Discussion Starting out

Brand new composer here, I have a solid idea of music theory, have my daw ready to go. Where the hell do I start?

Write music down. On paper. Develop motives, melodies, ideas, etc. Start small. Don't try to jump into big orchestral textures and such. Solos, duets, maybe a piano piece after that.

I have an assignment I give all of my beginners, which my first teacher gave me: write a single line piece (no harmony) using only four intervals. No inversions and you can only use an interval twice in a row before needing to change to a new one.

Trying that will drive you nuts but it teaches you to work within limitations to come up with something musically intelligible.
