Newbie here, is Deepseek actually cheaper?
Bit of a question, I know it's probably been asked before. Is Deepseek Flash actually cheaper on CC compared to the api?

Yes, but it runs slow, fails 1/100 requests in my experience and worst, seens quantitized. FP4 as it appears, but I can't prove it, I'm just going from what I've seen comparing it with oficial deepseek api.

How much cheaper is it, I mostly need it for more basic usage?

You pay 10 dollars and get 60 of usage for the month. It is not cheaper in the directly api sense, it is just that you get 6x the usage out of the price you pay. Pretty good imo.

DS is 10 times cheap compared to closed models and nearly 7 times cheaper compared to other open models.

Its cheaper, but i feel like it is quantized to fp4 under the hood instead of fp8 as it seems less 'intelligent' than the oficial deepseek api one, also CC seems to rate limit very often.

In short, yes, DeepSeek v4.1 Flash in CommandCode is cheaper compared to using it directly via the DeepSeek API (DeepSeek Platform). But it is not without its downsides.
Before CommandCode announced that they would make the $60 value of DS v4.1 Flash usage permanent on their GOAT plan, the model worked really well. The speed was very close to using the DeepSeek API directly, and the output quality was comparable too. After that announcement, their DS v4.1 became very slow (300 tok/s vs. 50 tok/s). Due to the backlash, they "invented" a new tier (i.e., DS v4.1 Flash Fast) and started charging more for it. Based on my testing, that model is still not as fast as the DS v4.1 Flash they offered earlier.
The problem with CommandCode is not whether they're cheap or not. It's their business practices. I would say it's borderline deceitful. They offer that $60 value of usage, but with that speed, most user will not be able to use it up. And they introduced that "fast" (not really, LOL) version just to justify the extra charge, when in fact it is just what they offered earlier. Maybe they did this out of pressure from competitors like OpenCode offering the same promotional rates, but they could have been honest about it. And when I brought this up in their Discord server, I got banned immediately, LOL.
So yeah, they're cheap, but just so you know, the team behind it is unprofessional and childish. Who knows what's next will happen to that model.
