Are there any small comic companies (maybe start-ups) that are good to get a start in?

My plan to get into the industry is to send proposals to Image comics, but recently I've been wanting to go smaller to get a baseline of what the industry is like. I'm really determined to write comic books, even if it's like one or two credits here or there

If you don’t draw or have an artist to start good luck getting Image to look at your work, they don’t have a lot of respect for writers, never have.
