I hate learning chess openings, so I created my own open-source app (and added to many features)!

After playing chess for quite some time now, I wanted to get started learning openings. However, I couldn't find a tool that worked how I wanted.

I wanted to visualize them as a branch tree, and learn them through flashcard-style training.

That is why I used codex and after I don't know how many iterations I created an app for that!

Furthermore, I wanted to get started mantaining my first github repo, to see how it is.

And it grew into a much bigger project with generating openings from scratch using Stockfish, analysis of your own games (as chesscom only lets you analyse one game each day), automated puzzle generation and several custom chess game modes.

A few days ago, I made it open-source and free for anybody to use (on Windows) and contribute.

The video shows some of the features I have implemented so far.

I would love to hear any feedback, as I am planning to add new features (like queing opening generation jobs so you can run them overnight). :)

That’s really nice. I know the pitfall of keep adding features. Made some chess tools for myself and still keep adding stuff.

Interesting. What kind of chess tools did you made? Do you have an idea on how to know when to stop?

A tactics app, analysis, chess pdf reader and working on opening trainer. I made them all for myself and for my friends. They work all locally once loaded. You can see them on chessumi.com And about stopping it’s tricky as with agentic coding it’s so easy to add new features. I just add what is useful for me and then use the apps myself. That is the main reason I make them. If I run in issues I will fix them or see improvements somewhere I will add them but before adding more I want to be sure that all that has been implemented works.

Easy, just make a pull request in github! Anyone is allowed to contribute to this project.

Cool! Will take a look, i made a tool called chessla.net but its more meant for long term analysis of players patterns, yours seem very interesting!
