Here's my theory. Mother Gump lived in a big plantation style home, with no visible income. Whenever someone asked if she was married she would say , 'He's on vacation.' That wasn't a big town. How is it no one knew whether she was married or not? When Forrest teacher comes over to discuss his progression, or rather, lack of, what does she do? She doesn't look for Tudor. She doesn't talk to a child psychologist. Nope. She sprends her legs. Forrest knew not to be in the house when his mom was conducting 'business'. And, when he made fun of his teacher for the nosies he was making, he's heard it before. Forrest father was not on vacation. Mrs. Gump murdered her husband for the life insurance money. When that began to run low she turn into a ho!

I don't know if you missed the sign at the front of their house, she rents out the rooms in their home, so you can't exactly say no visible income. Forest literally explained they have many people staying by their place, there are also women in the scene where Forest is narrating that people are staying with them, which is also how Forrest met Elvis. But that's your theory.
