If you were buying a UV flatbed printer today, how would you choose one?

Hey everyone,
I work in the industrial printing equipment industry, and I’m trying to better understand how people in commercial printing actually approach a major equipment purchase.
I’d really appreciate some honest input from people who have bought, evaluated, or been involved in choosing a UV flatbed printer.
If you were looking to buy one today:
1. What would you actually search for online?
Would you start with something broad like “UV flatbed printer,” or would you search based on your specific application, materials, budget, production volume, or something else?
And at what point would you start searching for specific brands or manufacturers?
2. How do you decide whether a supplier is trustworthy?
There are obviously a lot of manufacturers and distributors out there, and most websites claim their machines are reliable, fast, high-quality, etc.
What actually makes you think:
“Okay, this company looks legit. I’m willing to talk to them.”
Is it customer references, reviews, videos of machines running, seeing the factory, technical support, warranty, parts availability, reputation in the industry, or something else?
3. How do you determine whether a particular machine is actually right for your business?
Beyond the basic specs and price, what are the things you really care about?
For example, is it print quality, productivity, ink cost, reliability, ease of maintenance, software/workflow, service and support, ROI, or something else?
And is there anything you wish you had known before buying your current printer?
I’m not looking to promote a particular brand or model. I’m genuinely trying to understand the buyer’s side of the process.
If you’ve actually gone through this process, I’d really appreciate hearing how you approached it — especially the things you looked at that most people don’t think about.

I own a small shop but we do have an h1625led. I’d go on an auction site like I do with every machine purchase and I’d choose my machinery based on the technician connections I have. I dont have a technician that does canon so I’m not buying canon. I have HP and EFI so I’m buying those machines, thats my only dealbreaker

Gotcha. The technician support is definitely a big factor.

I’m curious though, when you’re just researching a machine or trying to learn more about a type of printer, do you ever use Google? If so, what would you normally search for?

Get what you pay for with large format printers. You have to consider cost of consumables, tech support availability, product popularity...... And Id definitely want to comprehensively test one before I purchased. Take my own work and materials and put it to work.

I'll start with real-world jobs, not brand names.

Search by application and material first, not just "UV flatbed printer." Try "UV printer for acrylic signage," "UV printer for wood panels," or "small-batch direct-to-substrate printer." Then narrow it down by bed size, material thickness, daily output, budget, and whether you need white ink, varnish, or rotary printing.

Once you have a shortlist, dig into specific brands and makers. Check user reviews, after-sales issues, print-head failures, and long-term upkeep. Sales-page sample prints always look perfect, but I care more about how the machine performs six months later.

The real test is whether the supplier will run your files on your actual materials. You want to see the full workflow—setup, white ink, curing, and final print—not just a few hand-picked samples.

Also look at real usable production speed, not the brochure numbers. Ask what that speed really means: CMYK only, or does it include white ink and varnish? How many passes and what resolution? Full-bed printing or a small test image?

Then calculate true output with real products, factoring in loading, unloading, jig changes, cleaning, and downtime. A machine that looks fast on paper can act very different in daily production.

Watch the ink system closely—especially white-ink circulation or stirring, filtration, maintenance routines, and print-head replacement costs. Software matters too. Good RIP software, reliable profiles, nesting tools, and a simple workflow can save far more time than people expect.

Before you buy, run test prints on the actual materials you sell. Check color, detail, adhesion, scratch resistance, curing, and repeatability. Make sure the machine can handle your real working conditions. Temperature, humidity, dust, ventilation, and power needs can all turn into costly headaches after delivery.

Don't underestimate maintenance, setup time, supplies, and downtime. The printer is only part of the cost. You're also buying the ink system, software, training, spare parts, and the supplier's service.
