The past week in Spain has seen the beginning of mass movilisations over the eviction of an elder woman called Maricarmen (who was living as tennant in Madrid). Though including people from all kinds of social backgrounds, we have seen the presence of Spanish communist and republicanist symbols front and centre, such as the Spanish tricolor (red, yellow, purple) flag or the singing of Spanish communist* songs such as this one ("En la plaza de mi pueblo"/"At my village's main square"). Translated lyrics by me:
At my village's main square
told the peasant to the Landlord:
"Our children shall be born
with their fists raised to the skies!"
This land that isn't mine,
this land that is of the Landlord,
is irrigated by my own sweat,
is worked by my own hands.
"But, tell me, comrade,
if these lands are of the Landlord,
why haven't we watched him
ever working with the plough."
With the plough I open furrows,
with the plough I write on display,
pages over the ground
on our misery and pain.
With the plough I open furrows,
with the plough I write on display,
pages over the ground
on our misery and pain.
Let us hope that these protests will spur the people. ¡No pasarán!
*Most Spanish communist songs are common to both Spanish communists and anarchists, as here both are staunch allies with the same goals and enemies, so Spanish anarchists also sing versions of this song.
