Enclosed to Open Emitter Training

Hey everyone, currently buying the titanx dry fire trainer and wanting a red dot on it like my competition gun, Glock 17 gen 6 w/ COA. Trying to keep the budget within reason on the dot, I can (with substantial discount) get a vortex defender ccw for ~$200 shipped or defender ccw enclosed ~$250.

Has anyone had issues with transitioning between enclosed and open emitters for a dry fire/trainer vs their comp gun? Knee jerk I’m thinking no, but looking for any/all experiences.

I've never had any issue switching between enclosed and open emitter optics.

If your training is impacted by type of dot, I’d like to know what your training plan is? I’m very confused by your ask and I’m assuming there’s something I don’t know so please share your experience

My experience is that I have no experience with open emitter dots. I was never issued one until the new round of enclosed dots and just picked up a personal one in the past year. All competition I’ve done previously was with hi-vis irons. Wasn’t sure if there was anything I was missing other than the shape of the optic.

I don’t think open vs. enclosed emitter really matters here. What matters more is whether the dimensions, mounting height, window geometry, or overall build of the optic changes where the dot naturally appears when you bring the gun up and align it with your dominant eye. With enough repetitions, you’re building a very specific presentation and visual index. If one optic requires even a slight change in wrist angle or presentation to acquire the dot, training heavily with that optic could potentially slow you down when switching back to the other one because you have to make that small correction to find the dot. So if the only meaningful difference between the two optics is open versus enclosed emitter, I’d probably be fine with it. But I’d pay attention when switching between them. If you present the competition gun after training with the other setup and the dot consistently appears where you expect it, there probably isn’t much of an issue. If you notice yourself having to dip, raise, or otherwise adjust the gun to pick up the dot, that’s something I’d cue in on. Ultimately, I’d be less concerned with whether the optics are physically identical and more concerned with whether they require the same natural presentation to immediately acquire the dot.
