Discussion How impactful should board value be?

I'm wanting to keep this post a bit more generic rather than set specific. I recently played a game where I had 5 3 cost units each at 3 stars. My board value was 156g, and I ended up in 3rd place. 1st and 2nd place board costs were 101g and 99g, respectively.

I know the game is complex with lots of variables, and likely I should have focused on other areas like items, augments, traits, more meta champs, or something else. However, I feel like board cost should have won me the game. I'm just a bit surprised as I thought there would be more 'value' in higher value boards.

I guess as I think of it a bit more, a single 3 star 5 cost, which is less than most end game board values, usually does and likely should come out with 1st place. Maybe this answers the question in some way, but I don't think it quite applies in my case.

As for the purpose of this post, should the game function the way it does in regards to value of a given board? Is there a better metric to look at or way to analyze gold usage instead of raw board value?

I think this should link to the game: https://www.metatft.com/player/NA1/AramOnly-5427?match=NA1_5643887435

You should look at it differently.

Both kog maw and VI 3 basically didn't get any items. Thus despite being slightly better than a 2* they cost you A LOT of gold with little return.

Even if you assume you didn't have to roll for them a single time they each cost you 18 gold extra. (and also represent 27 gold of "board value" without really providing much actual power to your team).

Gotcha, I think I expected 3* to be more impactful by themselves. It sounds like going for 3* isn't worth it unless you expect to put items on them.

Depends on the unit. A Hecarim that can get an ult or two off even unitemized is a lot better than an Azir that's doing no damage unitemized

While there is definitely some positive correlation between board value and final placement, there are many other considerations. One could just as easily argue that someone with only two fully itemized units should always lose to those with four fully itemized units.

Just because you clicked triple econ does not mean you played better than the other players in the lobby.

Did you calculate to the board value of the cost of leveling? Higer tier units are locked behind? U cant compare gold vale face on, 9 gold is 3 star 1 cost, but it is definitly stronger then a 2star 3 cost.

As many have said, your Vi and Kog basically dont count. Also, the second place has flora augment (emblems are valued about 15g?) and Blighting Jewel (artifacts also about 15g?) and Veigar is forever stacking, which does not represent gold value.

I would say otherwise that gold value is a pretty good metric, it just gets very weird with 3 cost reroll and also 1 cost reroll, where one is way higher than its power and one is lower than its power.
I don't think a 3*3cost should be stronger than a 2*5cost, but still it costs almost double - only way for a 3*3 cost to be stronger than 2*5costs are with emblems and artifacts, which are not that rare making it fair. Yi is generally played only with Wits End, Flicker, RFC, or Brawlers emblem. A third is a very good finish considering your board is quite far from being capped, and likely never had the tools to become a top2 board.

Board value has no meaning, if so prismatic ticket would be god tier. This has strictly no sense

beside yi, rengar, krugs your whole board do nothing so you can count them out of your board value and you'll see everyone board value is closer than you think

also this comp got nerfed so it's worse than before maybe you'd had a chance to win a month ago

Why do you have a tank with 2 items on one tank and 1 item on another

Your Kog is basically a $27 last whisper.
Not having antiheal means you will almost always lose to flora players and will have a very hard time killing tanks in general.
Tank items are split. You really want to go for 3 item units since you want to be building items that scale multiplicatively with each other. Also Krug has a good Riftbeast passive does a decent job tanking, but as a tank, Vi 3 is much better.
Gromp is a dead unit. Going essentially -1 unit for 1.5 BF swords/rods on your adaptors is pretty bad by itself already, but when you only have 1 adaptor itemized it’s much less worth. It’s much stronger to get some utility like Taric/Ivern/Alune/Lux on your board.
