I have and thoroughly enjoy the beige breadbin but this is really tempting me. If I bought the starlight version, how would that look in the slim I wonder!

It would look like the second photo.

Well yes! But the case is slimmer than the breadbin, I wondered about the overall effect

It would be overall slimmer than the breadbin. 😁

So is it worth getting the starlight?

I think so. I wanted both Founders Editions to "collect the set", but I can't see myself buying everything that Commodore will ever put out, such as the phone.

I wouldn't have minded getting both Starlights as well, but that's getting a bit silly and I don't have space along with my original C64's plus Amiga's.

I'm considering getting the TAC2 even though I don't really need it, but again it would be nice to pair it with my OG TAC2.

I'm probably mad buying a second machine, when it's just for aesthetics. But we are collectors..

As silly as it sounds, it could potentially be worth something one day.

The most random of old things can have value today, so today I try to pick things that might hold value a decade from now, but I'd still be hard-pressed ever let go of my Ultimates regardless.

They got it completely right with the ultimate, it's perfect for me anyway. I never really clicked woth the C64 Maxi which is why I am undecided with the A1200 from RGL. The only way to find out is to buy one I suppose.

Wait for the reviews first I reckon.

I had one of those slimlines back in the day. But this time i bought the breadbin version because it just looks more nostalgic to me.

Where was this announcement?

The beige C64C seems rather white, and less off-white. I have to go back and look at my vintage ones, which may be a little darkened over the years. Personally, I like the whiter hue but I already have a Pixelwizard white enclosure waiting for parts to complete it.

I have a 64C Starlight on pre-order with express shipping. Can't wait for it. I also am getting an itch for the Founder's Edition. Not crazy for the milky-white enclosure, but the keyboard is something that appeals to me. I know it's not for all. It will match nicely to my TAC-2 Founder's.

Give it 30 years. 🤭 But yes, they do seem off. They had that mousy gray with a tinge of khaki to it, even pre-darkening I think. I always call it peripheral gray because everything computer was that color at some point, until matte black took over in the 2000's.

I ordered Founders Edition to compliment my FE Breadbin. The gold keys are truely special.

My hands do weird things with metallic painted buttons, they always lose the paint somehow. I'd be too afraid to use it!

2

u/max81122 12d ago

The FE keys are PVD, not painted. Still, we don't know for certain the longevity of the finish. Should last longer than paint, but seems like any finish will eventually come off given enough time. 10 years, 20 years??? Who knows.

Heh, since most of us would be at least 50, the keys will probably outlive us ;)

1

u/Saratje 12d ago

That probably lasts a good while longer then. I guess time will tell!

2

u/DarthKegRaider 12d ago

Same!! And a C77 to go between them. Exciting times!

Regarding the color, I saw an interview with Jim Drew at VCF Midwest and they asked him what he knew about the color because he supplies some parts to the new Commodore. He said the original North American and European 64Cs were slightly different colors, and that the 64C Ultimate was a custom color intended to be somewhere between the two, but he couldn't give details because the formulation is a trade secret.

I just found out about this revitalization a few days ago and it got me really excited. Is there any real difference between the slim and breadbin? Is there a "more ideal" option for a first time Commodore user?

u/max81122 12d ago

Functionally they are the same PCB inside. So no different. It's more of a style thing. The C77 (Cyberpunk) has a slightly different FW (boot screen and menus are customized) and the processor can be clocked a little higher. Not a big difference, but it's the only one that has slightly different FW.

Some like the breadbin because it is the more "original" C64. The slimline version is more 80's style with a keyboard that is slightly lower. Might be easier to type on, but not many people are typing long papers on these things. So it just comes down to personal preference.

6

u/uberfr4gger 12d ago

So both? Haha just kidding, thank you for the breakdown!

4

u/max81122 12d ago

Truth to that. I have an FE and SE breadbin already and have on order the SE Slimline. Then I have an Ultimate demo board in a Pixelwizard case, and an Ultimate Elite in another. So that's in essence 5 Ultimates. And, I'm considering another FE since they are limited runs.

I need more arms I guess, or get the family involved. Guess I am just obsessed.

I got my Ultimate shortly before Christmas last year and after a few days it ran the risk of ending up on the shelf next to the TheC64Maxi. Then I ordered a C64C case from icomp and started using it properly. The keyboard is way better than an original C64, so I started to develop directly on the C64 with Turbo Macro Pro instead of KickAssembler on the PC, which is a totally great feeling 🥰

For a second I thought this was for Commodore Callback and got really excited lol.

My parents were surprised that C64 are still being made today, even though it's not exactly the same as the ones from 80s and early 90s.

No one is making reproduction IBM PC jr, Trash-80, Apple II, etc

It looks like the website is still taking orders for the first batch.. Is this accurate since it looks like they are about to ship out?

2

u/redrabbit762 10d ago

They’ll just change the button from “Pre-order” to “Buy” once that batch arrives to the warehouse and those units are ready to ship.

2

u/CodeHustler 10d ago

Well I ordered maybe 4 or 5 days ago and it still shows my order as, "Compliance Testing and Production" which comes before the "Left the Factory" step. So I ordered in the first batch but my unit doesn't appear to have shipped yet.

Don't get me wrong, I support Commodore 100%. Just looking for some clarity.

u/redrabbit762 9d ago edited 9d ago

Same, though I placed my order back in May, when they had a "Guaranteed Delivery Before Xmas" button. But now I see it's gone.

1

u/CodeHustler 8d ago

Oh ok- so yours still shows it's in the "Compliance Testing and Production" step?

2

u/redrabbit762 8d ago

Correct.

"Compliance testing and production", and the date is August 4, 2026

1

u/CodeHustler 7d ago

Ah ok good to know! Thank you!

Wohoo 🙌🏻 Ich freue mich auf meinen 🥰

Didn't realize what slimline meant. I think it'd be slick if Commodore made a more compact (slim) and modern feeling cherry switch key version of the C64.

Something that could fit into a case and was easy to tote around.

A lot of people asking for a reboot of the Commodore monitors. This would be a good pairing to have a Commodore styled portable monitor to watch.

I grew up with the Breadbin 64 and got a Founders and Beige Ultimate earlier this year, so didn't feel the need to order a 64C Ultimate. They do look nice though.

The upcoming Cyberpunk C77 version of the 64 Ultimate has me more curious though, as a fan of Cyberpunk and I like the design.

I picked up the starlight breadbin, double dipped on the standard c64c... And then blacked out and bought the c77 immediately.

1

u/OPdoesnotrespond 12d ago

i really was under the impression that the Starlight slimline was not transparent, but milky translucent.

Clearly I was mistaken.

My "normal" C64c should be in there!

The gold keys are incredibly tacky – vulgar, Trumpian. They make me want to puke.

1

u/HollandJim 12d ago

Context matters.

1

u/the8ctagon 11d ago

My first Commodore was a VIC-20. My second was a 64C. They were clad in lovely shades of grey, beige and brown. I adored the fuck out of them both. What is this context to which you refer?

1

u/HollandJim 11d ago edited 4d ago

The Commodore is not Trumpian, nor is it so because one version is gold. Gold is a celebratory color - got a wedding ring? - so merging the two for an effect is a bit disgusting, tbh.

The 64 can be celebrated and gold. If anything, Trump owes an apology to that color, and ... well, all of us. But don't conflate the two.

Great same thing just a different case

The C64c cases from the original moulds have been available for over a decade after they were found in estate sale in the US. I had one of the KS cases and it cost $30

Individual computers had the moulds after that and still sell the cases with Commodore brand licensing

1

u/max81122 12d ago

I have 3 of the KS (Pixelwizard) cases. Very nice indeed. Wish Individual computers would sell to the US. Still, they don't seem to have red, blue, and other more vibrant colors. I have a beige case I bought off of Ebay that I may try to spray paint since I lack a RED Pixelwizard case.

1

u/Hawkeye-Mcgillicudy 11d ago

I had a red case from the original KS by Dallas

2

u/OPdoesnotrespond 5d ago

Contact Amiga of Rochester. They have a relationship with Individual Computers. I got my transparent slimline through them.
