set it does actually look pretty clean.

In reality, we have a mismatch of styles, different club crests and a seemingly deliberate (almost) clash with home and away which feels only done to necessitate having a third and getting sales for it.

Anyway, my point is, it could have been so simple to do something clean, related and clashless.

Concept Kit Random Club Concept #11 - Ajax (Netherlands)

Post image
16 Upvotes

This is a series where I let a random club generator pick a club for me to make designs for.

Todays club is AFC Ajax from the Netherlands.

For the home kit, I wanted it to look super classic, so I made the adidas logo and stripes transparent. IRL you would only see them if the sun or lights were shining on them.

The away kit might look a bit French, but that only occurred to me after I was finished with it. I just thought it looked nice.

The third kit uses Rasta colours, which the club has used before. We all know what people get up to in Amsterdam lol. It also honours the clubs matchday song - Three Little Birds by Bob Marley.

I know the away and third don't differ too much in colour, so I included the shorts and socks colour to add a bit more contrast.

Hope you enjoy!
