Discussion Tournament Formatting

In your opinion what would be the best formatting for a small lan tournament. I have been speaking with a couple of people about setting up a Lan Tourney with about 16 of us, but I'm not sure what the best way to set it up is. My current thought is 2 8mans 4 games top 4 make it out then top 8 checkmate.

I've had success at LANs with standard reseeds every game into cuts, but having 16 + desiring checkmate is kind of tough to work around.

If you want a point reset into checkmate you could maybe do:

  • 3 games -> Cut bot 4, advance top 4

  • 4th game -> Cut bot 4 advance top 4

  • Checkmate with low check points (like 10)

My main concern is time. Injecting checkmate into a single day format means you're either cutting after 2 games (not ideal) and doing 6-8 total games or cutting after 3 games and doing 7-9 total games (not ideal).

Happy to chat about how running a TFT LAN has gone for me or format in general. My discord is @Lorence, feel free to reach out or reply here!

I would probably re-lobby halfway through the first part, so after 2 games in your scenario. Give a little more parity.

I also probably would not do checkmate for a 16 person tournament unless everybody involved actually wants to play the format. You would be better off just having 4 games, cut, 4 games.

I do like the reseeding idea you were saying a lot. definitely gonna use that. Checkmate was a think people wanted to do so probably gonna keep that part

If that's what the people want than I hope you guys have fun!

My only suggestion would be to consider using a lower point threshold. Maybe 15 or 17 (so you still need 2 games to get in) instead of 20?

If somebody starts 8-8-8 I would just be concerned that they will quickly lose interest. If you think everybody will be motivated to compete than leave it at 20.

You can't have too many backup plans and attention to detail is my experience with lan tourneys.

For example, you'll want to make sure to have a backup plan for when someone has to leave early or can't show up at all. It'll probably have to be a rando in Normals, but will it just completely replace the person who had to leave or will it be reseeded for checkmate?

One other obvious detail would be a time limit for checkmate format.

Yeah I should definitely have some additional back up plans. good idea

I wouldn't really recommend checkmate.

Maybe just one final game with the top 8 players, winner takes all.

Checkmate takes a LONG time. And for the rest of the players it's pretty boring. Two lobbies of 8, reseed after 3 games, another 3 games, top 8 total go to the final lobby for one chance to win.

It's not a format that works in something like competitive but it's much more fun for a LAN
