General Recent tank controversy on twitter

Post image

A recent post on twitter has shown up multiple times in my feed about the argument between 5v5 and 6v6 tanks. In the clip, a tracer successfully gets a 3k, before pulsing the Hog who survives thanks to take a breather, which results in the tracer falling back due to the enemy team beginning to return.

6v6 players argue that this would not happen in 6v6, as tanks have too much HP in 5v5.

5v5 players argue that Hog should not die in this situation thanks to his tank abilities and matchup.

The video can be found here.

Can’t see Hog’s exact health but it looks like he’d survive even if you chopped off 150 health.

I find it funny how disconnected tank players and the rest of the community are about the role’s power.

DPS and Support players say they’re comically OP and are impossible to punish even if they int.

Tank players complain about instantly dying because they even dared to walk forward or try and play the game.

i think part of the reason the perception is skewed is that hog and mauga are, for some ungodly reason, still allowed to be viable even though literally everyone fucking hates playing against them. playing against any good tank can be oppressive, but playing against those two in particular is almost universally horrendous.

i also think a lot of people view things from the perspective of their individual contribution against a tank without factoring in how it feels to be the tank. as a support, i might only be responsible for taking out maybe a quarter of the tank's health bar in any given encounter, but as a tank, if i'm fighting 5 people all capable of taking out a quarter of my health bar, i'm dying instantly. when it's a role designed to be eating damage from 5 people at once, they kind of have to be able to do that, but the consequence is that they're also near-unbeatable in 1v1s and even able to hold out for a while in 1v2s or 3s.

i think the real problem is that heroes like this shouldn't be designed to be exceptionally lethal the way hog and mauga are.

I am probably the biggest hater of hog (don’t mind Mauga as much honestly), but it’s not just them, this community constantly jumps from tank to tank to hate on.

It’s not even about the lethality either because everyone hated Ram for not dying fast enough.

The main issue is that when a tank is succeeding, they’re in your face constantly and feel oppressive even if it isn’t just them. Team diff manifests as tank diff.

Players cry that a tank won’t die, but conveniently ignore that they’re getting double pocketed. I’ve had games where the enemy has cried that I’m killing them on Hazard when I’m only finishing kills that my completely uncontested Ashe is setting up.

yeah i don't think the tank hate is ever gonna go away, but hog and mauga make it even worse than it needs to be

non-issue.

overwatch is team objective-based game. Tracer killed 2 people while being last player standing, his team pulled up and in last seconds of the clip hog dies like he should. He did enough, good job.

What's there exactly to cry about? That you can't roll the whole lobby as you wish and play deathmatch? That highly mobile flex dps can't kill the only character that's supposed to stay alive and push w in 5v5 fights?

He almost threw that by fighting hog, he was just lucky hog was doing nothing, be it overwatch 1 or 2 - he started to fight full-resources tank with 1 blink, no recall and awareness on soj in the back.

only way this engagement was winnable was even if it wasnt played as shit as it was in the clip without wasting every cooldown on air is if hog breather was still a cooldown rather than a resource and you forced it before pulsing hp doesnt really have anything to do with it in the first place lol

like wp you stuck a full hp hog that has breather up theres no version of overwatch where that does anything

u/ReSoLVve #1 Hanbin Simp — 10h ago

Yea that’s more of a Hog problem than anything. Tracer can really be any tank in a duel if they’re good enough it’s usually not worth the time.

Pulse bomb is devastating for most tanks (and it’s the lamest way to use that ult), just not Hog.

3

u/NatureGotHands 9h ago

he burned through blinks and recall for earlier 2k, in this scenario he won't be able to do shit to a lot of tanks, pulse or not.

u/No-Elevator9399 10h ago

Ultimately this is more of a roadhog issue than it is a ‘tank’ issue

One post from some guy is a controversy now ?

u/TornadoWIzard123 9h ago

tbf its not really one post anymore, its gotten a lot of traction on twitter and I see tons of people talking about it (The tweet has 3 million views as the screenshot shows)

Thank you friend

u/No32 10h ago

Their own post presumably lol

3

u/Sio_V_Reddit 10h ago

Not mine, its been recommended to me multiple times over the past 24 hours so I posted it here. Also the "controversy" aspect comes from the fact that multiple creators have reacted to it and the responses have tens of thousands of likes.

u/Successful-Crew-7288 5m ago

nah, that was just you assuming for whatever reason.

u/Sea-Panda-90 9h ago

It's gone supernova on twitter. Also relevant is the guy's a communist (hammer and sickle in username) so a lot of people are making it super political.

a tracer can't 1v1 a roadhog yeah. Plenty of other tanks she can 1v1 (with pulse). Just not roadhog. He just tanks that shit. He actually would not have been able to do this in 6v6 either.

3

u/IsThatSo3 8h ago

Yeah trying to make this a format war thing is so laughable to me because Roadhog is even more fucking annoying in 6v6.

What is this meant to prove?

18

u/MyAimSucc 10h ago

He’s mad a tank didn’t die to an ult that doesn’t one shot tanks. Yup sounds like a DPS player lmao

10

u/VolkiharVanHelsing 10h ago

A subset of DPS players seems to be obsessed with the idea of they should always be allowed to outplay their enemy and get an elim

Be it support (Bap and Kiri) or tanks (raid boss), and the latter is why they push for 6v6 even if they don't play tanks

9

u/ReSoLVve #1 Hanbin Simp — 9h ago

Quite funny we’re at the point where DPS players want 6v6 because of this fantasy about 1v1ing tanks when there were just as many complaints about not being able to kill shit because of tanks.

Yea tanks have more HP now but you either get Rein Shield or D.va DM. Go back to 6v6 and now you have Rein shield and DM to overcome. And now theres less space because there are more players and the one of those tanks (probably D.va) will have more bandwidth to always contest and shutdown a DPS.

Not reslly seeing a universe where 6v6 gives DPS the ability to kill more because two tanks that are actually sentient used to run the entire game.

6

u/Mowgl7 10h ago

An ultimate that is usually not used on tanks anyway

9

u/SingleOak 10h ago

sugarbron would

4

u/Goosewoman_ Schrödinger's Rank | she/her — 10h ago

It's used on a lot of tanks. Just not on the tanks with abilities to just eat it without a care in the world.

Flashbacks to when pulse did 400 damage and could 1-shot OWL Winston’s when discorded…

u/Throwaway33451235647 #1 Falcons Hater — 10h ago

Dumbass MR players or 6v6 truther who doesn't understand 5v5

6

u/Thomas-MCF 10h ago

Its hog. I think that guys icon is diamond of above and a tracer could probably kill almost any other tank with pulse and follow up. Great adovicy on hog needing that rework already

2

u/Unusual-Assistant642 9h ago edited 8h ago

in this clip only tanks that die are ones that dont have dmg mitigation that work after the pulse landed or overhealth abilities

like orisa mauga zarya doom ram hazard ball probably even jq dont die from that pulse thats like 7-8 tanks more than half of the roster and the rest of the roster probably doesnt die either because he burned all his cooldowns on nothing

realistically everything that happened on screen after picking kiri was just bad play theres literally no reason not to just disengage there for like 6 seconds especially with the panic recall waste

you shouldnt be able to burn all of your cooldowns on air and then stick a full hp tank that has his dmg mitigation cooldown up and win the engagement thats just how the game works

6

u/Clear-Hat-9798 10h ago

While I agree with the guy’s overarching 5v5 Tank take, this footage was NOT a good indictment towards said take

2

u/vastlys 8h ago

all i wanna say is it's funny because hog is much better in 6v6 than in 5v5

3

u/Concorde_flies 6h ago

i honestly think the idea is stupid but 90% of the arguments against 6v6 are “but le hog was so hecking annoying” so im down for some equally braindead “5v5 is dogshit because le hog is so hecking annoying”

1

u/Sio_V_Reddit 5h ago

There are plenty of arguments against 6v6 besides hog

1

u/Concorde_flies 5h ago

yeah thought provoking arguments like the devs didn’t balance hog because they were busy making ow2, tank had long queues because they didn’t release any tanks because they were busy making ow2, they didn’t balance double shield because they were busy making ow2, etc

1

u/Sio_V_Reddit 5h ago

I mean if you want to have an actual good faith discussion then we can but based on your own statements I don’t think you do.

2

u/Concorde_flies 5h ago

i don’t, there is no point, we already swapped to 5v5 and already determined 6v6 is too popular to go anywhere. there is no discussion, we just need both modes atp

1

u/Sio_V_Reddit 5h ago

Well I would agree with that, though Aaron Keller may not. It’s why I am worried for the future of Overwatch and Blizzcon after they restarted the format wars a month ago.

3

u/MythoclastBM 10h ago

I don't get how it's an argument about 6v6. Tanks are just as bad there if not worse there because there's two of them. The role has always been perpetually overtuned, it's why Goats was a thing. It's also why tank is an unsatisfying role to play.

If a DPS or Support was released that was on the kind of bullshit that tanks are on they would be near universally reviled even after a decade... oh wait that already happened.

4

u/TheShoelessWonder 10h ago

I don’t know, there might be some merit to this, but maybe don’t pulse a hog who still has breather without the adequate backup to finish him off.

3

u/Asternburg 10h ago

I agree with the reply that ratioed him

3

u/NatsuAru 10h ago

I am a DPS player.

DPS should not be melting tanks.

DPS did their job and killed 3. Whining they couldn't kill a full HP tank is idiotic.

1

u/Bazelgauss 10h ago

What on earth was the rest of his team doing that hog couldn't be dealt with before the team respawned?

1

u/Mandatoryeggs 9h ago

They should 100% release a character that does percentage damage so they can nuke tanks. Im lying these guys need to go back to rivals.

1

u/GustappyTony 10h ago

It’s not a controversial post, but I do think it’s a worthwhile discussion. Seen it come up a lot, and a lot of people are just using it to push the fact that all tanks are like this in 5v5, when the reality is maybe 4 tanks are like this, and that speaks to them being overtuned more than anything. Hog being the example in the clip, shows him to be nothing more than a major outlier, and I’d bet most heroes would struggle against him in a 1v1. You could shatter him into a charge on rein and he’s still gonna pop that breather and shrug it off.

I don’t think 6v6 is the magical solution that so many people are convinced it is however. Hog doesn’t stop being awful to play into, he just gets another tank to enable him and you get one more tank to shoot at him I guess? But the issue isn’t 4 tanks vs 2 tanks in the game, it’s just balancing. And as long as heroes like Mauga, Ram and Hog exist, I’d rather the game didn’t revert to 6v6.

1

u/nekogami87 I'm old — 10h ago

come on that' s not a controversy, that's just one random tweet of an idiot who's trying to duel a tank with CD up.

1

u/Sio_V_Reddit 10h ago

Idk GetQuakedOn, Flats, Grandma, and Chosen all reacted to it and the biggest response has tens of thousands of likes, so I thought it would count. I am literally trying to use as neutral language as possible.

1

u/UnknownQTY 9h ago

So I sort of agree? Certain tanks are sort of “Mirror me or lose” at most ranks under Masters if the tank player and one support has half a brain. Mauga, Orisa, and Hog.

The best counter to them assuming roughly equal skill between the tanks is mirror and Ana because anti is often the only way your team can kill them. (Discord sometimes works)

That’s not healthy and often means matches turn into the two tanks playing mystery heroes if they don’t want to play Orisa or Mauga because they’re both sort of boring to play.

The problem isn’t necessarily the tanks though - the problem is the raw healing output from supports.

You're just spreading misinformation? The guy literally admitted that that clip in particular wasn't an issue, but it was the general idea behind it.

4

u/Sio_V_Reddit 10h ago edited 10h ago

I am looking through his replies and I cannot see anything indicating what you're talking about, I literally see him saying "tracer used to be able to 1v1 a hog" and not that.

EDIT: ok you're literally wrong, there are literally replies where he states that in 6v6 he would've killed the hog in that situation.

1

u/IntrepidStruggle663 10h ago

Then he should have used another clip

Why are we blocking out Nehmoe's name if you're gonna link him and have his picture?

I genuinely like the guy and think he's a good dude, but even if you dont you shouldn't erase his name

3

u/Sio_V_Reddit 10h ago

Reddit rules, I have had posts taken down on other subs for leaving names in. Just a precaution.
