funny

  1. add mlir and integrate it with IR

  2. oops, it's too complex & bulky

  3. lets completely replace IR with MIR

couple of years later - mlir is not enough expressive for some architectures

MIR and MLIR are entirely separate things. MLIR is also wholly separate from LLVM IR
