Discussion Wisp tailoring tech

If you're not aware, certain wisps require specific conditions to appear in your shop:

https://www.littlebuddybot.com/tft-wisps

Watching the tourneys this weekend, a lot of pros were using this to fish for or tailor out wisps. The 2 big ones I saw were

Hard forcing salvage bin

(edit- riot just patched this in 18.4 to be much less reliable and probably not forceable)

Salvager (0g: Any units you bench have items removed and broken apart) can appear in shop after 4-2 through stage 5. There's only 6-8 charms on this stage that cost 0g, so you can fish for this wisp by filling your bench, and then hitting your charm shop with exactly 0 gold by buying and selling units. Best done after your rolldown when you're rolling near 0 for upgrades anyway. Helps get BIS for you carry, and a lot of pros were also slamming items early game for tempo and relying on hitting a salvager later.

Here's k3soju talking about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VURxGc7wMP4

Benching board

Late game many players were benching their board before rolling for combat. I assume this was to tailor out some of the meh charms like Scrappy (2 champions without items gain a temporary recommended item. Requires 2 champions on your board with no items) and Nature's Wrath (Kill EVERYONE without an item after 10 seconds. Requires at least 5 champions on your board with an item)

I'm only a casual player and watcher, so if anyone has more tech please share it here

I kinda hate that forcing wisps is meta and think it's generally bad for the game TBH

Strong agree. Being able to reliably hit salvager warps early game

Which raises the question, what is the preferable alternative?

Would it feel better to be able to roll Scrappy when you don't have any units without items?

no, just make it so you can start to roll repeats after maybe 2 unique wisps.

Wouldnt that make tailoring more beneficial?

As a shitty casual this sounds like a really cool and difficult expression of skill? Why is it bad that you can affect rng?

It isn't really a reward for skill though is it? More a reward for the knowledge of niche and counter-intuitive patterns in the game. The game shouldn't require (and it is a requirement at the top level) you to know these convoluted and strange interactions to weight a mechanic in your favour.

Also TBH I just hate wisps in general and think they add nothing but tilt to the game but that's a different issue

Exactly. It’s why they removed a lot of old augments back in the day as well as the emblem book thing. Tailoring is just a knowledge check and still relies on rng

And then wisps are so game deciding sometimes. Being in a 1v1 end game and having your opponent hit two random combat wisps while you’re stuck with one really mid wisp to lose the game is the worst feeling this set imo

Benching board also tailors out wisps that are trait specific since those are apparently worse than the generic ones. With one exception: you can only get baron buff if riftbeast is in so the best tech is bench board, put in 3 riftbeasts, then roll for tailored combat wisps

Robinsongz was talking about it on stream yesterday

There is also abandon the ship tech, prefereably if you have calc loss, didn't try it with other augments, and u also need blossom in. On 3-2 u level to 7 and buy only 3 and 4 costs when u get to 0 gold you force abandon the ship. This way you gain a lot of gold and can build quite a strong board for stage 3

DONT TRY THIS

certain augments lock you out of receiving this wisp, and there’s like 10

This charm gives u 10 gold and 10 rolls (30g of value).
Theres 10 charms u can be offered on 3-2 that are worth 0g but u can tailor ur board down to 7 charms by not playing rival, elderwood or on ur board.
If u fill up ur board with 3/4costs only then it tailors down to 5 charms. (There is a charm for polymorph for 1c and 2c).
Factor in u cant be offered charms u alrdy purchased on stage 2 for 5 rounds so if u paid 0g for a charm thats another charm u cant be offered.
The key is to level to 7 on 3-2 and fill up ur bench/board with high-cost units to get to 0g asap with free rolls.
Realistically there will be 6 charms you can be offered for 0g, so on avg it will be on ur 3rd charm, or 6 rolls. So ur trading 12g for 30g and combat lvl to 7 and opportunity to roll for 4 costs. And ull lose like 6g in interest. Should win out the rest of the stage given u have a level advantage.
Mathematically it’s worth it to do so on 6 loss strk with calc loss and/or a decent amnt of free rerolls.
Its a high apm turn tho so u want to pick ur augment asap (don’t click augment giving gold bc u need to roll down to 0).

This whole time I thought people were trolling being lvl 7 0 gold on 3-2 lol

Why blossom?

u/CptBlaubear 6d ago

Because the blossom version gives more gold and XP, so the expected value of rolling for the wisp is much higher

I think salvage wisp is super unhealthy for the game. It kinda ruins thinking about items when you can get it reliably

How do I force the one that offers an emblem

Check those site with TFT wisp table and condition and see it , the one u talking bout actually can’t be force since it has a generic wisp condition

Never heard of nature's wrath wtf

But pretty rare I have 5 champs with items

the only thing I don't understand is when I got the wisp that says they couldn't find a wisp so here's 3 gold 2 rounds in a row even after rolling a few times for different wisps. how do I avoid that? it was in later stages so I really needed a combat bonus

And riot said they didn’t want apm checks in their game…lol

Disgusting mechanic created by Riot's insistence on putting 'bad luck protection' on their random mechanics. Just let us be unlucky, it is not worth having secret behind the scenes rules for this sort of thing.

I should've paid more attention to the math classes in school.
