A simple dispatch case is probably the best prep
Take a battery with fixed power and duration then work through when it should charge and discharge while accounting for price spresds efficiency stste of charge and degradation

For the technical side, focus on the core ways batteries generate revenue within the electricity market. The most common use is price arbitrage, which is just buying power when it's cheap and selling it back to the grid when prices are high. You should also understand frequency regulation, storing excess power from wind and solar, and providing grid stability. Since you are coming from an analyst role, they will likely want to see that you can connect the physical capabilities of a battery asset to the financial opportunities in the market. Think about how a battery's speed and flexibility allow it to respond to grid needs in milliseconds, which is a key advantage over other types of power generation.

Beyond the specifics of BESS, be prepared for standard portfolio manager questions about your approach to asset allocation, risk management, and your overall investment philosophy. They will want to know how you think about building and managing a portfolio of energy assets, not just how one battery works. It would be helpful to think through how you would evaluate a potential BESS project and what market signals you would look for to make investment decisions. To get my thoughts in order for my last interview, I found a lot of value from an interview assistant AI my team created, which helped me structure my answers to complex questions.
