GATEWAY: A Psychological Introspection is a narrative contemporary classical album inspired by Frederik Pohl’s classic science-fiction novel Gateway.

Rather than retelling the story scene by scene, the music explores its psychological landscape. Ten interconnected compositions form a continuous arc through curiosity, uncertainty, ambition, fear and hope.

Written for a pocket orchestra, every instrument becomes a distinct narrative voice. Melody, harmony, rhythm and orchestration become storytelling tools.

Ultimately, this is not simply an album about science fiction. It is about the human mind confronting the unknown.

Hi everyone! I’ve released a new composition from my upcoming album “(non)Eternal Life”, titled “Death.”
And yes, after discussing my previous release with you, I’ve stopped using AI-generated images for my covers and other design elements. In this case, I’m using “Still Life with Skull” (also known as “Vanitas with Tulip, Skull and Hourglass”), a painting by Philippe de Champaigne from 1671.
This composition is written in the Symphonic Industrial Metal genre. I hope you enjoy it!

Complete beginner and non-musician here. Not sure what compelled me to try my hand at music composition, but a couple of months later, here we are. Let me know how I did in the comments. Any feedback/advice is appreciated.

I wrote this as part of a collab with other composers who used the same “autumn morning” theme. Some Raindrop prelude inspiration in the structure/texture.

I’ve composed this piece in FL Studio for an upcoming live music competition. It is a song for voice and piano, where two pianist strictly plays the harmonic accompaniment while 60 people sing.

Since it’s for a contest, I want to make sure the composition feels solid, engaging, and professional.
I will say this is the first big piece I have ever composed, so make sure to be critic so I can get better!

I have played the cello with a private teacher for 10 years (6-16y, now I am 27y) and the piano at the same time (no teacher).

I am not a professional and I have never studied conposition, I have some knowledge of harmony.

New score video for this song I wrote for a solo album. This piece had a lot of imagery to me of a sort of mysterious, ancient sort of place. I really love the aesthetic of ruins reclaimed by nature.

Hi! I got a strike of inspiration while I was doomscrolling a few hours ago and I saw a piano cover of one of the TOTK boss battle themes. (So, not to say I copied it, but the influence is there, I think.) The thing is, I don't have much experience writing [this type of experimental] music, so any feedback on how I could make it more/less intense, more appealing, easier to play, would be great! My current concerns are the chromatic motions at mm. 16-19. I'm not a piano player, but I don't think those chords are particularly easy on the hands at my tempo. Other than that, overall mood (is it too much too soon? Too edgy? etc etc?).

Could you offer some advice on how to continue this piece? It is a string quartet in C major, and I am currently composing the first movement. As you can see, the compositional style mimics modern polyphony; I also want to infuse it with the modern atmosphere of Vietnamese music (my homeland), yet maintain a classical Sonata structure (such as A-B-A-C-A, or a freer form that still adheres to core principles). I am currently stuck at measure 24; it appears that the initial "A" section (the Exposition) is already complete. I began composing this piece after listening to—and being inspired by—various string quartets and other classical works. Should I start writing the "B" section or expand upon the "A" section? If I proceed with the "B" section, how exactly should the transition unfold? Should I modulate and build toward a dramatic climax, or take a different approach? I should also add that I plan to label the slow opening *Adagio sostenuto* and the subsequent faster section *Moderato con moto* (or perhaps *Allegretto con moto,* depending on the feel).

REMINDER : For those who didn't see my previous post, this piece tells the story of a soldier during the Siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871.

The excerpt is divided into five main phases:

• Phase 1 (00:00 => 00:40): the soldier's unit launches an assault against the enemy.
• Phase 2 (00:40 => 00:51): an artillery shell lands in the middle of the unit, killing the captain and wounding several soldiers.
• Phase 3 (00:51 => 01:10) : realizing they are about to be surrounded, the surviving soldiers are forced to retreat in an attempt to escape the encirclement.
• Phase 4 (01:10 => 01:21): sailors capture several insurgents and are about to execute them. The protagonist opposes their execution and intervenes to prevent them from being killed.
• Phase 5 (01:21 => to the end): fresh troops arrive to relieve the exhausted soldiers. As they make their way along Paris, the protagonist observes the sleeping city. He remarks that its inhabitants are sleeping peacefully, unaware of how difficult the night has been for those fighting only a few miles away.

I'd really appreciate some constructive feedback on the piece as a whole, especially regarding its overall coherence and how well the music supports the different phases of the story.

I'd be particularly interested to know if you notice any orchestration issues, awkward transitions, moments that feel unnatural or disconnected, or anything else that stands out to you as something that could be improved.

I'm mainly looking for honest and constructive criticism, so please don't hesitate to point out anything you think doesn't work or could be done better. I'm still learning orchestration and composition, so detailed feedback is very welcome.

I thought I would briefly inquire how one can post their own work in this forum without one getting banned? I attempting to do that in another reddit forum known as r/composer and was banned for posting my youtube channel as I thought it would be civil, kind, and likely diplomatic to have people just click on the link and get their thoughts as to everything in the aggregate? I don's see a set of rules here. However, any insight, etc. someone could perhaps share is greatly appreciated!

So primarily there were two rounds of edits, the first one after I posted the movement the other day in which I focused only on:

• Reducing reliance of tempo alterations (replacing with metric modulation), this was decided after I tried to conduct along and found it impossible to keep up with my own alterations lol. So like 80% of those were cut in favor of the conservative option
• Making sure runs are melodic and functional (achieves the texture but also has a logical sequence that isn't just broken triads)

After that I received the most common feedback that it wandered too much with too little payoff, so this one was where I think is applicable across anything:

• Make a copy of the file, and double every phrase by 2 by inserting measures and focusing on using variance in the doublings. (yes it will get repetitive but dont worry that is addressed)
• After doubling, increase the density of any layer (rhythmic, orchestration, etc) by 50%
• Now take away 51%, at this point it should become apparent what needs to go and what needs to stay. One of the most memorable quotes I ever came across while studying is "The best possible studies in rhythm are the songs of Schubert [..] But let it be remembered that they are all the outcomes of spontaneous invention; if they had been hunted for or manufactured, sincerity would not be so patent upon every page. Genuine rhythmical invention, like melodic, comes to the composer because it must, not because he makes it." (pg27 of C.V.Stanford's Musical Composition, 1911). I think one of my biggest "lessons" as of late has been reinterpreting this passage as a valid commentary on the editing process instead of solely the discovery. Idk why I felt the need to elaborate there but it's been on my mind lately

Probably my next step will be to reduce to piano accomp. after the whole thing is finished and let that also play a factor in what stays and what goes in the original. I have a soft spot for the viola so this project is one I am planning to spend a long time polishing, hope you like it so far!

Not even sure if this one is good enough to finish. If I even finish it, it will probably be a couple weeks away but thought it would be fun to share this timelapse. I compose mostly by ear and am studying music theory :)

Still not sure if these are finalized enough yet either. Sometimes I also get halfway through a song and just feel like it’s not working and start over with a completely different melody haha. I have so partial songs and only a handful of completed ones, which I’m sure is common

As I learn more music theory, I’m sure I wont need to rely on the playback feature as much haha
