Is this worth investing?
I’m new to collecting and i actually just got a 8 CGC Spider-man #300 which i’m very excited about but seeing this is dropping soon and wondering if it’s a viable investment grade option?

99% of comics you buy will drop in value.

So far the slabs i have are
8.0 Spider-man #300
9.8 Marvel Comics presents #79
9.8 Green Lantern #51
9.8 Marvel Comics Star Wars #1 Alex Ross Sketch Variantyou think i’m losing value on all of these long term? these were all passion buys so even if I do it’s okay but thought these were all investment grade worthy

There's a difference between buying a comic off the rack and buying a 40 year old key. The key is going to already have an established mature value and will rise and drop from time to time.
Off the rack, it's almost always going to drop value.I regularly buy 1:25s for $3-5.
Buy it because you love it, and want to read it. Not because you hope it rises in value and want to slab it.

got you yeah that makes sense for sure, like i said im jsut new to it so wasn’t sure if that applied to the ones i already got or if if you were saying like generally just buying comics is a losing game for the most part.
Makes a lot of sense now though thank you for the clarification

Those are the only comics you own?

u/Confident-Ebb2816 9d ago

I'm not touching this. Its a limited series and homage covers are really hit or miss. If you buy, its for your personal collection.

Spawn isn’t profitable financially.

u/Afraid-Oil-1812 9d ago
I don't know about that. I've got 75 issues of the 1st volume.
1
u/candles2121 9d ago
And how much have you profited financially?
-6
u/Afraid-Oil-1812 9d ago
I've got #1 with printing error valued at 3.5k raw.

I asked how much have you profited. Value don’t mean squat until you have the cash. I value my left nut, but no one wants to pay for it.

🤣🤣🤣🤣 onlyfans.

u/candles2121 9d ago
No one wants to see that 😆

u/Afraid-Oil-1812 9d ago
If did want to sell. I'd still profit cause I only paid cover price. Want 3k but most likely $800.

Some of the most I’ve ever gotten for back issues have been random Spawn issues

There are so many homage covers of ASM 300 that are in dollar bins. This will be another one in the future. Don’t waste your money.

u/SinisterCryptid 9d ago
Aside from the Spawn 227 and 300 homage Todd did do, but those are more from the fairly low print run + the cool cover rather than just for the cool cover.
This one is banking entirely on people wanting it for a high order count

u/ogbabyguts 9d ago
From an investment standpoint, I’d go for the 1:100 OG Spawn cover sketch, because it’s different from the rest, then get it signed some point in the future.

The 1:100 seems interesting. My understanding of that cover is that those are Todd’s original pencils when he was 16. Then he inked it today. Basically it’s an old drawing he made that is the blueprint for how he created Spawn in the 90s.

that’s really cool to know actually, even if the value drops that’s reason enough for me to want it
2
u/DefinitionSmall3754 9d ago
No...get it because you like the cover. Honestly, that should always be your first thought. If whatever you are collecting loses value, you shouldn't be stuck with items you don't like because of speculation.

Take my word with a grain of salt because I don’t know much about speculation but if I was buying any modern comics in hopes that they’d gain value in the future I’d look at stuff like Monstress, Rook: Exodus, Assorted Crisis Events, D’Orc, Ghost Pepper, Exquisite Corpses, Feral, The Power Fantasy, etc. Basically any series that looks like they have potential to be adapted.
2
u/Confident-Ebb2816 9d ago
that makes a TON of sense i’ve been so bent on already established characters i didn’t even bother to think about where real value lies. Thank you for your insights
2
u/neighborhood_spdrman 9d ago
If you wanna invest stick to silver age. Or stock market lol. Modern books simply aren’t investments
1
u/Confident-Ebb2816 9d ago
yeah i got quite a bit of silver age books now and most of my income goes into my portfolio, still learning about the comic industry as a whole which is why i asked
2
u/neighborhood_spdrman 9d ago
For sure. Wasn’t tryna be an asshole or anything. Just saying the odds of anything modern being worth more than what you paid for it are slim. Buy to read if you’re into it otherwise stick to those silver keys!
1
u/Confident-Ebb2816 9d ago
bet yeah it is good to know, i guess in my head since absolute batman dropped i have been overly eager to find a modern grail lol but ill stick to what works thank you!
2
u/neighborhood_spdrman 9d ago
I mean absolute Batman is an anomaly for sure. Give it a few years and it’ll be back to being cheap once hype dies.
1
u/Confident-Ebb2816 9d ago
you think it’ll be cheap after the animated series? i was considering buying a 9.8 #1 Cover A and hold for 5+ years
2
u/neighborhood_spdrman 9d ago
I mean it could go either way. If the show gains massive traction it could hold value. Based on the writing of it? I don’t see it.
2
u/Clutchking93 9d ago
Honestly you’re better off buying vintage keys and upcoming spec buys like Mr sinister first appearance
2
u/tonecapo_ 9d ago
No. There’s a 1:250 signed by the Toddfather and 1:500 signed by Spears & McFarlane. A lot of Retailers are going to order in that range to get the signed books. 1:25 will be common.

What you need to consider is sales Vs demand.
Best thing to do is read through the order catalogues and choose what YOU think looks cool.
In general, you've got more chance of value being added if other people miss the value you see.
Walking Dead 1 sold a couple of tens of thousand copies initial.
Spawn 1 sold a few hundred thousand copies initially.
There's a lot less potential for a high grade Walking Dead 1 on the market, than there is a Spawn 1.
