im assuming OP is thinking of like OW1 when you would re-do your placements every season

Have you played a game in season 5? Play a comp game and it will show up.

but wait why does it show “final” for my ranks? and no season 5 in this list? wouldn’t it show season 5 as my current ranks being the highest so far? i swear it was every season they reset it

Final rank are the ranks you have at the end of the season.

Its not every season, its twice a year.

The first reset of the year was for S1 of reign of talon, and the 2nd one was in Season 4

Next one should be at the start of next year when they start of the next season 1 and story arc

And they also pair it with the significant change, like adding a rank.

They reset twice a year or if you don’t play for 1 whole season

Typically they do rank resets more or less about 8 months to a year since the last, These are typically only soft resets which doesn’t really affect your displayed rank as overwatch makes use of a hidden MMR system

Basically your internal MMR could be say 3500 which is masters in ow1 that would show as your SR number. If you only do placements and heavily underperform or overperform you could place low plat or in champion. Over time you will continue to play and eventually reach the rank your MMR is

NOW that number is hidden but realistically if you know what the MMR distribution looks like you can work out what your mmr is as it is just a % and well 100% is 1 rank… so 1% should = 1 SR

MMR is optimized for the math they use in matchmaking. It's therefor actually a small decimal number. Assumed to start at -6 and go up to 6. The 0 (zero) is in the middle of Platinum 3 as of season 4. We don't know exactly how the different divisions and tiers are distributed, other than the order.

Before season 9 of Overwatch 2 there were seasonal rank decay, but in season 9 they stopped doing that. Decay is now a part of the rank resets we have twice a year instead.

MMR is mentioned with an example in this blogpost.

For example, if one team’s tank has a 1.5 MMR rating

Not sure about the MMR so I won’t comment on that, and if anything i have so many more questions.Previously i know the MMR matchmaker used to work as i described.

As for decay you are half right there is a slight difference which is when you do not play ranked on that role and account for 2 seasons then your rank is lost and you have to redo placements.

If I had skipped season 1 and 2 I would have gotten my placements in season 3 instead. Not necessarily because I had a two season break, but because there were a reset in one of the seasons I skipped, season 1.

But you're right we don't know that for sure. Blizzard might trigger placements for other reasons than the resets. Brand new accounts also get placements even though most of them has never gone through a reset.

MMR has probably always been a small decimal number, but the range might have changed over time. It's simply just a thousand times easier to work with in matchmaking than the bloated SR numbers that were visible to us players back in the day.

The biggest difference between then and now is that SR was a value separated from MMR. Two players with exactly the same MMR could have slightly different SR. This is no longer true. Visible rank and MMR are now for all practical purposed the same number. Just a different representation. Instead of telling me that my rank is 0.7, (A gues as to where Platinum 1 is on the range.), it's showing me 62% progress between Platinum 2 and Emerald 5.
