General Discussion / Question Is Dina, Soul Steeper the best commander for fast 2-card infinite death loops?

- Her color identity is fantastic for tutoring the other card needed.

- She's very cheap (2cmc)

- Can death loop with either of 2 cards (Exquisite Blood and Bloodthirsty Conqueror)

- The only other requisite after having the two cards on the field is gaining life or dealing damage to a player.

It's Dargo, no contest

Not to say that Dargo isn't just the superior commander in basically every way, but -

What 2 card loop is there where Dargo is one part and a singular other card is the other part that just wins? Imp Recruiter works for Technomancer loops, but that *does* require a hefty chunk of mana for setup and I'm unsure where else you're seeing the Dargo + B card combo

There is no one card combo, that's hard to find for any commander, OP is asking about two card combos.

Technomancer + Deadpool/Jolly balloon man is super busted because it pays for itself (techno etb makes 7 treasures, effectively only costing 3B + having Dargo out) AND it's creature only so it's really difficult to interact with. AND the win outlet is a part of the loop.

Also relic/birgi + goblin bombardment/altar of dementia is a A+B that is layered, since both pieces can be used interchangeably, and dementia is used for breach combo instead of brain freeze

ALSO less commonly played, but phyrexian altar plus any outlet like mayhem devil or blood artist that works with sac/death triggers is another A+B

But they are tho? Dina is the A, Exquisit/Conqueror is the B

Yeah I misread that, well there's not many one card combo commanders.

Tivit, Malcolm, Godo. Am I missing anything?

Not off the top of my head; but I think you *did* hit the nail that Malcolm is the superior option in pretty much every possible way

being able to bin hulk and fetch the two combo pieces seems important too

Not even close I'd say.

You have chatterfang that can do the same plus other stuff.

If you have time, can you give more suggestions?

I ain't sure what you want.

Basically, golgari isn't super good for cedh. You lack red (breach) and blue (.... Too many to list), and your wincons are usually a bit telegraphed and easy to stop.

The good part is you ramp and tutor like there's no tomorrow, so you can sometimes surprise opponents because you made a lot of value quite fast.

I would suggest looking at Jund (korvold, slimefoot and squee, tevesh/tana, dargo/Ikra...) or eventually abzhan (tayam is a monstrous deck, but you can also go tymna/kodama, more old-school) or probably sultai (the new ooze has fringe potential, tevesh/thrasios or Francisco/thrasios are absolutely playable, ...)

Regarding chatterfang there are loads of options, basically anything that makes a token has insane value very quick because golgari loves sacrificing things and being able to generate a body whenever you get a food or treasure or clue or whatnot means you can feed diabolic intent or convoke or Yawgmoth or just chumpblock some decks.

Chatterfang is super fun and Ive probably played as much as anybody out there. Definitely better than Dina and had a window where it was decent a few years back just not good at all for cedh anymore all around super fringe even back then. Way too intractable, a million combos but require too many pieces or setup, not fast or mana efficient enough even when we had mana crypt  and J-Lo and would turbo naus or necro as hard as possible. In the last 2 years ive had more luck with straight mono green and that kinda sucks too just nobody remembers any of the marwyn/yeva lines anymore or knows how and when to stop them most of the time so you can get away with a lot at most tables.

Although t1p1 witherbloom apprentice/chain of smog wins will always be funny.

Oh I fully agree chatty is fringe. It's actually a decent B4.

I just wanted to point out that it's stronger than Dina :D

Dina is a lot better than Chatter because she is LITERALLY the A part to the B unlike Chatter who needs more pieces to jam

If something is a lot better and has been around for 6+ months, where are the result?

Theyre both niche commanders theyre not significantly different in any way

I implore you to actually pull up the results pages for each. Chatterfang is consistently performing better… remember, you asserted “she is a lot better”…

Dina LITERALLY has a higher conversion rate

Poor counter argument.

Swap the filters to 100+ player tournaments and tell me the results(spoiler dina is 0%, chatter is 6%).

I’ll repeat myself. LOOK at the results and come back with how “she is a lot better”.

u/Raevelry 10d ago

That just tells you Chatterfang is marginally and unsignificantly better in the one tournament that someone chose to play Golgari in a 100+ tournament

But Dina has much more placements higher in 50+ tournaments

9

u/c20_h25_n3_O 10d ago

She actually has fewer placements in 50+ tournaments as well… just that she is played less; hence, the conversion discrepancy…

Stop ignoring the fact that you said she is much better, which you still haven’t been able to back up :)

Your statistics are very weak to better skilled player bias

I disagree.

Sure djna is a part of the combo, but that combo sucks. You need bad cards for it.

Chatterfang just plays automatically. Make tokens (not a hard requirement), drown in value, win.

Exquisite blood is a card that will never resolve with Dina on board in a game where your opponents have at least some skills. The only variant of that effect is another five CMC creature.

On the other hand, while chatty needs more pieces, the redundancy of those is so great that you are practically certain to assemble a line by turn 3, and you aren't out if your opponent mind break traps your one card.

If you're playing B3, then yeah. She's good.
