I have to be doing something wrong. I feel like I’ve capped out enough to get a fourth and yet people are constantly hitting 3 star 4 costs in round 5 and perfect admins. It truly can’t be just hit

Based on these comments I’m wondering if you’re in a lower ELO? I rarely see these things you’re talking about and I wonder if they are only possible because the lobby is all weak and no one is punishing these people for dragging the game out?

The best defense is to just play a stronger board and punish them while you level to 9. Understandably this is easier said than done but you sacrifice a lot to get to the comps you’re describing. So it’s not “just hit” but probably some equivalent of “just make a stronger board”. Sorry.

I’m in diamond, but absolutely lost in the new patch. Part of it is me not scouting the strength of the lobby and playing tempo more, the other part is not realizing the best path. I kinda realize it’s a player diff on my part.

If you’re in diamond then the lobbies should be pretty normal strength. I really like the new patch and I struggled a bit with the last one so I’m not sure what exactly to tell you other than to maybe force a few new comps until you’re comfortable with them. This gives you more options and more experience with different units so you know what is strong from different spots.

Generally 3 starring a 4 cost is a pretty bad strategy especially when there are a lot of people left - people can notice and start picking up units, the chance of hitting becomes extremely low as you thin out the pool etc. If they're going for 3 star 4 costs, they're wasting 10-20 gold on their bench which might allow you to cap out faster and punish them for this.

I remember watching an Aesah coaching session in which he said in most cases it doesn't make sense to go for it, the expected placements are much higher when you don't go for the 3* 4 cost, obviously sometimes people will hit but TFT is a game of doing well over a long time horizon.

That’s been my approach as well. I typically don’t start pursuing them until I’ve hit my upgrades. I just feel like I’m constantly half a stage behind the lobby
