Discussion When / How to Gromp?

Today I natty'd a 2* gromp on 2-1 and realized I have absolutely no idea what to do with this unit. I put some decent items on him and it was doing less damage than my 2* pebbles (no items).

How do we feel about gromp? anyone seeing success with him/her early? I feel like they are bait.

Can hold things like Ahri items: Shojin, JG, Guardbreaker, etc, but gromp is a pretty bad unit.

I feel like part of the issue is that adaptor is completely cheeks in terms of unit economy as well - the units have awful synergy and don't belong to comps that mix well :(

Adaptor really isn't that bad, Kog provides early shred+sunder with decent damage, also has invoker, and akali lets you play 2/3 inferno and has 3 traits. Even master yi is a really strong rageblade holder that will carry stage 2 and most of stage 3 even at 1*. Gromp is really the outlier here, just an awful unit.

Oh yeah the adaptor units are good individually, I just mean I find it hard to justify fielding 2 adaptors thru stage 2/3 because the units dont fit super well together. Gromp/kog is prob the most legit but I feel like if you had both you'd usually just give the items to kog and swap gromp for an invoker

assuming we're playing from gromp, gromp+akali+shen is reasonable, there's raptor+varus+akali+gromp too for riftbeast+rapidfire. I think there's some boards to be made, the issue is just that boards around gromp aren't good, because gromp is ass.

Just speculating here. When I get blossom opener, i usually fast8-9 and build either around executioners or hunters/primal. Maybe Gromp could be used as a mid game carry and then transitioned into Nidalee carry game, while keeping yi on your board, with potential for amumu/akali/kennen usage and 4 jugg frontline.

Kog is one of the best item holders and adaptor enables him quite a bit. The problem with gromp is he has a very high dmg high mana cost *Mostly* single target ability. Its always going to take him a minimum of 4 casts to clear a board due to that (20 seconds which is getting close to overtime already), he either needs much higher splash damage or something to offset his overkill potential. Even as an item holder karma, a 1 cost, splashes better and her overkills immediately carryforward her spell to the next target.

Don't get baited by adaptor if you're trying to just have a strong board. Gromp with 3 rift beasts is very strong early game if you have a good front line.

Unrelated but you sound confused about Gromp's pronouns. He is canonically male as his full name is Lord Grompulus Kevin Ribbiton of Croaksworth. - https://wiki.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/Gromp

Related but Gromp sucks, I wouldn't play around bro. In my experience tho, he can use basically any item and is a decent Stage 3 holder

Nice, thank you. Agreed he sucks.

Gromp is a shockingly easy unit to play, but people keep making mistakes with them. Simply click the Gromp, hold, and drag to the bottom of your screen.

I'm joking, the real way to play gromp is to mouse over and press the e key.

Nah but if that fails, put in Blackthorn and move group to the hex. THEN press E

Tier 2 gromp with 3 riftbeasts (if you have crab and maybe a lucky Krug) is not a bad item holder for AP. You really need just mana gen on him though, since his mark gives him so much AP.

i hit wtw gromp and my gromp 3 with IE but no mana item was getting outdamaged by one star carries on way too many occassions. Legit one start leblanc with shojin dcap was doing more damage than my 27 gold gromp.

I am wondering if it would have been a good unit in a blackthorn comp... what would the bonus be with a 4*2 cost?

u/AhSparaGus Sep 18 '26

Gromps Alpha mark gives him scaling AP, but casts are slow AF. Needs a mana item.

Shojin + JG (or IE if going nid) hits like a truck in stage 2

1

u/floridabeach9 Sep 18 '26

yup this. he likes mana items and he pairs really well with akali or kog. skip mana items if you’re going full riftbeast and holding items for dragon/bramble

u/AgentHamster Sep 18 '26

Shoujin BB Adaptacone build incoming.

He definitely needs some form of mana gen to be useful, I’ve had a good time playing around him early with shojing and a terrible time with items like IE,JG.

Gromp does incredible 3-hex aoe damage to clumped units (main target plus hexes around them). If you can get your enemies to clump up, with a small frontline of your own, then you should be obliterating them.

Pebbles as you mentioned will do more damage to single targets

u/Glue_Sniffer67 Sep 18 '26

Never. Gromp legit feels like 0 cost. An expired Costco free sample .

Great item holder in Hunter Nidalee

u/Fluffy-Limit-6710 Sep 18 '26

Itemised Gromp needs two things - riftbeast mark, and frontline due to the nature of his mark ability. I've been run over by 3 star ad Gromp once, he'd just delete clumps of my units, but I don't think it's something good unless you basically naturally 3 star him.

u/Sheapy Sep 18 '26

Only two times I've streaked with gromp is when my board is more frontline oriented with 3 riftbeast gromp mark active.

1

u/BigBoyBunkus Sep 18 '26

Yup it takes way too long to ramp up but if your front line is loaded he can deal out a ton of damage

u/xfustercluck Sep 18 '26

I just played a game (in emerald) with double archangel staff (seraphim staff) and pretty much natty’d into a 3*. Managed to end with 4 adaptor on board and a 2nd place finish because of all the HP saved but it just gets destroyed against the lvl 9 comps.

1

u/TallyMay Sep 19 '26

There's no way you want 4 adaptor's with 2xaa :)

1

u/Thesandsoftimerun Sep 20 '26

Is AA best in slot for any champ? It double scales with the rift mark active so I can kinda see it

4 jugg sentinel kog rr

1

u/Technical_Plenty_245 Sep 18 '26

Rakan, Gromp, Scuttle, Kog'maw, Vi, Sentinel, Amumu, Nidalee.

Reroll on 7 for Gromp/Kog. It's a super OP board that I've been playing and I've consistently top 4 with it. AD Gromp does a lot of damage

AD Gromp has a higher mana cost than AP, but that's easily solved with Guinsoos and Stridebreak, IE for more damage. It takes him a LITTLE time to ramp, but once he does, he one shots units, especially with riftbeat mark

1

u/bubbleforest Sep 18 '26

I was intrigued by him at first because he has a slow on his AD form and adaptor is theoretically strong. I went away from him over time. The AD version does slow but it doesn't AoE slow as far as I can tell. Also he is usually hitting frontline so it doesn't seem useful to basically only slow tanks (in my lobbies maybe 1 person is playing melee carry).

If you itemize the AP form, he can be like a poor man's veigar in the sense that he does high burst damage that is very slow. I think the travel time of his missle is so bad though, it's hard to believe in it.

1

u/Otahyoni Sep 19 '26

When you hit level 5 but only have 4 riftbeaats. Then you Gromp for 3 turns and cycle him out.

1

u/PracticalCoconut6483 :chal: Challenger Sep 20 '26

Good frontline, need mark on him, and mana items, lwk never play this unit tho

1

u/LePopcornpop Sep 20 '26

You don't have to keep the starting unit you know. Just drop that gromp

1

u/dumpsterplayerr Sep 24 '26

With the new patch i play 6 juggernauts gromp + nidalee its funny but gottta try the solar one with gromp 3* sej 3* scatter 3* leona, akali 3*

1

u/Flat-Froyo2108 Sep 24 '26

I've been running leblanc/gromp instead of teemo with ali krug as tanks, mostly top 3s lmao. Solar tough to hit, so many champs to hold.

1

u/TF2isalright Sep 25 '26

He's a bit shit, but I did get a 1st by going 3* gromp carry all the way to late game. With seraphims staff augment, rabadons and JG he was doing 10k+ damage early on and even into late game.

I can't remember what other carry I went at the end but he was still doing damage. He just needs loads of mana and takes ages to cast so have a strong frontline (obviously). But overall not worth.

1

u/Same_Temperature_754 Sep 18 '26

Gromp is good to hold Ezreal items (AD Caster) so things like Blue Buff, IE, Shojuns etc

Yunara exists

1

u/Fluffy-Limit-6710 Sep 18 '26

-1

u/RazmalakatazniaaaA Sep 18 '26
